Game music.

I agree music makes a huge difference to a game, but its not something I guess I take that much notice of. I was playing Obliviobn again today and that certainly has great music. And of course Ocarina of Time!
Good music (like good voice-acting) in a game really does add an awful lot to the overall experience IMHO, and it's hard for me to fathom that some really don't pay much -- if any -- attention to it. Particularly given that so many of today's games, from Adventure to RPG, go so far as to feature full on symphonic orchestra's (and often highly acclaimed ones at that) in their scores. A dramatic scene is often made that much bett[er] by appropriate music in the background reinforcing the visuals on the screen, to a different primary sense all-together. In other words, I think it's a vital part of the overall experience.
Some of my favorite scores include those found in: Xenosaga, Xenogears, Dragon Quest, Lunar, Fire Emblem, Shadow Hearts, etc. and while I'm a relative novice to the Final Fantasy series (believe it or not), I'm very impressed by what I've heard so far there as well. I've not yet played it, but a game like Eternal Sonata takes the concept of in-game music -- and music appreciation -- to a whole new level where games are concerned and by all indications it seems like they hit it out of the park. Can't wait to give it a try.

Some of the best music out there is Square Soft music. Even as far back as Final Fantasy 4, they had classic music. The prologue theme, the Red Wings theme, everything was great. Final Fantasy 5 had the battle with Gilgamesh, and Final Fantasy 6 had its own selection of great music too.
The Chrono series stands out as well. Chrono Trigger had many very memorable songs, and the score for Chrono Cross was incredible as well. Even new Square Games, while not as good as their old stuff, have top of the line music.

You can find good music as well as bad one.
Obviously its better when the music gets you into the mood like Guilty Gear (headbang!) or FFX (I liked the bosses battles theme). Even synthesized ones can be really catchy like Atelier Iris battle or Ys AoN.
I particularly really like Yuki Kajiura (Xenosaga) although I know more of her in anime OSTs (Noir, .hack//SING, MADLAX, Mai Otome)

I've always loved music no matter where it appears and thats no different in real life then it is for everything else in my book. some games really stand above on the epic scale i mean the soundtracks to the elder scrolls games are just..breathtaking some of the best scores i've ever heard come from fantasy based games.. then there's the metal and midi sounding stuff like old school platformer game boss fights. I have to say though since i'm a big metal fan (even though i like almost any other type of music) the guilty gear soundtrack has to be one of the best fighting game soundtracks there is. and it really gets you pumped when you play, honestly!
Totally agrees with Cdankutsuou. Yuki Kajiura is an excelent music composer and she did works like the music of Xenogears for videogames and OSTs for anime like .Hack Sign, .hack Liminality , .hack Dusk, Madlax, Noir and the recent Tsubasa reservoir Chronicles...I think she worked to in the soundtrack of Mai Hime and Mai otome series too.
And for videogames I always enjoyed Nobuo Uematsu and his breathtaking music for Final Fantasy series and now with works like Blue Dragon and Lost Oddisey.
I also enjoy Yoko Shimomura works with Kingdom Hearts series, Legend of Mana for Playstation 1, the Parasite Eve series and ( I investigated a little) with the soundtrack of the mitic Street fighter 2 XDD.
I think there are a lot of genious composers in the videogames universe, like Motoi Sakuraba with Valkirie profile series sountrack, Star Ocean series music and more recently with the Eternal Sonata score.
And another example was Michiko Naruke, the women composer of Wild Arms music that made an excelent job with Wild Arms 1 introduction and the rest of the sountrack, that was a master piece.
And for fighting games I think the best I ever heared was Guilty Gear X sountrack, rock and roll babies XDDD

Final fantasy x,x-2,XII, they have great music, and both kingdom hearts and kingdom hearts 2 and final mix have great music too, there are other games besides the square enix games, i like the music from the Persona 3 game its really good, maybe devil may cry, dirge of cerberus, yea i like a lot of music from games..
To me, game music means a lot. If the music doesn't buy me in, I can't enjoy the game. It's been that way for so long, it the game doesn't have that many notable themes, I probably won't get into it and find the game very boring. Weird but I've noticed that's how things work with me. I listen to more game music than actual songs from artists and bands.
ACtually I got the music from BF 2142, I personally enjoy really much the theme song of the opening sequence, also have lots of tracks from C&C, the themes from AoE II and i and the ending theme of TFT, yeah, the song's name is "The Power of The Horde"
Square Enix themes and soundtracks for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are pretty amazing and addicting as well. They fit perfectly to the setting of the game and rhyme to its theme. Almost their theme song have been and still famous and hard to ignore. They have been expert about these cause they tend to win the favor of their fans.
Another game music that are excessively addictive and really really encouraging to hear during play time are the base-deep rock music of Guilty Gear-- ever since from the first installment up to the latest release. You can never get enough of their tracks that suits the atmosphere of the game. How i'd wish they put up a mega-speaker beside the arcade machine so all can hear the trip of the game.

I agree with what most everyone said, music effects gameplay a lot. What's interesting is that lack of music can also have just a profound impact on gameplay too. In Shadow of the Colossus, the background music only plays when you're fighting a Colossus. The whole time you're exploring the world and traveling to the next Colossus you can only hear the sounds of nature while there are no special effect sounds or background music at all, and I think that helps the player to understand what a huge empty place the land in SotC is and helps set the enviroment to something very unique and otherwordly.
*Also want to put in my favorite game soundtracks are from SotC, Chrono Cross, Okami, and KH1 and 2! ^^

Games and Video games go together like people and their fascination with car crashes ...........It never gets old!
good music is needed for sports games...
I mean every game should have music... or at least like the xbox 360 you can play your own music so you don't have to listen to the games with crappy music!
