EDIT: Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! It's truly an honor to be highlighted.
So I was just looking around the Scan Gallery and came across these two for Princess Mononoke:http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/scans/Princess-Mononoke/item34930/http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/scans/Princess-Mononoke/item18945/The placement of the two and the angle were just so similar that I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Plus that empty space in front of the wolf was just begging to be filled.
The problem with compilation is that if you put a lot of work into it and get it right, no one believes that you even did anything. I'm still glad it came out as well as it did though there still are some things that could be improved upon. I really don't see many shots of both Ashitaka and Mononoke being bad@ss together so I wanted to accomplish that with this piece. Yes Ashitaka is supposed to be the "peace maker" and everything but... well... yeah, call it a moment of weakness on my part.
While I didn't vectorize the image, I did completely repaint San, Ashitiaka, the deer, and wolf since the scans were rather messy. I also re-inked Ashitaka since I had to shrink him down and intensified all the shadows on him to fit the surrounding environment. Then I painted him a normal arm, a few more arrows, and his scar.
The fire was made completely by me and was certainly the most enjoyable part of this endeavor. I had never done fire before so it was a new challenge. I was really trying to capture a "moment in time" with this, thus the blur effect to give everything more movement. So many walls nowadays are just some character standing wistfully in front of a pretty sky or design. I wanted to really give more action to this piece.
I had planned on making a longer title but... I dunno... personally, I don't think it needs more. War is such a short word but it signifies so much. Love, hate, anger, pain, death, fear, freedom, oppression, desire for peace. So many feelings that can be expressed by a simple, three letter word. I was worried that the text would really flatten the depth of the image but I think it worked out fine. I made it small because in a way I wanted to signify how the word itself can not seriously emote the horrors that arise from it. We take the concept of war so lightly at times; in text books, video games, movies, and the daily newspaper. I wanted to bring that concept forth as well.
Went for the widescreen effect again because Miyazaki is just that epic. Truth be told, I worked on this piece and didn't attempt to crop it to a wall resolution until finishing. I couldn't bring myself to nearly cutting the thing in half to abide by the necessary wallpaper sizes. So instead I gave it the movie appeal. I had half the mind of just putting it up at Widescreen 1920x1200 but decided that it would then be unusable by a majority of the populace on AP. I'm afraid I don't know how to post up more than one resolution on here (I tried checking the AP Guide but found nothing). If someone has any pointers on how to do it, I'd be happy to post up a widescreen version. My apologies.
It's a very intense image so I can understand why it might not be considered good "wallpaper material" seeing as it might be rather busy on your desktop. Nonetheless, I did enjoy making this piece and am glad that I finished it. Please tell me what you think if you have a moment. :)

I checked out the scans you used, and wowza. Your wallpaper is a great idea + flawless execution in action :3 And you will be able to upload different resolution aspects AP v.5, so you could always add widescreen later on ^^

Perfect movement. Highlight worthy in my opinion.

This is an absolutely amazing wallpaper. Great layout, excellent scan selection and flawless execution. This is definitely a special piece of work.
6 years, 3 months ago
I absolutely love it :) The quality is great and the motion implied by the image is just beautiful. Great use of scans... colors are rich... epic is all that can be said to describe it. Isn't too busy a scene for my taste, I think it's an excellent paper. I'd love to d/l a widescreen version without the black bars hint hint nudge nudge. Faves :3

Woww~ This wall completely blew me away XD It's THAT good :D Everything in this wall was perfectly executed & it's VERY creative. At first, I thought, here we go again with using one image/cleaning wallpaperm >.>But then I saw the scans & read your description about this wall in all the things your did to make it that way, I was really amazed ^____________^ Excellent job~ Keep up the good work~ :] +fav

Great composition and sense of movement, it's something that we rarely see in anime wallpapers (with all the stylistic/abstract/minimalistic trend going on), it is indeed definetely worth of an highlight.
6 years, 3 months ago
I looks like it should of been in the movie. What a great wallpaper. The sense of movement is great it looks like it is going to pop right out at you. Keep up the great work +fav.

Great use of motion blur - a very difficult skill to master in wallpapers. You've really done a great job of focusing on the characters and emphasizing the motion of the piece. You really deserve the hilighted spot and all the dozens of favourites I'm sure you'll get! Keep up the excellent work!
6 years, 3 months ago
Nice wall and the whole job you did on the scans was great. However I don't approve of the comment you made on today's walls about a single character and the sky.I mean stuff like that is what goes on a desktop .... I really wouldn't like seeing a rabid goat jumping out of the screen every time I turn on my PC.
6 years, 3 months ago
I like this! I would rather it be widescreen without the letterboxing but it is still nice. ^_^
6 years, 3 months ago
Oh! No no, I didn't mean those types of walls are bad, just that I see so many of those nowadays so that I wanted to do something different. I completely agree that I wouldn't want something so intense on my desktop all the time ^^;; Sorry if I said that in a way that would cause any confusion.
And thank you tremendously to everyone who's commented on this. Your words really help me have more faith in my skills as an artist. I know that if we all just focus our skills on a goal we really care about we can create wonders. :)

