I really had no direction with this wallpaper..... Rather, while I was vectoring, I was thinking... The style of this manga seems more suited to flat and stylish o.o.... So I wasn't even sure if painting was a good idea... I went with it anyways and the result turned out like this lol.
Aside from vectoring the outlines for Naoto, everything was pretty much painted. Since I had no idea what to do with the background, I thought that fire would be the best I could think of considering the scene of the manga.
I started painting random silhouettes of what random stuff there would be in the background, and eventually while stroking around they became shapes.
Then I was at a loss at how to do the flames... I just one of the given brushes in photoshop and started messing with the settings and tried to make it flame like while I was painting. I resorted to using the smudge to make it more flame like. This part made my hand hurt... really badly lol... Tried switching hands for a few minutes to let my hand get a break lol.
The random structures looked... oddly fine when it should be burning lol... So I added black burning parts to the structures.
I felt that Naoto doesn't seem to stand out much while being overwhelmed by everything else lol.... Since the scene seemed pretty epic and naoto looks fairly concentrated, I decided to make a glow that emphasizes her killing intent.
Then I added vague smokes in the remaining sky visible.
Overall.. This wallpaper is random and chaotic... But I tried lol.

You say that you tried, but I think you did more than that. I love the intensity of the final result, especially the brown version. The original scene was foreboding and there was a serious possibility, of losing some of that intensity by singling Naoto out. You did not lose intensity. You added to the intensity. I can feel Naoto's thoughts in this one. She is thinking, I'm going through Hell and I am glad you are here with me so I can kill you, and make sure that your soul wont have far to travel when you die. It is like hearing someone say I'm going to kill you and ****on your grave. You understand immediately that they're intensely upset about whatever the transgression was. I love the theme of this one. This is an absolutely beautiful leap from the original image you had to work with! Love the styles of painting in it, and the way you refined the details on her face and hair in conjunction with the smoothness of the painting. Really cool style with the flames too, it's different, but really works with the rest of it!

this is really nice^^ i love when one starts to draw n u just let ur hand lead instead of ur intentions, only time will tell what the end result will be and this result is enough to fill the satisfaction one wants. you did an amazing job with this wall, the background looks terrific, the black flames look good there but i think you could've added more depth into them, like highlights and stuff, they seem too flat and need depth into them. naoto looks great, the highlights on her are good and the glow did make her stand out, which is good since she seems to be coloured like the background, the sword in her hands i would say is my favorite part^^ one thing that really REALLY bugged me is, the flames, ok they're blue, thats cool, but the smudging on them is..... it looks more like smudged tooth paste than flames, i know flames r hard but check out this link it's a tut about flames, u can easily draw flames if u follow this tut and add a bit of ur experience to it^^ just dont take this the wrong way, im only saying this cause i really like this wall and the flames just put me off, but i still hope you give it another try^^

Unfortunatelly, the tutorial didn't work out well for me. The flames became more like strange vines instead ^^'.... Adding too much highlights also made the eye focus on the flames instead of Naoto.
Not quite sure if it helps, I added vague color changes to the front flames so that it won't seem nearly as flat.

well I'm glad you tried the tut =3 shame it didn't work out but practice makes perfect.... well there's no such thing as perfect but we try to come close^^ but there are many tutorials online that will help u in making flames or the like^^ so you should search online n see, I learned most of my skill from tutorials online. I hope you can find wat you need cause I'm looking forward to ur future works^^

WOW this is a OMG different type of DOGS wallpaper! It's been a while since I last saw one!
The thumbnail really attracted me to it because there is this cool, dark mood I like the hair as well as the dress. I prefer the original one better also!

Nice but somehow dark. The original glowing effect around the Katana and his body had disappear. Suggest to add some light around the Katana =)

this is so hauntingly good. the palettes of all your revisions are gut-wrenching (in a good way, of course), and i find it hard to believe that this is a vector. my eyes go straight to the character even if the background in itself is something very beautiful. this is ridiculously wonderful. /bows
