What are poeples opinions of Dells (laptop)
I am asking b/c for about 6 years I had a Toshiba that served well and never gave me a problem all those years but alas, now I have to buy a new one b/c it is showing signs of struggle to start.
I was thinking about buying a Dell but I seem to hear mixed msgs on this. Some people says Dells are good with customer service which makes them good. Meanwhile some have said they have good customer service bc they are made terribly well and things are prone to stop working. Yet then I am told that the are good b/c if something does stop working on laptop, you can send it to them and they will fix mistake.
The fact of the matter is I want a reliable laptop that I dont need to worry about constantly backing up the HD and shipping out my laptop with all my personal files, to Dell. I want to avoid that if at all possible.
What are your opinions? What are the good laptops out there?

I had a dell laptop... still do actually. I've busted it so many times, fried 3 video cards, broke 2 screens, half of them not under warranty; however each time I sent it back, tech checked the fix under warranty and I didn't have to pay anything.
In my opinion their laptops are much better than any other system as far as it goes for gaming (Alienware is another good company for gaming), plus they don't skimp on hardware and give you onboard generic like most companies do (ie. Sony, who use cheap hardware and charge double for it). Tech support however is like flipping a coin, they use to be the best; before they started to outsource. But in the end you'll always get your problem fixed, sometimes it may take longer than usual (phone support); but over all, I still use dell (currently have dell desktop).

Just like everything else, you get what you pay for. If you grab Dell's $600 special laptop, then its probably gonna be complete and utter crap, but if you buy one of the higher-end, nicer models, it will probably last much longer for you.
If you're willing to try Mac OS, Apple is a known star in the laptop world. They're thin, light, sleek, and tough. If you're going to buy a nicer laptop, definitely take a look at Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro lines.

I don't actually own a Dell laptop but a friend of mine has one. When he first got it, it was the only laptop in our group so when we made projects, he usually brings it along and the laptop runs nonstop for about 12 hours! How's that for durability. We never encountered any problem when we are working on it, it does not even hang even if we play games on it.
It has been three years but his Dell laptop only broke twice. It wasn't the hardware that had the problem, it was the OS. The parts are very reliable as I have seen it. If you are buying a new laptop, you can consider Dell. The customer support is good as well.

Since I've owned 2 business models they have been very good to me, I've abused them like hell but the build grade from a home a business model makes a huge difference.
I honestly can't recommend Dell Laptops. The company I work for used to buy them, and out of the 8 or so we've purchased, only ONE still works and only without a battery plugged in. It used to be that Dell was a good manufacturer for laptops but those days seem to be gone. I've seen this trend in the business meetings where all you used to see was Dell, but now you see everything BUT Dell.
If you do get a Dell, do not get an Inspiron. As Indigo says, you get what you pay for. The Latitude is a far better product. I've had good luck with IBM (Lenovo) Think Pads provided you don't get the low end ones. I'm on my second iBook and both of them are still rock solid. My first one has been in service for a LONG time, and when I decided to upgrade after a few years I gave it to my woman. She's still using it.
I'd say the only laptop manufacturer that focuses on reliability is the Panasonic ToughBook. They're pricy though.

I dont personaly like them, they are expensive and the specs dont justify the price, i like getting pcs from Gen-x-pc or cyberpower or something...theres are lots of companys that specialize in customizing pcs just like Dell, but you can find em better than dell, for cheaper price.....just fish around some more before you choose a dell...
Wow expensive? That's the first I have ever heard of Dell being expensive. Usually Dell deals are REALLY hard to beat. I owned a dell, and it was good, but the HD was broken and they wouldn't send me a new one so I returned the whole thing. They sent me a refurbished HD, but I don't trust refurb HDs.
My friend has a high model dell and its fine. He also bought one for his mom, which gets like 10 hrs of battery life with the extended battery.
Honestly, I would just get a dell because of the price.

I personaly don´t like Dells my office had them and they always broke up, customer support is good but I prefer something that rarly breaks up thats something that is likley to fail even if the support is good (sending things, waiting for support and al that is just to much waisted time), I think the HP laps are better I have a LA2415 and use it 12-15 hs a day and it hasent given me any trouble yet (1.5 years and going) im actualy thinkng of getting a DV-8000 model but in my country its kinda pricey

I'd personally never buy a dell desktop computer, but their laptops are consider the best of the tier 1 computer companies. Stay away from their over priced XPS notebooks and you'll be fine. Their customer support can range from ok, to downright lousy. If money is not a concern, then go with Sager notebooks. Alienware and dell (dellienware since dell bought alien out) reassemble sager notebooks with their logos on it. In essence, they are just reselling sager laptops. VelocityMicro is quickly becoming a major seller of high-end computers, but their lineup is focused more on desktops, but they offer some mobile solutions.
I own a Mayhem G3 Eclipse XT from ABS, and this sucker runs great.
I heard Dell's batteries fry and don't last very long (but that was probably before the crisis). My father wanted me to get a Dell when I told him my HP was not working properly. I ignored his suggestion and got a Sony instead. I've had it for three months and so far, not a problem.

Dell have about 40%++ of the laptop market.
I recomend Dell, nice support, and you have the choice to select the components of your LAP to fits your needs.
The warranty for 3 years is a little expensive, but it's acceptable.

For yours and everyone elses sake, don't by a dell >_>. Honestly, Dell, in terms of being stupid has hit that point in terms of choosing AMD over intel now even though Intel has better processors for your money at the moment. Mmmm the only thing I like about dell is the fact they allow some manner of customization but frankly, i'd stay away from dells. In all honesty, I have no clue where to get some good laptops these days considering the fact you want to have a 'long term' laptop. At the pace technology is moving, if you buy one now 1 or 2 years from now your laptop will become ' obselete'. In terms of quality and stuff, i dont trust Best Buy or Future Shop. If you want something that will last i would recommend just custom making your own laptop so you can tailor it to your needs and price.
