GENTLEMEN.

I have called you here today to let you know about our EVIL PLANS.

We have a number of user focused features planned to be added to AP soon, including site wide css themes, customization of the layout of your wallpaper/vector pages, the ability to upload images directly into your comments and an update of userpages.

BUT THERE IS SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT.

IT HAD TO COME FIRST.

CUSTOM TITLES.

You can put a short title next to your username if you have upgraded to pro.

THIS. CHANGES. EVERYTHING.

You can add your custom title if you go to your dashboard and look for title in the side bar!

oh yes! :D I look forward to other new features!!!

I admit that I've been more familiar with V5... as well as the other AP revisions since 2007 (they look the same, not sure for the features) so V6 is quite a great adjustment for me...

Bringing back custom titles is big news? I obviously don't understand the irony/sarcasm/joke/whatever this is, not to mention the pro part for a basic feature that almost every forum has.

OBVIOUSLY, BECAUSE CUSTOM TITLES ARE SO NEW THAT THEY DESERVE CAPS UNLIKE ACTUAL NEW FEATURES WE HAVEN'T SEEN BEFORE.

Aww so only Pro members get to use custom titles? But on the previous version everyone was allowed to do that. :< Looking forward to those other new features though. ^^

Mm...I didn't really notice the Pro thing much until now. So like, wallers submit, and people can download them for a price now..? o_o; I'm kind of missing out on the incentive to submit xD don't get me wrong, I've loved AP since I joined ><

I guess what bothers me is this:

"$29.99 one time!" "$14.99 one time!" "Get unrestricted access to all wallpapers and vectors. This feature is for the life of your account and does not expire!"

It feels like a commercializing of our wallpapers and vectors, for profit. I don't remember this feature being around before, but if it were, it still rings the same sour note imo =/.

I am just one guy here coding this website. When I started AP we had unrestricted access to download whatever you want and ended up having to pay for the enormous bandwidth bill at the end of each month. We weren't going to last very long doing that so I implemented what I thought was a fair system for limiting the amount of bandwidth used per month by limiting wallpaper downloads to 15 per day. Now if you want more per day you could simply comment on wallpapers, upload something or donate to cover some of the costs of bandwidth used. Now I think downloading up to 15 wallpapers every day is fair, it used to be less per day but the price of bandwidth per GB has decreased over the years so I was able to increase it. You may not agree with this policy and I don't expect everyone to but I'm trying to do a good job of helping you showcase your work in the prettiest way possible while still staying online.

I understand. Thank you for answering me so honestly :). And I appreciate you hearing me out.

The main thing that prompted my question was:

All this art is ether generated by users, or the original anime/manga artists themselves (and there's another gray area there, but usually there doesn't seem to be a problem as long as everything is for 'non-commercial use')
Then there's the 'for-profit' route: if someone is going to pay to reach this kind of art, the people who generated them in the first place should receive their fair share of the pie.
Or, the 'non-profit' (completely free) route: if everything is being showcased without charging anyone for anything to do it, then it works as a kind of open-source database, where everyone gains and contributes with no monetary return.

If you describe it as 'money to support the server so this whole place is possible to begin with,' I think it would provide a greater level of transparency to both the people paying, and the people contributing their wallpapers and vectors.

Perhaps it would help if you could describe what those funds are to be used for, etc, in the Pro page somewhere? I have to pay for server costs myself, both for my own hobbies and professionally, and you're right. It costs a lot to run a place like this, and definitely a LOT of time. It may help if you let people get a better idea of what resources are required, and what everyone is getting in return for signing up and submitting wallpapers/vectors, or signing up for Pro and paying to see those wallpapers/vectors. Likewise, the artists would also understand what their art is being used for, outside of simply displaying them in the community.

Again, thanks for hearing me out. I'd love to know your thoughts on this.
