Well, that's a difficult question for me, because I have a slightly different deffinition for 'hero'. If you mean 'hero' as in, the American comic-book style hero, then it'll have to be Serena / Tsukino Usagi from Sailor Moon, because she's ready to sacrifice herself for her friends and for the world, she's strong and she's brave [...eventually, anyway].
But my personal anime hero is Kanbei from Samurai 7, because he's insanely strong [don't think there's anything that could bring him down unless he wants to], and he's got a good heart, no matter how much he'd like to seem aloof.

Lol dragon ball z isnt a great anime or anything, however goku is the quinessential hero.
For your american comic style hero my favourite is sasuke from Full metal Panic! Funny smart and is willing to sacrifice absolutely anything or anyone to get the job done.
My favourite tragic hero is Lucy from Elfen Lied as her story is so sad and she has to deal with so much pain and suffering and still manages to control herself occasionally :P.

Kinda a general question there... since the definition of "hero" does tend to be a bit shaky.
I tend to like types of characters... but if I had to choose a couple all-time favorites...
Male characters: for "Cool" we have Shannon Cassule from Scrapped Princess
For "awesome" we have Maes Hughes from Full Metal Alchemist
And for "Manipulative but still fun" we have a toss up between Vy Lowe (Scarface) from Shadow Skill, Urahara Kisuke from Bleach, and Roy Mustang, also from FMA
Females: well here's some I do like
Iria from Iria the Animation,
Suzumiya Haruhi from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
... Lafiel from Crest/Banner of the Stars
There are a lot more but I'd have difficulty choosing any as an overall favorite without a more specific question

-Amuro Ray
-Kira Yamato (Only in Seed, he suck at seed destiny)
-Al Eldric FMA
-Goku
-Vegeta (Anty-hero)
-Cloud (Last Exile)
-Kikuchiyo
-Hajime Saito.
-Kondo Isami
-Goldenboy
-Ray Steam
-Ashikata.
-Hakafu
I know that you probably mean just one hero, but there so many good characters in all of anime that is hard to pick just one. Hell, I even left out like 10 characters that I consider great heros.

I mean heroe like in an universal kind of way
not a comic book heroe, just someone who wills to sacrifice him or hersefl for the sake of others withouth getting nothing for his or her effort

I don't wanna tangle that long:
-Monkey D. Ruffy of One Piece: You look at Ruffy, and get to know his personaly. He's a very proud young Pirate Captain, very self-confident and determined with an Iron Will,... but simpleminded in the head,..... AND... he would do anything for his friends, no matter what dangers he would face. He would risk and self-sacrifize his life for ....Friends, no matter who they are. This Belief in "Friends" makes Ruffy overpower the toughest Opponents on the Grandline.
Kenshin Himura of Rurouni Kenshin: Kenshin, the main Character, and former Hito Kiri Battosai, swore to never kill a human again... but facing the ghosts of the past make it more than difficult to maintain that vow, thus protecting his friends. Realizing that he had to deal with the former self and with the shadows of the past,... he walked away from his friends in order not to endanger them and pull them into his past mess....
But nevertheless, Kenshin's friends have such strong feelings for him that they would follow Kenshin to Kyoto...
