Instrumental or Lyrical?
I feel like discussing this, because it is such an important part of music that people sometimes think they’re treating evenly, but are actually not.
Most of the people nowadays are gonna say they prefer music with lyrics, because that’s what popular music has in it most of the time. But I personally prefer instrument for a very good reason. Pop music with lyrics tends to lack in complexity (generally speaking) and rather focusing on original patterns and interesting melodies they tend to rely on a nice riff and a simple melody.
Poetry can also be conveyed through music, so I often feel that music with lyrics should get an extra hug ^_^ However, when most of those lyrics are ‘I miss you baby’ and etc. my appreciation of them drops significantly.
So, which do you prefer? Instrumental, lyrical, or a good mix of the two?

It really depends what I'm in the mood for. I personally definitely like music with lyrics more than just instrumentals, but there are still some really good instrumental pieces, whether it be classical, jazz, or electronic. I think just the voice alone adds so much more depth to the music (at least the music I listen to), unless the lyrics are shallow and repetitive and otherwise mainstream... Even in my OSTs, with the exception of a very few songs, I will generally listen to the songs with some kind of vocals in it, like in the Elfen Lied OST I like Lillium the best and in the Noein OST I like Shangri-La the best.
I have to agree that when mainstream lyrics are repetitive, then I end up not liking the song so much. Hence why I listen to Jpop instead. :)

Music with lyrics is my personal favorite over the instrumental, but it really all depends, like mentioned in the post above. If I'm in the mood for singing or something, instrumental's chosen over the lyrical for me. Usually though, I like it with lyrics, the way it originally is and all (but I do listen to instrumental from time to time since lyrical can get way too repetitive at times for some songs). Yep~
In some way, some genres do really need the lyrics.
Just take a look at the tracks of really good artists like Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Abba (yeah, shoot me, I like to listen to Abba), The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, etc. Most of their tracks wouldn't have had any impact without the lyrics provided by the singer.
Can someone imagine Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, Black or White, Thriller, Beat It or etc. without their really awesome lyrics? Let me tell you not all the pop artists tend to sing about love or stuff. In fact, Michael's Stranger in Moscow is a song that, while not as known as any other of his most famous tracks, tries to say the opinion of someone about the political / social / economic situation of a country.
I'll explain later why there are also other genres that can supress the lyrics and still sound great.

I like them both, depends on my mood. I bought a cd a couple years ago by Sigur Ros(if I remember correctly) and its mostly instrumental, very light and is great when I've had a hectic day and need something soothing to the soul. Then again some good rock music soothes me when I'm irritable, I get to sing along and vent some frustration and feel like someone understands how I'm feeling. Well, I sing if theres no one in a 50 foot radius, I should say! Sometimes the melody itself can reach a depth lyrics can't obtain while other times, the words are what reaches out to me.
I like both, but majority of my songs are instrumentals.
It depends to my mood. if I'm in a relaxed condition, I'd like to listen for the instrumental music. But it can be the opposite if I'm in a full-blast condition. if I were in that condition, I'd like to listen to rap or hip hop music, in my car audio system with the highest volume.
It'll feel like a storm is blowing inside my car.
But for this time, I prefer instrumental music to the ones with lyrics.

Well i could say that i don't like instrumental music. I just can't get into it (and i have tried). I like lyrics, to me they give meaning (sp?) to songs.
+ i love to have something to sing along to.

I think I prefer a mix of both, but it depends of the music style. I like them both, but some songs just don't need lyrics and would be beter without them. I think that a good example are some death metal songs. They give more attention to the instrumental part, so some of the songs just don't need lyrics, and when they have one, they become strange and confusing.
I actually get more attention to the instrumental part, but I like lyrics as well.
A lot of post-rock is purely instrumental which is one genre i like to listen to. but there's a time for one or the other. depends really.
I like instrumental better. Instrumental music can often convey more complex feeling than lyrical one (even it have been helped with the lyric).

It depends of the mood...sometimes I just want instrumental..It tends to happen when I'm in a relax mood..
I like instruments to not overpower the vocals in a lyrical piece. Overdone synths are kinda gross :/ I, however, do love instrumentals just as much, if not more. From trance to classical, it's all ear-candy to me. I try not to discriminate or differentiate too much between what I like and what I don't because I like whatever sounds good. Even if it's Hillary Duff. If the composition and the melody is right, it's right...right?
I find instrumental musics more relaxing than most vocals, excluding Enya of course haha. Usually at the start of the day, to shake up the remnants of sleep from my brain, I'd listen to vocals, not the heavy rock kind. I'm not a fan of those, somehow all that loud noises just don't sit well with me. Call me outdated if you want but I haven't been following the music scene very closely ;). Heck i'm still listening to 90's boyband music.
At night before sleeping or when I'm studying, I'd listen to quiet instrumental music, which would not distract my concentration. Classical ones are nice, but even anime music can work wonders for me.

I prefer lyrical of course. cause instrumental tends to get boring if you listen to it for a long period of time. but instrumental does play a major part in lyrical music. i listen to instrumental music only if its really good.
