As 2010 summer was coming to an end, I finally decided to use as much time as I needed to finish my wallpaper that I started back in May. Main reason was because I wanted to start the fall semester with one less thing to worry about. :D
The scene this wallpaper illustrates is from a popular anime show One Piece where the main character Monkey D. Luffy for the first time unleashes his second gear (hence the name of the wall) to fight a tough enemy at the top of the Enies Lobby. It was an epic moment that I am sure many of those that watch One Piece remember.
This wallpaper was the first one that I painted entirely without using any vectors. It was a completely different experience from the walls I did before and it was a good opportunity for me to try out some of the Paint Tool SAI brushes and features.
I ended up restarting working on it half way through because it was turning out pretty awful the first time. T.T But second time around it turned out much better and I’m happy with the results.
I’d say it was done around 20% in Photoshop and 80% in Sai, using the smudge and soft round brush in PS and all of the basic brushed in Sai. Most of the image was painted on one layer because I didn’t want to make a whole bunch of layers for every few strokes. I figured it would be faster and much more organized that way. But it made it a heck of a lot more difficult to fix mistakes. Which reminds me, Sai saves a heck of a lot more brush strokes that can be ctrl z’d than PS, which I think is a big plus when painting.
1920x1080 (16:9) is the main resolution that contains the whole image, the rest of the 16:10 and 4:3 are cropped. In the end, PSD was 106mb.

Oh and I forgot to mention its my first male wall. Some pointed out that I only did female characters so that is no longer true. XD Hope you guys enjoy this wall!

This is really smooth and clean! You extended the scan very nicely. Making this as a widescreen would be great too! But I wish you changed the hue of the skin tone of Luffy here even though that's the original color from the scan. He's kinda, well, PINK. LOL. (XD)

Oh yes, this scene. 8D Truly a great moment. Nice painting! I bet it was quite the learning experience. :3 The steam turned out nicely. :D If I were to note anything major, the colors seem a little flat and his skin not as shiny as it could be - the pink looks more like a regular skin tone rather than the shiny Gear 2 kind. For this I would take advantage of ps's blending modes to get it just right. It's nice to see more One Piece walls!

i REALLY think this peice would be so much more powerful if you applied more contrasted curves to your center piece and lightened the sky ever so slightly. his skin also needs some more yellowish tones, right now its too flat + pink, esp around the highlights/where his muscles are defined.
but aside from those issues, i love your simplified brushstrokes and the way you've warped the background due to "heat wave" or whatever its called (conduction? possibly? lol idk). i also want to point out to anyone else drawing buildings to follow your example and roughen up the lines a bit, it will still look neat but will seem more like it fits.
good job with the recg, would like to see you tackle something more challenging with the things you've learned from this wall

Great wall aki! You choose an epic scene for a wall from One Piece. Although it's probably harder than I'll comprehend, it'd be nicer if the colors were more vivid. I do however like the fact you have many wide-screen resolutions available, even for my monitor XD.

Wow man, just wow! I have been looking for a 2nd gear Luffy wall for a long time, and this beats every single one of them! In my opinion, and it's just something I don't like, but the smudge isn't working out for me. It's still the best thing I ever seen I seen though, don't get me wrong! +FAV!
