New to wallpaper making (first one!), not so new to photoshop. I usually just do touch-up jobs, so this time I wanted to do something that involved a little more creativity. I'm an art aficando, so I wanted to do something that would pay homage to some of my favorite artists, and hence, this wallpaper was born. In this paper, I used Van Gogh's "The Starry Night" as my main focus, and shifted its perspective from one that was earthly based, to one of a galaxy. To show its canvas roots however, I textured it so that it would appear more like a painting, yet also evoke an otherworldly feel at the same time. I also wanted to capture the somber and deathly cold feel of space, so I used color combinations that would help accentuate this.
About the background: I did several treatments on the painting so that I could isolate the wispy wind curls. After that, I made a handmade star field using a tutorial I found on gallery.artofgregmartin.com, blended the star field and painting together, and then did further treatments and adjustments. I also added a little texture using stocks I found on the "Stock XChng."
The character: This paper features Count Cain of the "God Child" and "Count Cain" series by YUKI Kaori of "Angel Sanctuary" fame. I found the scan on "Random Galleries" (random-galleries.com), extracted it, and then shopped and blended it. I also made the top portion of his head slightly transparent so that it would seem as though he were 'growing' from the space dust, so to speak. Hopefully that attempt came out successful! I wanted to make his sides more transparent too, but since it didn't come out very successful, I dropped it.
note: Please view fullscreen; thumbnails do not do justice to the fine detail and stars.

Oh hey you removed the stars from overlapping the character. See, it looks a lot better now. ;D I told you before in SZ about how i liked your idea with background. And as i've said earlier, the blending of the character with the bg is good. ^_^
Good job and keep it up. =D

from the sheer lack of Cain wallpapers alone it makes this a gem. thanks

I did consider at one point adding more to the background, but then decided against it because I felt it would overpower the character, and I wanted the two to complement each other.

Beautiful. I love the way Cain looks like in the middle of such a dark wall. However, the background is still nice and not overdarkened. Really a wonderful wall. Keep up that good work.

I really love your idea of setting Cain against Van Gogh's Starry Night! <3 I think you have really achieved your goals of otherworldly, somber and cold feelings - which go really well with Cain's pose in that picture - the way he holds his arms, plus the mesmerizing look in his eyes. Your work on the background complements his expression very-very well, and this harmony makes for a very intense image! Thank you for sharing with us. :)
