MS Office vs OpenOffice.org

Until I stop having problems with the display of math formulas when I send/receive form other team members, Open Office has a lot to improve from my point of view.

I agree.

I'm sticking to Office for now as I use Excel extensively and there is not very many spreadsheet programs out there that can compare in terms of flexibility and extensive library of formulas.

Wow. The work on the hair and background is godlike. Only complaint would be the clouds; they seem a bit pasty. Also, the way the clouds are drawn, makes me think that the sun is on the left side, even though the shadows on the character make it seem it's on the left side o.o;;

All in all, excellent work, anolibb, your effort was well worth it. ^^.

Suggestion on Mainstream PC Spec.

A question: would you be overclocking at all? If you do, then you could drop the processor by a notch (e6400) to save some money instead. As DeepDragoon's stated, 2MB of L2 cache won't impact performance by much in comparison to 4MB of L2 cache.

In the case of not overclocking, dropping the memory to DDR2-667 or even lower to DDR2-533 shouldn't be a problem as well. C2Ds are limited by their FSB to 1066 (266 quad pumped), so DDR2-533 should be the minimum possible memory speed for C2Ds.

And does a 8800GTS cost 500$? o.O;

Everything else seems to look good. Nice system BTW. =D

Quad cores and bearlake?

Anyone ever tried the new quad cores?? when will they be affordable for a pc system ? hehe..

in any case I am waiting for the bearlake intel chip to see what happens. any advice?

In time, they will \o/. As stated above, the codename bearlake isn't a processor, it's a chipset instead. I'd love to have a quadcore to do speed up my running distributed programs (read: f@h) and video encoding, but it's expensive at the moment. =\

Intel's current "Quad" core is not a true native quad core. It's really 2 dual-cores slapped onto the same chip. So it's more like 2 dual-core CPUs with it's performance then a true quad. Plus with Intel Dual-core technology you only use the 2nd core when the first one is under full load unless the software is specifically coded to make use of multiple cores. So that hurts the "quad" core performance even more. Intel is just playing with words to get uninformed consumers to spend their hard earned money. Intel has always played that game and it's come back to bite them more then once. The Itanium rings a bell.

For now stick with a normal Dual Core CPU. Native Quad cores have already been demonstrated by AMD and we will see them soon enough by both AMD and Intel.

As for that overclock saying it's stable doesn't work because the system would only be used like that to see how high the overclock could go. In order to get the CPU that high the voltage has to be boosted well over safe levels (most likely a voltage mod to the motherboard pushing the Vcore to 2.5 or better as well) thus why LN2 cooling is needed. The chip would fry in a matter of seconds without the LN2.

With normal air cooling or water cooling the best I've seen 100% stable is in the 3.5-3.8 range. Go to a pelt (cold plate) or chilled water or phase change and 4.0+ is possible but with 65nm tech right now I don't see 5.0 because sustainable for very long nor stable enough for every day use.

-S1

Indeed. It's not a native quadcore-based processor. However, it does have four cores together, so quad-core it is. As for performance from that manufacturing method, it's still stellar and it hasn't reached a bottleneck yet.

Vista Vs. XP

I think I'll stick with XP for now.. I would like to check out Vista, but my operating system is fine the way it is now, so why change now! I figure just wait until it is out long enough for all the major bugs to be fixed, and then maybe switch over once programs start getting so that they require Vista (will likely be a few years, if at all). To me the Vista system looked like a combination between Windows and Mac. The animation and everything.. I like how Windows now works, and don't want to have to get used to another new operating system. It took me awhile when I had to learn how to use a Mac, and I don't want to have to take the time to learn Vista.. So, I'll stick with the XP thanks. . . Why change what works? However, I would like to upgrade my Office 2003 to 2007.. I'd like to get Publisher as well. My student edition didn't come with it.

I agree. There's really no need to upgrade right now at the moment, unless you just want the latest stuff. The only thing that I want in Vista is DX10, but no games at the moment support. Eventually they will, but until then, I'm sticking to XP.

i cant study lmao

i never studied before in my life...

but for those of you who think studying is like doing extra hwk then i have studied b 4 but i dun study very long i just go through a phase and 1 day i study like mad for like 3 hours then the next day and the next day i dun study no more :D Hahahaha. I can barely either. As what everyone said before, I find it boring and it feels like it doesn't help very much. I find homework better...then again, I've a lot to work with... -_-;;;

I looove the piano <3 I've been playing for nine years now, so I'm pretty decent at it ^^ I love playing stuff from videogames and anime, especially Final Fantasy. Arnold Morrison and Michael Huang are gods! They run http://www.geocities.com/doofusmusic1 and www.fantasyreborn.com, respectively. Fantasy Reborn has some of the best piano FF arrangements I've ever seen.

Same here, but probably eight years or so instead. I don't play as much as I used to but listening to them is very soothing. Micheal Huang is a god [RAWR] and you should hear the Video Game Pianist also. He's crazy too.

Acrisius: fREEEDOM!!!! :morelove: hmmmm.....this is nice...the technical feel is good (as i love gundam specs ^_^;), though I think that the ORB insigna looks a bit out of place. Maybe instead, you could have placed the gundam abbreviations there. Just a thought.

~shirouxkamui: you actualy look at it pixel by pixel or so I think? o_o

It's very simple and beautiful. I like the ripple and the clean cut lines. My only gripe is that its small.

what do you guys and gals prefer, dubbed versions or subbed?

Srange thing with DUBs is: - Americans (example) just talk with a little emotion (not everyone). - Japanese talk like they're actually doing what's happening in the anime, a lot of emotion etc.

Wonder how they do that with hentai :)

Yes, I think most dubs -- except for a notable few that I have seen so far, e.g. Trigun -- just suck at conveying emotions. *thinks of gundam seed* :twitch:

I know someone that bought an alienware a year or two back and its the best. He's still using it today and it's still good. I also concur with trismugistus. Building one from scratch is much cheaper than buying a custom-built pc.
