I want to keep it simple. but yet I feel it needs some improvement. So I am open to ideas.

Oke that isnt bad, needs only some good improvement
the image on the left isnt bad, the swordsarm just needs some adjusting cous its abit grunged cous of the gradient/border in the center of the wall
the image on the right is bad, i suggest you replace it with a scan ore a better quality image. mostly the hair has some weard parts in it and the girl seems to have a bit of outer glow on her
the font willl have to be totally different for a easy and simple wallpaper, this one doesnt fit the wallpaper and is way to strange and bizar to fit to it..
try to fix that, good luck on fixing

Composition is ok, but two images + a gradient + some text will not make submission. The extraction of the characters is pretty bad - you can see the jagged yellow outlines on Kenshin at the left clearly. My advice - place Kaoru and Kenshin at the right in an environment, and fade gradually to the large Kenshin image. You wanted to keep it elementary, I understand, but you can still create a simple wall using complex elements like patterns, soothing landscapes, or well-incorporated text.

The scan looks reall bad, quality and extraction. try bigger scan for better quality. the diffuse gradient in the bg looks bad, and the font is too unfitting here.
