Anyone here hate dubbing as much as me? I hate it with a passion ><!--emo&:(--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> . Not only does dubbing give it a fake-ish feel to the show, very often, dialogues are edited because they feel that it's <i>not appropriate</i> for the general audience.

For instance, I watch Cardcaptor Sakura and loved the anime series. But it disguested me so much when they showed the american dubbed version. The voices changed (My poor Iwao Junko! ToT ) and so much of the anime got cut off along the way as well.

I stand <i><b>against</b></i> dubbing even if it's a newbie to anime. I'd definitely recommend subs over dubs. Besides, people always read the subs anyway.

Want proof? If you watch a tv show or movie that's in English and has english subs, do you read the subs and watch or just plainly listen and ignore the text there?

At least in subbing, the original voices and intention of the dialogue is still there and at most, the subs give a wrong definition - someone can still give a more accurate translation if he/she knows the other language. It's still better than dubbing since it changes the dialogues so often due to the differences in japanese and english (not everything can be translated to easily)

Dubbings sucks! In Spain the anime dubbing are so bad, they are the same dubbers for all the series :S, but the Spain dubbers of americans films are considerated the best dubbers on the world ¬¬

I'm not very fond of dubbing, some of them are ok, but a lot of them are so bad. i can listen to japanese and understand most of it,but i need to go back to listen to it again and again on what they're saying, so i perfer them raw or subbed

I am totally against dubbing as well. I've grown up with the Japanese language so it seems very natural to me. English dubs just sound totally weird. However, one must admit, a small number of dubs actually try to be natural and smooth. (Namely Trigun and Cowboy Bebop).

Should also remember if there was no dubbing there probably wouldn't be as much great anime series out now

Bah, yet another dub vs sub debate. I'm going to go against the stream here and say I LOVE dubbs. I dont speak Japanese and my brain has to work alot harder to read the subtitles. I put up with them because its a privilege for me to view Japanese Region 2 shows but that does not mean when they come to the U.S. I want to keep reading subs. For the most part now, I believe most Reg 1s have a fairly good dubb. Want some examples -- IMO, the KG dub is really really well done, the Fruits Baskets Dub is simply super, the SuperGals Dub is fantastic, Ai Yori Aoishi is just as touching in English as it is in Japanese.

Oh, and tell me you dont think Hellsing is better with British accents than Japanese ones? I can go on and on about outright excellent dubbs. Thats not to say all Reg dubbs are good, but who's to say all the Japanese VAs are perfect either? Unless you speak Japanese, are you really gonna know that the VA was supposed to say something with the right tone there? Puhleeszze..

So, thats my piece. I'd rather save the brain cells (I really dont have that many to spare ya know?) and watch Reg 1s. If I want to see a sneak peak -- like the really super Aishterize Baby and Koi Kaze, then yeah, I'll watch the sub. I dont take things for granted so, I'm glad I just got a chance to see these new shows.. for that, I'll burn a few brain cells.

I'm neither pro sub nor pro dub - I like both. Sometimes there's no choice, such as watching anime on most TV stations (dub) or fansubs (subs). But, I figure if I buy a DVD, I might as well get my money's worth - dub, sub, extras and all. I like to hear how different voice actors perform and interpret their character. The way I see it, anime characters are paint on acetate (or pixels in a computer nowadays) whether in English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Cantonese, whatever, and have no inherent voice. (I won't use this argument on live action DVDs, although I sometimes watch those dubbed in other languages for kicks.) This isn't to say I like all dubs, but I like to watch them to see how they sound. Usually I'll end up liking certain voices in English and certain voices in Japanese.

-English dubbing SUCKZ like hell. US guys simply don't get the feeling of the characters. Almost wanted to kill the gal that dubbed Aoi in AYA R1.

-Mexican dubbing RULES :bounce: try to look at one Ranma 1/2, CCS or Inu Yasha episode in mexican spanish and you'll love it! To say the truth, I consider mexican dubbing better than chilean, spanish and etc...

I have to say some dubs just simply rock. FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, and even Inuyasha aren't bad at all compared to terrors like "American" Sailor Moon.
But, even so I have to say that I don't enjoy series as much as when they have the original voices.

The only time that I am annoyed by both is when either the dubbed or subbed context is really messed up to make it sound totally irrelevant to what's going on. I've experienced both. ;_;

Im very against dubbing....english dubs ive seen just basically rape anime of their purity.

Most of the time I am against dubbing, except in the cases of Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door. Those had good dubbing.

But I prefer subbing most of the time because if the voice acting is done the way that it was intended, or so I tell myself, and if it is bad voice action, I wouldn't know =P

I'm against dubbing but Tal's right. some people became anime fans after watching a dubbed series.(not all but some) yeah, I only watch dubbed anime if it's well dubbed. The last dubbed series i saw was Kiddy Grade. the american dubbing didn't sound right. (after watching the japanese ver.) The opening was simply translated into english and sung, the same with the ending.;_; Still, there are still some well dubbed anime out there. (can't think of any titles out there right now.)

What I find occasionally, (depending on dubbing companies) is that the language becomes "americanized". This sometimes works out, but usually it comes out weird. The role of the priest in Mononoke Hime, voiced by Billy Bob Thornton just sucked. Where does a fuedal era priest (one of the most educated people of the time) learn how to drawl and use cowboy slang? Also lost is the emotion and timbre that is in the original Japanese, like the roughness of Inuyasha's voice, which is a large part of his personality. In the dubbed version, he sounds like a whiny brat, not a gruff easily angered teen. Another thing that bothers me is that the english speaking voice "actors" sound exactly the same for every role, so when I hear Kagome speak, i visualize- "Sailor Venus"! In Kiddy grade, Lumiere is the more mature one of the group, but she sounds like a whiny child. I can understand how this could come to be though, since these voice actors probably weren't given character profiles before recording their parts.

However, dubs do introduce non japanese speaking audience to anime, and encourage them to look for other animes, maybe even subbed ones. So it basically has its good and bad sides. I will remain one who prefers subbed animes or even non subbed animes over subbed ones. Now I only wish that the next anime to be dubbed has someone who researched and properly cast the voice parts, instead of merely casting a "famous" star for the part in a bid to tempt the audience.
That's only my opnion.

Mostly I'm against dubbing. Since usually dubbing makes the show much more. I don't mind german dubbing (if they dub from the japanese version and not american version), because seriously, they dubbed americanized Yuugiou.
If someone watched Yugioh and Yuugiou, i'd suggest watching the latter.
Ahem, cutting out Y-Malik's completely evil phrases, actions and everything, that is serisouly not menat for general audience, Bakura eating raw meat.
At least german dubbing of the americanized version has nice voices. -=sighs=- One plus. But hey, how come in American version it takes place in America, when in the Doom series, they go to America to Pegasus. And how come Honda brought souvenirs form Japan, to show americans how the japanese live. THe american did it like this: Domino is in America. During Doom series Yugi-tachi went to Japan. How do you explain Los Angeles.
Generally I prefer subs over dubs. Firstly, you don't get annoyed by the fake dub voices, second if you know japanese you can understand it.
Of course, I like german dubbing on VIVA Tv, at least I don't think they cut out anything there. Hellsing is still bloody, and Noir actually kills. Yup, that is a german dub of japanese version.

Anyways...I'm all for subs, or good german dubs of japanese versions. ^^

I'm too used to subs / captions, i even watch my tv with captions because I'm soo lazy. Though i have to say that some dubs aren't that bad and shouldn't be damned to hell like eva subs which were fair and i currently prefer over the jap because I'm more used to it. And Dubs also provide some comedic relief!
