The most of Linux distributions provide a package manager (and I think that Ubuntu's Software Center is not the best one). And for me it's pretty easy to get used to build a package from source, furthermore there are not so many situations when you will have to do it, because there're such things like layman, AUR, user repos etc.

You doesn't have to run jar and py from command line, you can easily configure your system to do it like Windows does, but it's easier to configure when you run them from command line.

I agree that some distros are not as easy to install as Ubuntu, but I don't understand what did you mean about "Windows is Windows, but Mandriva is not Ubuntu". Windows is a series of OS, but Ubuntu and Mandriva are OS. Windows 3.1 is not Windows 7, isn't it?