amazing! only 2 hours and its already highlighted. I think this is definitely worthy of a highlight. I agree with shinn about how its totally different from what we usually see.
I totally agree! Personally, I think action pieces are so hard! if you make mistakes on the blurring, the piece can come out so odd-looking and you cant get the effect you want. But the way you did is perfect. Not so much blurring that you can't tell whats going on, but enough so that they look like theyre going at high speed!
hahah, when I first saw the wallpaper I actually thought this scene occured in the movie (thats how good this is!) and then I realized that Ashitaka originally wasnt in the little stampede. hehe.
fire looks very realistic and awesome!
6 years, 3 months ago
amazing work on combining the two scans! I love the movement and the atmosphere and the fire you added gives the wallpaper a great touch of fantasy and action! favie

I agree with AP on this one, this piece deserved to be highlighted. AMAZING JOB!!!! I fell in love with it the minute I saw it and just had to download it. Superb. That's all. ^_^ *faves*

I agree with the highlight! It was a brilliant idea you had! The intensity! One of the best anime movies out there! +Favorites!
6 years, 3 months ago
Fantastic piece of work. You truly did mange to capture the intensity and essence of the moment in this wallpaper. I would also like to compliment you for the awesome job of using motion blur which is executed with much skill (I'm typically not a fan of this kind of blurring but this is a great exception!).
It is of no surprise that your favorite portion of the project; the embers look realistic and animated and generally add levels of action to your wallpaper rather than just being unnecessary noise as apparent in some other walls.
My only gripe is that you didn't decide to release it in 1920x1200 resolution as planned (I'll probably PM you for a request later, so don't be surprised)!
Certainly a highly regarded piece of work here, definitely a top pick this month. Thank you for your work and efforts!

wow this is breath taking it fills like im right in the movie.this shows that you a lot of creativity in you.if Hayao Miyazaki saw this i think he would be pleased on how well you captured the characters im this wall.

your creativity and the motion of this wall is superb. i usually like a little more photoshop magic, glow-wise, but this is really a dynamic scene. great job!

God do i love this movie, my favorite of all ghibli films. I was doing to do a very similar wallpaper to this (with that same scan and all) and I kinda put it off cause it required alot of work, good thing I did cause you made this wallpaper and it came out GREAT. Love the colors, atmosphere... ugh! too bad it's not widescreen!

it's certainly a nice idea. and great execution. but I feel that there can be more to make the scenen GranDeR. especially color wise. sort of give the characters a more popping feel like they're going to rush towards you out of the screen. using the appropriate colors can help achieve that! great work!
6 years, 3 months ago
very nice composition you did... i just didn't like of the black stripes that you inserted on the wall...
a wide resolution would be better, imho...
anyway, good work (and idea!) on this wall! ;-)

What a beautiful idea! Just wow. Can't believe how well those scans can fit together just looking at each individually. Just the fact that you saw this opportunity is amazing, something I'd have never thought of. I can't wait until we get the wide screen version as well!
The motion blur really gave the movement you intended and I do especially love the added flame effect. Just so naturally war-like and fits well with the whole scene! Of course, really appreciate the repainting of the characters to fit them with the glowing flames.
Great piece and hope to see more from you!

Congrats on being highlighted =] I like the idea of focusing on her face and making everything a blur. It makes it looks surreal. I also like the "illusion" of a widescreen wallpaper =]

I...I absolutely cannot believe what you did. Do you realize what you've made? A masterpiece.. A true, original masterpiece. The combination of both scans fits in so perfectly that it made me think that you just used one scan originally. Everything about this wall..is just flawless. This is by far one of the BEST walls I have seen in a long time and by far the BEST Princess Mononoke I have ever had the privilage to lay eyes upon. I do have to admit though, I only wish it was a bit bigger so I could use it on my desktop, but alas. Still, I feel honored just by being able to view this magnificiant work of art. Favorite for me, biiig time favorite =3. You are absolutely amazing.

Kreevup! (not a real word) What originality! It really stirs up my memories and feelings of love for this movie (and I feel like crying TT_TT)! I'm truly moved!
For some reason though, the boldness of the outline doesn't feel right to me, but that was the original image, so...
VERY NICE!!!

Wow! It is such a sweet wall. I love how it is nothing but action. Personally, my eyes can't take the blur for too long but that is just me. But it is a brilliant idea and I liked how it turned out. Great Job! :)

I love the overall outcome of the wall by combining the two scans. It actually looks like a real scene from the movie.
6 years, 3 months ago
I love it. The colors are vibrant and the scene is very action entangled. The characters have great quality to them and I feel the blur used on the characters worked well with the scene. Great job and I don't see any negatives, at least not any obvious ones.

