Original or Pirated?

Hard to say, sadly i don't make that much money to go and buy original DVDs of all my favourite animes. . . it does cost a fair bit per DVD to all those who don't leech off rich parents or like to blow the majority of their money on original DVDs, so lets ease up a bit on the high minded morality.

$36O AU for a whole anime series ? (6 x 6 + box) is a bit over the top imo. Sure it's good ethics to support the artists and producers but at over 3oo a pop just to watch a series? I could go the movies for a long time with that, not to mention a wide array of other venues or more worthwhile investments to spend the money i earn. So while parting money to buying some of the better classic series (which are cheaper as they sell in already boxed sets) works for me, buying each DVD as it comes out for $3o+ bucks... no thanks i'll stick to bittorrent anyday.

What do you do when you feel crappy?

Stare blankly into space for a few hours in my "what if" world. Write when it's rather bad. Make a half-hearted attempt to create some art that's half decent.

Music and a hot drink usually lift my spirits though.

Stop global hunger

They say talk is cheap, action would be much more desirable to counter this problem. The problem of global hunger is a rather overwhelming one starts to comprehend the complexity and seriousness of the situation. To shrug our shoulders and say it's too daunting or complex for me to solve, let someone else with more money or power try and deal with it seems to be the most common response.

Like others have already mentioned and although it may sound like a corny line. If the problem is to be solved or improved, the population must first realize the problem and then take the appropriate action to assist.

Kind of like a double edged sword isn't? Guess it really depends on what the majority of people use it for. Certainly governments will institute laws and regulations that will reduce the risk of misuse of this technology, if there is enough opposition they might even not allow it to be used.

Then again if it can stop those serious illness before they can occur, families with histories of cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's etc then I'm all for it.

Yes, i would do it for my children if i had the chance. My family has diabetes on one side and cancer and premature eyesight loss on the other. (looking forward to aging)

As it being moral? you cant really give a one straight answer for that kind of question. It all depends on how people use it for.

Buy a small island in the middle of the ocean and create my own version of Sealand.

Turn it into a new Ibiza party island and enjoy for the rest of my life.

Or just buying Ibiza works too.

Create my own charity.

Investing it all and settling into a quiet place in New Zealand sounds good too.

Crocodile eats 9 years old boy

Avatar for shattered-glass

I must say i am generally shocked with the general disregard for the life of a human being.

Both arguments against the death of the crocodile involved and who should received more sympathy seem rather trivial when one will try and consider the anguish the boy's death would've bought to his family and community. If the boy was your younger brother would you feel the same way, justifying the crocodile in it's actions? You would most likely be too emotional / hysterical to make any rational decision.

Secondly the crocodile was not killed for the sole purpose of revenge. Rather the animal was slain for the purpose for collecting evidence namely the boy's body for use for a case against any legal action that may be taken against the park's owner and caretakers and more importantly to return his remains to his family.

Also let's also keep in mind that the boy may not possess adequate education or knowledge surrounding foreign dangerous animals (let us note that the crocodile is not native to mainland china), or that his country may not have the many precautionary and stringent laws and measures that may exist in your country. Awareness education, laws and safeguards regarding the caring and maintenance of dangerous animals.

I respect your views and the freedom of speech but i cannot hide my shock or concern that some may hold the value and priority of human life so lowly. Of course the boy's actions weren't entirely wise, provoking a group of fully grown crocodiles is something even Stevie Erwin would be willing to do. But how many 9 year olds act and behave in a rational sensible manner? Many younger boys, teens and even some adults seem to possess the mentality that they are "invincible" and do not properly comprehend the possible dangers or consequences their actions may result in. We've all done stupid irrational things in our lives, how can we condemn a child for his mistake?

What happened was unfortunate, avoidable and tragic. No party is really solely and absolutely to blame for what happened so why pass judgment so decisively and blatantly when what occurred was really rather tragic and sensitive.

Is Life Creuler than Death??

Apology i totally agree with you.

