I feel that sex scenes are almost always necessary to a movie. If the film is a B-movie thriller or horror movie, like Snakes on a Plane or Basic Instinct, the sex scenes are generally expected; without them you'd just have the violence and the language, and you really need to include the sex in there to attract people to the movie. In some other movie types, such as romances and dramas, sex scenes aren't always included, but when they are it is usually to enhance the plot to some degree, either to demonstrate some relationship between two people or provide some basis for further plot developments. Anyway, the real reason sex scenes need to be in films is that without them, why would anyone want to watch a movie?
