This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

Well, as the title says here I want to ask how many gamers out there suffered those days when you were still noobs at a particular game and played on the net against other people? I used to be a noob at some games but not anymore, with time you improve and become better at it. However, during the times when I was a noob it was tough, cause noob games weren't too common and additionaly you had intermediate players entering noob games to pwn us all, they seemed to get a kick out of beating the shit out of noobs.

I also noticed how the term 'noob' is used as a way to insult a gamer, and it's one of the worst insults you can give them. Many times when I'm in pro games and a team member is playing bad due to a bad day or the opponent is simply better, they begin to call him 'noob', which the targeted gamer takes very seriously as an offense. It's happened once to me in a pro level game as well, the guys in it were just better than me, they probably were 'leet pros' xD

So it's interesting how when you're a noob, you actually protect yourself with that term by saying 'give me a break, I'm a noob' yet when you improve your level you must do all the possible to not be referred as a noob. Natural progression you say? Maybe.

So, have any of you had this sort of experience before? In any of the levels?

I hate the term 'noob'.

Quite possibly the dumbest way someone can describe someone who is new to a game. Anyone who first picks up that game, unless they have played a title similar to it or the title has had prequel games to it, will be a 'noob'. It's just the way it goes. I've had numerous years of experience with FPS games, but when I first started playing Team Fortress 2 online I sucked. Why? Because I was completely unfamiliar with the title itself, which by definition makes me a noob.

It's also the most common insult for when a player doesn't know something. If you don't know everything there is to know about the game, odds are you are going to be called a 'noob'. Hell, I played Diablo 2 for a few years and I get called a noob for not knowing all the rune words and what they do, or for not knowing a certain abbreviation.

I actually go after people who call others 'noobs'. Not only because is it a weak insult, but is it really necessary? We are all new at something at one point in time, so why is it necessary to point it out that he/she is new to that game or doesn't know everything that there is to know?

Well everyone have to start to be a Noob so i have to say i dont have anyproblems with them but if they are such noobs wich betray and use cheats so i hate them.
Amrod you are right erveyone who start as a noob will improve with the time but also there are people who dont get it how to improve.
I sa they are two different kinds of Noobs The one is the beginner and the Other is the N00b i think the beginner explain from itself he just startet the game and is not realy used to the game because Online the Games are different as in Mission Mode or other offline categories.
The N00b is someone who nows that he is a N00b he wants to win at any cost or if he knows that it is impossible so he will do everything tomake you feel bad if he had the possbilty he will even cheat.

I think it is impotant in games to now the difference between those two because it isnt fair to be mean to beginner just because he cant really play the game well

Hmm, I don't remember getting called a n00b too many times when I first started playing newly-bought games...maybe because the game was new or maybe because it was so long ago and insignificant I don't even remember. It doesn't necessarily apply to newbie players, it can simply be a complaint from another person that the way you're playing is the easy way out. An example would be to use a grenade launcher to kill people, other people are going to complain that the nade is a n00b weapon. Other ways can be to use a gun to kill a person carrying only a knife, you name it.

I really haven't been called a noob. I usually just play games offline. The only game that I've been playing online is Domo(Dream of Mirror Online) and I've been playing that for a while. I see some new people who need help on the game and help them out, but I usually do my own thing. Although In my opinion there is just two types of noobs, Newbs who are able to grow up and actually get better at the game and then there are noobs, who are people who are just jerks on the game.

What I love is how a noob is seen as new if you usually don't know the person, preferably MMOs, because at that point anyone you don't see very often can be considered a "Noob" I've been called a noob in MMOs where I'm very near the level cap but I don't know the jargon they use because they party up like a bunch pussies and don't solo like real men! j/k. Or on shooters (TF2 my main one now), I sometimes get called a noob by a sniper or pyro(usually one or the other) because I'm playing a class that's slow so I get my ass kicked by the back burner, or I get sniped by them because they have played the map to complete ridiculous mastery that they know they can shoot people coming down alley by peeking out of a crack that they found in the wall!
Sad fact with shooters is that a true new noob can still kick your ass if they have functioning motor skills.

