Ok this is not a list your favorite animes kinda post so dont turn it into one...
I just want what anime you think is winning the space race to reach uniqueness...
which anime pushes the boundries and is trying fresh new ideas..
were this 4 years ago, id say flcl was that anime, but nowadays most anime's resemble flcl in some way so thats no longer the case...

Something recent and different (in a good way) that I've been watching is Mushishi. It has some sort of subtle ethereal fairytale/legend feeling to it that I haven't seen in many anime.
Ill have to check that out,..
I heard this Count of Montecristo anime exists thats pretty insane
can anyone verify this?

Oh you're talking about gankutsuou. Its awesome. Watch it.
It's well drawn and has a unique style to it. Also the story is well done (based mostly on the book) and while I haven't read the book I think the liberties they take with the story are done well in the futuristic paris the anime is set in.
Oh a crazy weird anime that might be somewhat similar to flcl that came out is the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya. Personally I think its a bit overrated, but I do like its uniqueness.

Depends on what innovation your talking about. Like best new art style, best blend of coumpter generated and animation, best manga adapton, best charecters, ect, ect. For now, I have high hopes for deathnote because the style is awesome, I like the story, the music is to "die for" (sorry for the pun I couldn't resist), and I have been satisfied with everything so far. FLCL was cool and it just blew my mind. Don't watch it when you have a suger rush or you just become ten times hyper. Gankutsuou looks awesome because of the fashion design and how they achived it, I'm halfway through and I need to finish it. Also, with innovation, you have to take into account when a show can keep the people to watch it for 52 eppisodes, buy all the music, buy the guides, buy the figures, and ultimatly buy the dvd's.
Ganketsou is definitely worth checking out. Personally I would reccomend Mushishi, simply because I have never come across an anime so well original. It's also very beautiful, the artwork is great and you can't help but love the main character. Each episode can count as a stand alone story really. I've finished it and I must say I was not dissappointed. You should definitely give this a try.
Well based on story I would have to say Death Note is the most innovative NEW anime out there that I've seen so far. I haven't seen an anime with such a interesting story as Death Note for some time now.
With this fall season there seems to be quite a few remakes of series (i.e. Kanon and Negima!?). While other series seem to play on the same plot point of either boy meets girl or vice-versa or some sort of superpowers saving the world. Although one anime I also seem to particularly like is D.Gray-man, so far I haven't seen an anime that bases itself on exorcism so to speak (although it reminds me much of Chrno Crusade but darker, literally, you have to turn off the lights just to watch it :P ).
Well this anime isn't very innovative but this genre or type isn't done very often. I'm talking about Lovedol ~Lovely Idol~. It's one of those pop-starish (or Idol) based animes that has much more music in it compared to other animes. So if you're into that J-pop type of music, this is the series to watch.
Yeah, Ganketsou was really unique in terms of art-style. A very good anime.
Mushishi? I've been hearing a lot about it but I really never decided to watch it. I'll be sure to add it to my plan to watch list.

I have to agree with Zanmato666 -- Death Note is definitely an unique, new anime worth checking into. It's becoming just as popular as it's manga counterpart.
Hmm. for animes that came out in 2006.. dont forget the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya!
of course the most glaringly obvious 'innovative' part is how all the episodes are shown out of order... at first glance i thought 'ugh great' but somehow.. it works. it's crazy but it actually works for the story.
and the story itself is...innovative as well. you have no idea what the anime is about until a few episodes in. at first it looks like a typical high school drama, or a comedy.. but little do you know it actually isnt any of those ... >_<
ive also heard a lot of good things about mushishi. somehow i cant really bring myself to watch another anime after seeing suzumiya though :PPP well either that or that it's about ... bugs :P

Well..for me ..it would be trinity blood...looks good anime for me...
Gankutsuou simply blows everyone else out of the water with its original art style, unusual characters and glorious settings. I've only seen the first four episodes, but from that point its all ready showing the incredible imagination put into it.
Also, I love Franz... But that's not the point.

Ergo Proxy, Haruhi and Higurashi for sure
Gankutsuou is not a conventional anime, I don't think it's even fair to compare it with others, it was clearly made to impress with different art styles and stuff, would be the same as comparing a title with Miyuki-chan in wonderland.
Death Note, beware, is the next TARD anime (as in narutard). Too much for nothing and it didn't even aired more than a couple of episodes. *runs away from the linch*

Welcome to nhk is pretty unique and awesome
I have to agree with ~zanmato666, the best new innovative anime this season would have to be Death note, its got blood, guns, shinigami, and best of all, a little black book that can kill people. If you like any of the these, I highly suggest you go watch it. The manga is already finished too.
If your into action based anime, then D. Gray Man is the way to go. The character designs are amazing and it follows the manga very closely, which is a definite plus in my books. Many people have also said that its close to FMA. But because D. Gray Man just started four weeks ago, its not really into the plot yet. But give it another 4 episodes and it will be a great anime to watch.
Pumpkin Scissors is alright, it deals with a post war country and the military fixing things up again. Its not what i would consider mind-blowing good, but its decent enough to check out.

Death Note of course! The animation is GREAT! The background music is good too.
D.Gray-Man is good too. The character design is unique and the Exorcist outfit is super cool!
