The End of Evangelion
2 years 5 months ago
I was fortunate(or unfortunate enough, depending on how you look at it), enough to purchase the end of evangelion movie. The two most prevalent emotions I had while watching this movie were, "damn this is good" in regards to the animation, and "WTF IS THIS" in regards to most of the movie, especially most of the latter part, which resembled a hippie on one freakin incredible acid trip!! Honest to god, what was Anno thinking when he made this movie? I have my thoughts on certain parts of the movie, such as why Shinji tries to choke the life out of Asuka at the end of the movie, and the belief that I heard during the commentary, about the Asuka we see at the end of the movie consisting of Rei, Asuka and Misato, but I want to hear what others think of this movie.

I didn't like Asuka....
so Shinji's choice of starting a new world (genesis) with Asuka pissed me a little!
but this one looks like the best way to end NGE......
poor Kajii!!!

I've seen most of the episodes and both the movies, i must say its really hard to understand, sometime i really dont' understand it, but you have to watch i more than once to take everything in...can't really remember if end of evangelion is before or after death and rebirth! but there are all these little clues and stuff around if you paying attention! but i liked it a lot! i thought it was odd, how rei didn't live instead, i like her better! but after you get it, its like.."oh i get it now.." i liked it a lot!!

I have seen episodes and then the movie. It was one of the first anime I sam and it shocked me. It was really something! I don't know if I would like it so much right now, but then it was amazing.
In my opinion Evangelion is one of the verry best anime. And manga is also great.

EoE is really cruel to all fans, you know, slaughtering away all the chars and so on ... but they wanted it, they wanted action because the original ending was very intellectual so they got what they deserved.
Sure - EoE is spectacular and i have the DVD but i woudn't say it's better than the original ending.

I agree with Anarchy, i think the 1st ending is good enough really even though its hard to understand but then again EoE is leet as well on some points ^_^;;

I actualy saw EoE last night for the first time
It was truely an awesome movie... I was expecting very little by what I heard people say... that it's extremely boring, and uncomprehensable... well indeed, it might not be the easiest movie to fully understand, but I would gladly watch it five times in a row
Also contrasting with what I've heard, I actualy liked the end... ALOT, even if I don't really know for sure how it did end =P

I think that both endings are suppose to parallel each other. Personally, I liked the movie in that it kind of provided a "meanwhile, in the real world" perspective of the original ending. Sure, the ending is not all happy, like we're all used to, but I appreciate the fact that there was no "deus ex machina" cop-out ending; when the idea that Shinji could bring back the individual's existence was introduced, he and the audience recieve a rude awakening when they see what that idea actually entailed, meaning the "others" will have to return through him and asuka, seeing as how everyone else were kind of already gone.
I think the series' storyline is pretty interesting, but the ending was really confusing! at first things were understood and the explaination about reality and dreams were good. but later when everything becomes complex it got so confusing. i didn't really like the ending but the series was still good. i have to admit that did get me really annoyed when i didn't undestand what they were trying to show....^_^
To be honest I don't get ending at all. Mayby I'am too stupid to this kind of stuff. Evangelion series was awsome but ending Disturbed my way of thinking
Hummm... I've been reading a few threads on different communities and there does seem to be a lot of confusion surrounding the endings of both the series and the movies. I didn't have that problem because I read the thesis-like-length article on a hard core NGE fans site that covered nearly every angle and possible meaning of both the directors actions and the characters meaningful and ending words. I wouldn't recommend that anyone else read it even if I could remember where it was because it was quite in-depth.
The whole series of NGE represented many layers of possible meanings and intepretations, and the ending of the series and EoE were only two of the ways that the NGE series could have ended.
The series ending was heavily influenced by the emotional state of the director at the time it was created and apparently (because I don't know, wasn't there and have never met him :) ) according to a lot of sources he was very depressed and maybe even suicidal. So as a result the ending was highly open to interpretation and was slightly dark and depressing in nature.
In the movies' case Gainex were induced by fan activity to produce a sequal or movie to provide an alternate ending to NGE. Perhaps the somewhat twisted ending was due to both Gainex and Anno were slightly reluctant to produce a sequal and on produced this alternate way of ending NGE because of a slight grudge on being pushed into it by the fan base.
Well in the end who really knows what went through their minds. But most otaku admit that the movie was slightly easier to attach a surface meaning to then the series end so watchers un-interested in further contemplations found it easier to watch and understand.
If there are questions on the movie/series end maybe a visit to a NGE fan site could answer your question (plus many, many, many more).

I only watched the first ending but all I have to say was... I WAS YOUNG AND IT DISTURBED ME LIKE CRAZY! IT was just FREAKY! but... Evangelion was a really really really goood series and I loved it even though some parts I had no idea what was going on... especially the time when Shinji was in the hospital tending Asuka and... and... he did something really inappropiate... sorry I was young back then!

i say that the movie was very fulfilling. though i would not exactly say that that was the last of the story. actually, the last of it was the last episode of the tv series (which would make more sense if you did watch it in that fashion...)
