v3
Out with the same old series, in with the new ones…
Concept:
In someway or another, I’m sure almost everyone has already seen something similar before (drawings and scribbles on a piece of paper with stuff laying on top). This isn’t something new, but I’ve always wanted to try it; just for the fun of it.
The general idea was to showcase a sequence (frame by frame) of a character’s animation in a somewhat interesting (and perhaps fun) way. The whole thing was composed around 3 consecutive drawings of Madoka (from fully colored-shaded to sketchy) on a piece of folded paper.
Note: At first, I was planning on using Haruna from Kore wa Zombie Desu ka for this, but since I couldn’t find a sequence of images of her that I really liked, I ended up discarding her and using Madoka instead. Using Ayumu (magical girl mode) was out of the question.
More stuff:
The series of Madokas were vectored in Ai from screenshots that I took from the opening; from the moment Madoka starts crazy-running at the very end of it (best part of the opening, period). Madoka might look somewhat different from her usual, but that’s hers. It's just a different style of drawing, that’s all (Shaft’s greatness; breaking away from the norm, perhaps).
In a nutshell:
- Added more shades to colored-Madoka. Differences between screenshot and vector should be noticeable at least to some degree (refer to chart below).
- In the original, Madoka’s overall color scheme was somewhat “muddy” (original setting: rainy-cloudy). I didn’t want her to look like that, so I “brighten her up” (new setting: sunny).
- Art/work supplies on top. They are simple 3D objects (low poly) done quickly in Maya, and then brought into Photoshop for final composition and adjustments. It’s pretty standard-basic 3D and, frankly, really simple stuff (less than an hour to finish all objects before Ps composition). They’re not perfect, but fair enough, at least for this. Rendered in passes.
- More of the usual: textures, more adjustments, etc
Note: I didn’t smooth the pencil because I preferred it this way (kinda rough-looking).
Basic Chart (Screenshots, etc)
The End:
The hero/heroine of any series should always be walled (if walling...), no matter how wimpy, whinny, annoying or incompetent he/she might be. Thus Madoka needs a wallpaper.
Non-sense aside,
I really like it when animation studios push themselves to make stuff based on their own concepts-ideas from complete scratch (not based on a pre-existent manga, novel or game) such as this series (as well many others; e.g.: Occult Academy, Star Driver, Texhnolyze, Gurren Lagann, etc). I did this for the sake of absolute fun and, in some way, I also did it as a form of appreciation-support to these series and the studios that make them.
Versions: (Nothing big… just small arrangements)
- Version 3 (original, my preferred version) = With eraser (Pink Pearl by Papermate: the one and only brand used by wannabe magical girls like Madoka), adhesive tape and Japanese SFX (out of breath, run).
- Version 2 = With eraser. Without adhesive tape and Japanese SFX.
- Version 1 = Without eraser (less magical pinkness, but still pink enough), adhesive tape and Japanese SFX.
Anyhow, all comments are welcome and thanked. Enjoy.

Edits: Heh… didn’t see that typo on the eraser. Fixed. Thanks for the heads up guys. The change might not show immediately in the preview or download, though... but it's a done deal (for both, ver. 2 and ver. 3).

Maylasia or Malaysia? I wonder.... ;P
I like the concept, specially the paper and rubber pattern. The hand lines are to thick and the little drawings in the yellow piece of paper dont merge with it.
Good concept.

Awesome work, I like your concept! Nice quality, neat and clean. Great combination of 3d parts with plain ones.
and YAY for MOAR Madoka walls!
and I prefer 3rd version, thought 1,2 are awesome too.

Personally I would've liked a different picture of Madoka. The lines on her hair don't taper enough, especially compared to the lines of her face. The folded paper texture doesn't show on the colored image (makes it look less blended), and I also noticed the misspelling. The rendered images look awesome though (the details on the pencil and eraser are cool)

Interesting idea, I really love the way you made the sketches come to life. The pink eraser is a great addition since it fits the girl so well <3

Your concept is really, really nice. :D
ALTHOUGH:
The coloring process is the other way around, don't you think? Because based from your progress picture, the sketchy version of Madoka is LAST frame whereas the colored version is FIRST frame----SO don't you think the colors should be the other way around?
Anyway, other than that, the colors are really great and the textures used for it are blending well too. <3

Good work. It's good to see more Madoka walls on here. It's an awesome show afterall. I'm gonna eventually make a Madoka wallpaper from that vector I made of Madoka and Homura shooting the bow.
Madoka looks really cute and bright, so good job.

My favorite was version 1-I just didn't like the eraser. Personal preference. I'm glad you gave us different choices. A great job overall.

**good concept, the only thing is that you are going for a drawn style, and this screams vector more then anything. Still it's nice to see some Madoka Walls popping up now.

Madoka is a pretty epic, that's for sure ;D I really like the overall composition and the subtle color overlays, although I wonder what the wall would look like if you added some extra text over the pencil sketch of Madoka. Still a really nice wall overall though, well done!

So much work done here and so detailed description!!! Nice vectoring, sketching etc.... but some of the lines are disconnected. Did you do that on purpose? It was a nice idea, and a nice way to 'hid' your credits. I like the third version....

A very nice, "out of the box" piece. The work put into the sketching turns out well, combining with all the little supplies (particularly the Pink Pearl eraser :P ) to really bring out the feeling of the viewer seeing a work in progress. Keep up the good work!

This was definitely a great series. All mahou shoujos should be like this (dark and psychological), for real.
Anyhow, I really love the concept and neatness of this. This is so different from the series overall look, but that’s what makes it so cool at the same time.

The overall concept and quality of this wall is awesome. Sure… technique is important, but in the end it’s all about the concept and how interesting and good that concept is.
Love the series, love your wall.

Love the overall idea of mixing 3D with 2D. I think you did a neat job making them work together without looking odd or out of place. And I gotta say that the concept itself is definitely something to be praised at. It’s not just fun, but unique in style. Such a great series needs more unique wallpapers like this. Definitely one of the best one in here so far.

This wall is unique. Killer concept. Different from anything Madoka I've seen in this site so far. Love it. It's f****** amazing.
Everything else I see here Madoka related its just too moody for my tastes.