Hm.. I have never recalled calling somebody a noob before. The only game I have ever played that involved pros/"noobs", was probably GunZ, where action is vey intense, and the slightest mistake is death. f people beat me, I suck it up, and try again. If I beat someone, then there is no difference. They are not as skilled, or I got them. The concept is simple: only the strongest survive, but just because you are weak, does not mean there is no hope for you. People have capacity for expansion, and therefore noobs will not remain noobs forever (unless they quit the game). Really, we call people noobs because we have built up a hating for their actions and most of the time, its because they bested you, and you're a sore loser. If you really are good enough, then whining just ruins it. If you really aren't, then go ahead and cry me the Pacific Ocean.

If you ever hear a person use this word, they most likly are into, or obsessed with PC games. I agree with Neko above, that this term has lost all of its original meaning and has become nothing more then a sarcastic remark that can be ignored where and whenever needed.
It is funny to watch the occasional person flip out and take this word seriously. Esspecially when the reciever of the term is hardcore at the game.
Yet at the same time its sad cause you know they just turn right around and say it to someone else all the time.

Anyone who has had this word said to them, has eventually said it to someone else to see what it feels like, or to be the one to actually say it instead.
Yes just about 99.9% of anyone who has heard the this word knows this to be true, no matter how much you may want to deny it.

I personally will only use the term these days to confirm if someone is new or at that beginner lvl for a game. Other then that, I don't use it anymore; but then again I was never to into the PC games...

I agree it has lost its meaning. i only call someone a noob when they do it to me first just as an insult without knowing what it really means. mostly i see people use it as a scare tactic to intimidate other players while gathering raw materials, mainly mining. its really pathetic to see a player use the term just to drive away another player so they can have a resource all to theirself. personally i have never liked this word even when someone really is new to a game and they use it to describe theirself. when a new player approaches me for help and they say something like "could you help me im a noob" or "sorry i dont know this, i know im a noob" i stop them right there and tell them they are not a noob they are just new. i offer them the help they need on the condition that they never use that word again. we could have a much richer gaming community if more players would stop being so damn immature and/or competitive. honestly, when did we stop having fun with video games? lately it seems like its all about being #1. its not like its going to matter in 20 years who had more gold or xp or kills.

Consider how a majority of the gaming community just has a natural sarcastic approach to noobs.
I really hate how everyone is so mean to the noobs.

I mean, give them a break.

Once I was at this DOTA match, and everyone starts cussing the new guy on how he can't play for peanuts
I know practice makes perfect and all, but if he is new, he is new, so he joined the wrong game, bet on the wrong server, what the f*ck does that give you advanced players who treat internet as serious business and gaming as seriously the path of life (the joke is on you), any damn right to be so mean to the new guy?

Used this term alot to the stupid players :) but most of them werent so sensitive about the game and in my country we dont rly get so obssessed when we call each other names so its all about if you let the nerd get in your head or if you try to ignore him

I've used it before but only for stupid people. There's a thin line between being an idiot and being a noob and most of the people I use it on cross that line... I don't really get called a noob too often because I listen to the more experienced players and learn the game so they don't tend to bitch too much. I realise that a lot of people who excessively use "noob" aren't too great at the game themselves. If i find a shitty player calling a shittier player a "noob" I would just go and rape them both to shut them up.

I find that the one game with the most trashing and flaming is DotA pubs. Most of the people who play pubs aren't that great when you compare them to some pro players but they still go on calling others noob as if they were "gods" at the game. It annoys me.

I don't lower myself to standards of calling someone 'lol noob' unless I feel like trolling someone to bits, which doesn't happen often because I realized the internet was just the internet in my early youth.

In the event that someone annoys me enough to calling me a n00b, hacker, wtf asshole, etc; I invoke the command /cg_teamchatsonly 1.

;)