I'm sure the majority of the population in this forum live each day without really noticing or appreciating the seemingly small but basic necessities. Food, clean water, a home, economic and social stability, devoid of fear of one's own life being threatened.

Instead of thinking inwardly and dwelling on one's own problems and and compelling yourself to believe that life is indeed full of misery and suffering of course your mentality is going to end up thinking death is indeed better then life.

Why not help someone else with problems that they cannot solve themselves? Volunteer at a charity aiding the homeless and/or oppressed, donate to Oxfarm or the Red cross? There's a million other people in this world worse off then you. Why not try and make a difference, even if it is just a small one. Once you start helping others, things in your life seem be alright and generally work out for the better.

Life at times can be cruel, but are you going to let that consume you and not do anything about it?

This is not chastisement, just another person's view on the matter.

As for drinks, for me i'd choose beer and such over spirits anyday. Goes for longer and not so detrimental to one's health. Plus i prefer to stay somber after some not so pleasant experiences. . . drunk pool accidents namely.

Being drunk isnt such a pleasant experience anyway.

Public Smoking

Here in Australia there are laws against smoking in most public places, bars and goverment areas. Sadly there's is virtually noone to enforce these laws, so there's really not much change at all, rather irritating for those who commute with chain smokers.

Also isn't passive smoker actually worse then smoking a cigarette anyway? Since you don't have a filter at all. . not to mention a health hazard for those who have lung or health problems.

Just echoing Clara again... most people really dont mind if you choose to smoke, hey it's your choice just give a moment's thought to those around you and their health before you light up.

Mmmm, the majority of the topics seem mostly trivial, but hey what is life without some fillers. Of course reading through the subject topic is what i'll usually do >_> and maybe the first 2 or 3 pages of replies. . . there's some really insane subjects that have dozens and dozens of replies.

I do like to put in my 2 cents in when i feel strongly about a certain issue. So i dont really tend to answer to many causal topics the bore i am. But having everyone conform and only talk about causal or serious topics would be rather boring wouldnt it? Mix it up a bit always works well, but questions that can be answered by a little research of thought kinda irk me. A few seconds of thought will take you a long way in some situations.

uhh... french fries or cheese sticks? pick whatever you like best?

Drink? Or drunk?

Myself i dont tend to drink often, every now and then for "social reasons" but i've never really enjoyed the taste of most alcohol and find it hard to see how people enjoy hard spirits in particular.

As for getting drunk. . . the thought of losing control and the contents of my stomach doesnt sound very appealing at all.

Almost forgot to correct you there. Alcohol does not add to overall body temperature. It actually decreases it. The feeling you get (warm, fuzzy feeling) when ingesting alcohol is but an astringent reaction with your mouth, throat, and stomach. It feels "warm" at first but once it gets into your system your temp goes down. Alcohol is more volatile than water and so it is first to leave your body by either evaporating from your skin or passing it through piss. A lot of it comes out through your skin (which is why an alcoholic reeks of the stuff) and evaporates, leaving you colder than you were before you started drinking.

Quite a bit of interesting information.

Do you believe in the tomb of Jesus?

Avatar for shattered-glass

Just wondering, how do they intend to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have in fact found Christ's tomb?

There is no accurate detailed description on his appearance in history let alone a DNA sample. . .

Records and documents of a Jesus and said wife and children found in the tomb do not prove beyond a doubt that those remains are in fact of those of Christ. Some solid evidence or logical, cohesive argument would be nice instead of speculation and assumption creating this undeserved amount of controversy.

Well most of the time my room looks like a bush turkey's nest - clothes, books and cables all heaped up in a great pile. I'm typically not a fan of cleaning my room but recently my boredom has been so severe that i devote a few hours to organize and relocate my stuff into their rightful places.

Although i still havnt seen the logic in folding clothes away in drawers only to take them out and wear them later, In my head i've always thought "why fold them when you can just shove clothes into the drawers any old way and save time not folding? : |"

Same deal with making your bed, why spend time smoothing out the sheets and making the bed after you slept in it only to mess it up later when you hop back in. : |

*Scratches head*

Could be that im just a dirty pig but that's somthing thats always been in the back of my mind.

