Soaps
First, I will say that I don't understand why people like soaps. I watch some and then feel cheated and bored over their cheesy romantic and tragic plots. Second, I will say that I am a male. Not saying that males don't watch soaps or enjoy them. But seemingly mostly females are enjoy soaps more than males.
My question. What is so great about soaps? What makes them so much more interesting than other action or mystery themed things? Why the heck are there so many of them?

Because you know there will be a "happy-end"?
Bacause many people watch them and that sells?
You watch anime don't you? Anime is just a soap with characters who are in their teens and have special powers. I don't like them either but I can see the similarties. I think some people enjoy soaps because they have simple storylines, characters come back from the dead after 20 years, and the cliffhangers hook the viewers to watch the next episode.
My mother watches soap operas. XD I think they're hilarious and its funny to see what happens next but I don't understand how people could take them so seriously. And they go on forever and ever until they get cancelled it just seems so strange to me that they never stop! Well, they're fun anyway.

Hey, I used to watch soap operas, and I'm a guy. And in case you haven't noticed, anime, dramas, manga, and even life, is just a huuuuuuuuge soap opera :P
Not quite sure myself...I suppose its all the drama and romance that keeps the woman folk hooked. Me, I dont like all that drama. I find it totally over the top. Though i would turn on the soaps when there are absoloutely nothing better on the telly. Like I ended up followed 'The Bold and the Beautiful' for three months because the hour on which it was on, there was usually nothing better on. So, I would end up watching it just to pass the time.
The only soap that I kinda half seriously followed was 'Fashion House'. I'm not too sure WHY I did though...I was severely dissapointed in the story (I ended up predicting every damn thing!). I think it was the whole fashion thing that interested me...
General Hospital is on here these days...I cant even stand its commercials *Groans*
My biggest peeve is that they just drag on and on and on and on. And no one stays dead. Its like real life Marvel verse really...

Anything that has a continuous storyline will attract viewers. Apply some drama and good looking characters and you have successful form of entertainment.
Whether it be Friends, MTV's real world, or anime; they all share some of the same characteristics which make them addicting.

My mom loves the Filipino soap operas (or telenovelas, as they call it). She is so obsessed with the popular FIlipino adaptation of Marimar, and even sings the theme song. She goes at great distances to watch the newest episodes that are on YouTube that she tells me to quit downloading my torrents. Christ, we need a few T1s, stat.
I like soap operas, but not as much as my mom and big sister do. I'm not going to feel like dying if I don't get Marian Rivera's autograph. But then again, I've heard stories of people who say they don't watch it, but end up doing so because other members of their family are. It's contagious.

It depends on the soap. There's some soaps for every person, depending on the plot and such. Some people connect with the characters and events and that makes it successful in their view. It all really comes down to who likes what, since all soaps aren't exactly the same.
Though to be successful in the industry, a soap has to survive, and to do that it needs to appeal to as large an audience as possible. To accomplish that, they'll mimic whatever is most popular. That's why a lot of the most popular soaps look the same.
Me, I'm not much of a soap person, though I do watch anime all the time. =P To me, anime > most shows on tv in general, but that's just my perspective. >_>

Yeah, but you forgot the part where soaps=WORST ACTORS EVER.
I can't stand soaps, and I'm female. They're ridiculously cheesy, predictable and they never end. I don't know how a person can actually sit through something like that, let alone enjoy it (without jamming a fork in their ears, that is).
I'd rather spend my time watching things explode and die. Personal preference, I guess.
Yupper scuppers, soaps are cheesier than cheetos... and that makes them worse than dangerously cheesey! XP
I wouldn't say it's fair to compare anime to soaps, though. Anime has a much broader scope of storytelling, imagination, genres, and world-feel. Soaps are primarily limited to relationships in a very small-scale world, usually hospitals or villas or what-have-you. There are anime series that have soap-elements in it, but it's not a defining feature of anime. And in any case, the acting in soaps is rather poor, the story's are pretty juvenile and take themselves way too seriously, and the direction/execution is pretty limited and unimaginative.
Of course that's with the soaps I grew up knowing. I think foreign soaps might actually be of a higher quality than the ones I've known. :P

Most people just love romantic stories. Some others love action, gore, horror, comedy and etc. It's just that different people love different things and it so happens that a lot more people love soaps enough to keep it going.
Well, everyone has their tastes. I don't like soaps at all, to me they're the general same plot line with deviations here and there just to make them 'interesting', but hey, I can't condemn the people that like that stuff xD It's up to them.
I watch em when I get the chance. They crack me up. For me, it's almost like a dark comedy. They always cover plot holes with amnesia, and someone is always either being kidnapped or coming back from the dead.
If you don't take them seriously, they're VERY entertaining.
One of the best things about them is that there is a new episode every day. There are NEVER reruns. It would be nice if all shows were like that :3

I hate and dislike Soaps so much that I don't want to talk about it!