You have definitely over come one of the hard skill that most designer couldn't able to do. You able to bring layer of two different event and manage to adjust the motion, blur, and brightness for both character that blend into one fantastic event. When I look into this picture it give me the panic, danger and thrill feeling as I was one of the character in there. This is great skill that many hope to achieve and you give me aspire and example that I could use to enchant my design. Nicely done! ^^

Congrats on the feature, you really deserve it. This wallpaper is amazing, there really aren't enough original Princess Mononoke wallpapers out there.
The amount of work you put in really has paid off. The image looks like it should have always been that way and I love the addition of the "embers". You really get the feel of the end of the film in this wall and that's why it work so well. I think I may be biased though as Princess Mononoke is one of my favourite films XD
Congrats again and I'm definatly going to have to add this to my faves.

6 years, 3 months ago
my goodness! i haven't faved a wall in quite some time, but this one DEFINITELY deserves the credit. seriously.. wow. the repainting and everything is amazing and the way you placed the scans together is flawless. the blurring also really adds to the movement of the piece. the colours you used for sky are great and the fire is perfect! ahh i love it!! haha. the only beef i have with it (and it's not even anything major) is with the text. the font is fine but the placement of it is kind of bugging me... maybe if it was rearranged in such a way that it wasn't like a pyramid or something it may be better... i know how hard it is to use text when you work so hard on the rest of the wall though, so it's not even a big deal because the rest is AMAZING!
keep up the great work!
ps: congrats on getting highlighted. you deserve it!
6 years, 3 months ago
absolutely fabulous!!! ashitaka looks like he belongs in that scene. don't miss the wolf at all. and the shadows...the attention to detail on this wall is simply splendid. thought too much motion blur does give one a headache if stared at too long. ah anyway, NICE ONE!!!

At first I thought this was another blown up scan or vectorised image (though thought there would be something else if it were a highlighted wallpaper), but after reading about how you made it and seeing the original scans, I'm very impressed.
You're right: If none were the wiser, it'd look like you didn't do anything at all. But that in itself means that you did a great job at composition. Well done on a vibrant piece.

i really don't know what to say the movement are great i can feel it move also the characters are in the perfect place but there is one thing i don't understand near the second character there is no fire i think its a great work something new to me because all the wall i saw it was no movement just a character in a place or in nature but for this its like a snap
from a movie i really like the movement in this wall and i wait for something more peaceful from you and also with movement great work continue add to my favorite :)

I like this wallpaper ^^ nice coloring and blur...it's just that, I think that war should be a little bit "dirtier" and "gruesome", like in real life....well, anyways, just my opinion. great job, anyways =)

Wow, this one looks fantastic ! The widescreen effect is a great idea, it fits the theatrical style of Mononoke Hime perfect. The motion blur effect is also brilliant. I have nothing to complain about this great piece of art.

Very nicely done, the blurring effect is used with a exsquisite perfection here, and is what probably makes the fact that this is actually two in one almost nonexstently noticable.
6 years, 3 months ago
wow, if I haven't watched Mononoke...I would've thought that this scene truly happened! This is amazing! "WOW" is the only adjective I could think of. I am so amazed by the wallpaper! First, I really like the contrast between the characters and the background. The contrast makes Princess Mononoke stands out of the dark background, like she IS the heroine. Second is the blurry motion effect, which make the mood of the scene very serious, and it looks as if you are right there in the scenes. This is definitely suitable for the movie cover!

Wow that's a great image you've put together there, although I don't think it really works as a wallpaper per se. It looks AWESOME as a still-image of a frame of a scene (that of course, like the label said, didn't happen =) ), but as a wallpaper, I think it's just too "distracting," especially with the accompanying text. With all the energy and fervor in the visual form, it doesn't take the written word to convey that there is a battle going on. Mmm would make an excellent postcard too!

Another magnificent wallpaper. I just love this, yes I really do I think that you've captured this particular scene splendidly. I really like the look of how fast paced everything is and the characters are crystal clear as they should be. It's a really beautiful wallpaper and simply love it.

When looking at this Wall, the first thing that comes to mind is the song 'journey to the west' from the movie, and with it comes a surreal image of the event (although it never happened) coming straight from the wall as a source of inspiration. It captures the mind... inspiring. Fav

This is breathtaking, loved the sparks of the fire and the rest goes well with it

Nice combination! Really brilliant cause you made such two irrelative scans so smoothly together. Though as to the story itself, Ashitaka and Princess Mononoke may never fight together XD. And as what you said, you put a lot of work into it and get it right, no one believes that you even did anything. and I'm almost that kind of one to regard this wall really did nothing on technics~ XD Anyway, this is a brillant, nice, and high quality wallpaper!
