Well, using a Virtual Environment give the advantage that you don't have to restart your computer, this is very useful for example when I'm testing the compatibility of websites in different web browsers, as I can leave all my development programs open. It also provides an isolated environment, which can be easily cloned. So getting a virus or some other nasty is no problem.
The downside of using virtual environments is that they don't (yet) have graphics acceleration, so gaming is out. Also various other things like CD burning and certain programs won't work, and to get everything running smoothly you need a decently specced computer, and enough hard disk space