Animal Slaughter

Purple-mirage / sophie123 your arguments pertaining the rights and welfare of animals were incoherent, irrational and insulting.

As mentioned in your post purple-mirage it is clear to any coherent person that animals are indeed not human, yet you seem to imply that animals possess the very necessary characteristics that differ sentient human beings from said animals, morality, aesthetics, creativity, imagination, aspiration and compassion to name some. Have you ever seen an animal create a symphony? a work of art? do you think a tiger feels any shred of remorse when it tears it's prey apart? They are not and will never be human, bearing this in mind how can you claim their deaths are inhumane?

Human beings have been omnivorous for thousands of years, we require the fat and proteins derived from meat to grow and survive. How can you suggest that our body isn't "made" to digest meat? Are you not aware that vegetarians require protein supplements to maintain a working healthy body? Why must you insist on challenging the laws of nature? We REQUIRE meat and the nutrients found in animals to lead a healthy life as stated by countless doctors and specialists in the medical field. The government in Australia even produced ads on TV to remind us of this fact. Please provide evidence to support this new-found shred of knowledge.

Your rebuttal to my arguments were brief, illogical and harboring the same irrational frame of mind that animals possess human characteristics therefore entitling them to the same rights privy to human beings. Do you know why humanity is governed by laws? why we are entitled rights? Because with the above mentioned characteristics defining us as human beings there is also a string of detrimental and flawed aspects of human nature that we as humans possess alone. Evil, hatred, selfishness, arrogance, lust, jealously etc etc. This breeds a monstrosity that can kill, plunder and destroy on catastrophic scale. Hilter, Stalin and Mao ring a bell?

We have been forced to designed laws and rights to protect ourselves from torture, injury, loss of life, deprivation of freedom to spell it out. Animals do not possess these negative qualities. It is not evil for another animal to feed off it's prey to survive. These qualities are accursed to us, so why do animals need protection in the form of laws and rights from something that doesn't exist in their world? Protection against humans you might say? In the slaughterhouse as you name it, the method of ending an animal's life as swiftly and efficiently as possible has been perfected over decades, i have seen cows attempting to mate before being killed, do you really think they know what's ahead of them? There is no cry for help, no sobbing of tears, no last dying screams they are not human. Go and pay your nearest slaughterhouse before you condemn their procedures. Cruelty against animals for no apparent reason? As i mentioned before i'd much rather they maim or injury an animal then another human being.

And yes lets ponder a bit on who started wars? Misguided, demonic and merciless people. Now lets take a brief moment to contemplate about the victims and innocents that were killed or murdered, the masses of those who affected by the plague of war, soldiers and servicemen fighting for their country and against those that would deny them of their rights and freedom. You would seriously fault them? Lay the blame upon those who had no control on their surrounding environment as it was destroy around them? Those who died and suffered to famine and natural disasters you have the audacity to insist it was their fault that they were subjected to pain and death?

Contemplate and plan your argument and support it with accredited evidence or logical reasoning without sensationalism or emotionalism as fore-mentioned by ironwarrior. I sincerely hope this frame of mind passes with maturity. If you want to make a difference in this world donate to a charity, make someone's life better, change the conditions in which a child is forced to live in everyday. You'll actually get a sincere reply of gratitude and an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment that you will not receive in helping an animal who's only thoughts are to feed and mate.

I respect those who make their own decision not to consume meat, but i do not support those who insist / force their views upon others.

Social acceptance

Striving for social acceptance seems like a rather superficial, mundane form of behavior. The definition of what is "socially acceptable" changes so frequently why subject yourself to becoming something you know isn't you? Those who look down on others enjoying doing the things they enjoy usually seem to harbor a blind, inability to understand and embrace difference.

And hell, wouldn't it be a dull world if everyone adhered to the things that were socially acceptable?

My two cents, be weird, be different it's sure is more exciting then being normal:).
