Subbing
I think the quality of subs depends on the groups, some work it more carefully and others don't. I've never seen any horrible quality subs so I don't know how it feels to watch a really bad subbed anime, but I'm not sure if you really should criticize them, because basically these people are doing it for free and spending their free time to do it (they have jobs, studies, family, leisure time too).

Sometimes what happens is that the subbers, especially on just released series, are the Chinese subbers. They do everything in Chinese, and then stick it through something like Babelfish, and out pops what you call Chinglish. But I do agree that if you know English, as well as Japanese, at least check your work before you let it on to the internet. Some of the large groups will make these corrections, but a lot of the smaller groups will not. Though I will say I was impressed with the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society subs by some group called Shinsekai. They haven't done anything else, but when I got the movie raw, all of the other subs were the Chinglish subs, so they made no grammatical sense. These guys actually did something worthwhile and corrected the errors, and timings.
I try not to be too picky about fansubbers' subtitles - I mean it's for free and beggers can't be choosers. Most of the time with the more popular anime series, we can choose which fansubs to download or watch.
Yeap, if you want good quality fansubs just check the anime released from a pretty well known (as in reputation wise) group.

I so agree with the fact that bad subs are irking!! Even i prefer watching anime with subs.. I feel they are way better than the dubbed versions
I never had such problems while watching subs...
I think think those mistakes would only irritate me if they'd destroy the content of a conversation or even the anime's story (thank god I never saw a sub with such a bad mistake...)
I'm really glad that there are people, who sub these great animes for free! I have no idea what I would do without them... (maybe going to get my self killed or something else..XD)
I think these groups are only humans too, so they make mistakes and aren't perfect.

Hey, if you're going to be a grammar whore then at least spell Code Geass right.PsidragonCode Gaess for instance is unfortunately a victim of this. Thank God other subgroups picked up this and did a good job. Well this is just my thoughts on this. Have you guys encountered subs that were really bad?
I personally wish more groups used mkv and used softsub.
Softsub is text that basically floats above the picture without writing on it.
Softsubs make it easier to edit, so if I spot a spelling mistake I can unmux it and edit it.

LOL @ Kurz's comment! But otherwise, remember that the subbers are already taking some of their own free time to allow you to watch a Japanese show which you would not have had the chance to watch otherwise... (until it's released wherever you are in the dubbed version of your locale) But I also have to agree. If you are subbing a show you should at least show some pride in what you are doing. It's similar to handing in an essay with grammar and spelling mistakes everywhere. It's just not cricket. :p
What I tend to do is watch for the more reputable subbing groups out there. Those which have extensive QC and editing processes should be able to pick up mistakes in spelling and grammar should there be any. I used to QC for a subbing group and it really did take out a lot of my time.
I think what we must remember that if it's the odd mistake here or there, then they probably are trying to the best they can do; it's just sometimes, things do slip through the net.

I didn't encounter that problem of a subtitle having grammatical mistakes but if it does I wouldn't care much anyways. What really annoys me is the dub voice instead becuz the real voice sounds alot better. But sometimes i use subtitle to learn language that i dunno like japanese and not all the time its the exact translation that's what something annoys me too.
Yeah, I see this often. someitmes it gets so bad I can\'t stand to watch and just wait for another group\'s subs that\'s better. Some groups just like to rush and they always make grammar mistakes or they forget to sub some parts.
One time, I was watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and the subs were just weird. The group didn\'t sub the episode seriously, meaning the subs weren\'t in proper English, they put lots of slang. I just couldn\'t stand it so i had to wait for other group subbing (who was better).

I have seen many animes only subbed since I hate dubbed more than anything else. And I can´t say that I ever have been bothered of bad spelling in a subed anime.
There is nothing more annoying than watching a subed anime with incredibly wrong subs. Like, for example i bought the whole Inuyasha series on ebay and like the first couple of episodes were fine then all a sudden Inuyasha's name wasn't even Inuyasha anymore, that's when you get really pissed.
Yeah, can't deny that it is frustrating to see bad subbing...

I've never seen it personally, but I don't feel it would be that bad. Unless it gets to the point where you can't tell what is being said; then I would have no problem with a few grammar mistakes. The fact that they took time out of their live to translate is enough for me to admire them, hehehehe.
