900 huh? i guess thats why xbox is better.

There you go, here's the article straight from gamespot.com and from many Sony "insiders."
If Sony keep falling in the stock market, the ps3, if released when it should be, should be costing up around $900 for the full package.
Guys....what do you think? Anyone still going to get it at the beginning?
I'd have to say my love from video games has spanned for 15+ years. But $900...I don't know. That's a tad bit too crazy.
I don't know how many times I have to explain this but $900 is the MANUFACTURING COST NOT THE RETAIL COST. Manufacturing costs are completely different from retail costs sheesh! I'm surprised how little people know about the world they live in, Sigh. Dammit I'm just a student (in my third year of engineering) but it still amazes me how much people don't not know jack about how the world opperates even just a little. Anyways I digress, now Merrill Lynch has restated that they made a calculation error and that the actual MANUFACTURING cost will be $800. But that aside note the Merrill Lynch is only speculating based on the resources they have available. They do not know how exactly Sony will manufacture the PS3. And if you want a retail price expect Sony to take a $200 loss per system so about $600 per console (it'll take a $300 loss if the company's analysts determine that the consumer's willingness to pay (WTP) is lower, although a $300 loss is a little unheard of). Oh yeah, normally manufacturing costs are about three times lower than the retail cost, yes so about everything you've bought at the store was made at a considerably smaller price. But in the first year of release for a new product it's not unheard of that company's will take a intial loss per product to ensure that they sell. For instance, Microsoft is taking about a $150 loss per Xbox360 console. But of course companies hopefully make up for the losses in subsequent years do to good sales. I'm not a business major but this is just some things that they discuss and calculate in development. And of course companies have already calculated how long it'll take for them to break even.
Putting all of that aside, I don't care what it costs I want a PS3, I just got to save up for it since each new console is always a hefty investment.

Just for comaprison, anyone know the manufacturing cost of Xbox360? I'd be curious to see what that is.

Well if you look at what ~zanmato666 says, he says that Microsoft is taking about $150 loss per X-Box 360, so the manufacturing costs of an X-Box 360 Premium are around ($400 plus $150) $550 at the moment.

Wikipedia to the rescue:
BusinessWeek magazine compiled a report which estimates that the total cost of all of the components in the "premium" bundle is $525 USD, aside from additional manufacturing costs, meaning that Microsoft is losing at least $126 on every Xbox 360 system sold in the US, and at least as much in Japan.

900 for production costs. they would have to drop at least 400 to compete with microsoft.
and with ethir stocks going down, and unable to pull money in that way, they won't be able to drop it that low.
game console producers make their money on the 3rd party stuff and games since htey have to pay royalties to produce anything sony. but even accesories and roaylty fees can't make up for a $400 loss in profit.
either sony will be waiting a while to release the PS3, or they'll be forced to release it high priced, which would be suicide.
while every game company takes a loss, it can easily be made up in the above said...royalties, accerosies, games. but 400...that would be impossible to recover from. think about it. for every 10 systems sony would produce, that would be a loss of $4,000. people in the US would pay 500 for it. so, we'll say they sell 10,000 units here. Thats a loss of 4 MILLION dollars. the number of games and accessories at launch would have to be massive for them to make that up.
i'll be really curious to see how this plays out : /
i think i'll just by my revolution and be happy with that xD

That can be, but Sony hasn't confirmed or revieled any information about his production costs, so it is possible that the production costs aren't as high as $900, the $900 thingy is just an speculation of Merrill Lynch.
I truly hope for Sony that it's production costs and selling costs aren't that high or the PS3 could be the last gameconsole from Sony. =(

I hope you are right cause the friend who told me this got the order from the big guys in gamestop. He told me it was a precaution just in case, but still if the guys from the main office is telling stores this it make you wonder though.diablo2189
game861I of course asked him why and he told me that the disk have some type of sercurity on it. Let say that I have 2 PS3's and I have one PS3 game and I put it in PS3 A and then I put the same disk in PS3 B and it doen't work. That what the sercurity is, if you in one PS3, it won't in any other PS3 except for the first you put the disk. I really hope that is not true.
That would be crazy. I've heard rumors like these before and I really doubt it's true. Not only will this deter people from buying the PS3, but it'll also drive away their own fans. I don't think any gaming company would be stupid enough to pull this off. This would mean we can no longer borrow games from our friends or rent games from Blockbuster. No one is that stupid to actually think we, the consumers, would go and buy a brand new copy of the game, just because we can't borrow or rent it.

900 dollars is not the final price for the ps3... but i think i would probably wait out until i get enough of my ps2 before i get a ps3. heard its going to go down to 300 after 3 years... lol i can wait that long... i think ;x
Good thing im getting a rev at 100 or 200+
I wonder how they are going to pull this off! Don't want them to go broke anytime soon =(
Well, PS2 had a similar prize when it came out, around 800$ here in Europe. So if people were prepared to pay that much for a PS2, then I'm sure that they are more then willing to pay 900$ for something new and kick ass.
Just for the record so that people are aware that the $900 is speculation and actually a miscalculated estimate at that the source of this figure comes from the following report:
Merrill Lynch Analysis
If you actually add the figures up in their estimates you'll find that it comes to $800. Unfortunantly the media and gullible readers have latched onto it as gospel. I severely doubt its accuracy... Sony isn't stupid enough to price the PS3 out of the reach of its intended demographic.

That's true. If people can and want to pay that much, then good for Sony. If it's an amazing product, then it could be worth it. Time will tell, I guess.
There's no way in hell it will cost greater then 500 dollars. no one is going to pay that just for a piece of gaming equipment, despite all it's other features.
