Love your third revision, even it's a happy moment between two innocent (temporary) brothers, but these cold dark colors reflect the sadness and all the tears behind these smiles, I really love it!
Also, your techniques are correct, I found the background too much blurred at first sight, but I think it's acceptable! Keep it up!
