Soaps
My mother used to be big into soap opera's and I'll admit, I used to watch some of them. Still do, if there's nothing else on television. I don't see how people can take them so seriously, sort of like I can't see how people take Lifetime so seriously, but they do make for good time consumers. Also, as many people above me have pointed out, anime/manga are a little like soap operas; they just tend to have teens with super powers or giant mecha added in.
I've actually been an on and off soap fan for years xD;
I admit, some are incredibly cheesy and unrealistic, but some out there are actually pretty good.
I don't think the actors are all that bad (yes, some of them should have never been hired), it's just the scripts are sometimes overtly dramatic, the actor is forced to act that way.
But, it's mostly the romance and the awesomely cheesy stories that keeps me coming back every week.

I'm the same way. I'll stop watching one for two years, and within two weeks of watching, I'm pretty much up to speed on what I've missed. Thank goodness for recycled storylines.
They're just a nice mindless escape. I don't need all of my TV shows making me think. Kinda defeats the purpose of the TV.

Soaps... I think you're talking about soap operas. Well, soaps are fine but when the characters go crying over here and there and do stupid, irritating and annoying things, I don't like it anymore. Other than that, I don't really mind. Some anime are like soaps as well. That's true. But anime soaps aren't as irritating as real soaps.
I don't really know why but I guess why girls like soaps is... they're romantic? or maybe it's just that the story's more emotional than the stereotypical guy stories? I have no idea.

Well I've watched a couple of soapies in the past but I haven't as much since then. I've had my share of Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Live (LOL!! i watched the episodes where Marlayna becomes the devil haha that was hilarious!), Neighbours, Home and Away... At the moment i'm only watching Kath and Kim, haha mind you its really funny!
Most of time these days, however, are spent on series/dramas like Heroes and Ugly Betty! I must admit Heroes is the best show that i've seen so far. Plot excellent, juicy characters, uber powers... lol you name it! Ugly betty is more on the fun side though. I've also watched The OC which was pretty good until Marissa Cooper died. It just went downhill from there. Quite repetitive too.
Seinfeld? not sure what you consider that.. soap opera? but yeah i'm still watching that hahha I've got it on a DVD set even.

Because sopas comes from what's really happening in real life and people who filmed that just wanna share to others that some never seen problems can also be happened in real life. It's also serves as entertainment for others where a person ants to be entertained if she want to cry, laughed or anything all she needs to do is watched a soap.

I myself dislike most soaps I've seen (which have been few) simply because the acting is awful and the characters tend to be so messed up that I can't sympathize with them. In soap operas people seem to always make the wrong decision or do the dumbest thing they could do, I just find them depressing and annoying.
Even if its not realistic I'd rather have characters that I can look up to rather than ones so flawed that I am astounded again and again by their poor judgment.

I like only the funny ones, those thattakes out a smile or a big laugh, distract you from reallity for a while, some other times makes you cry and takeeout that feeling you have inside and wanted to cry and that's a very good excuse. I like them my husband does not LOL!

I don't like soap operas, but american ones are worst than any other soap opera of any other country, sorry lol. They try to imitate an style that they don't have. They are great at comedies, series, etc. but not soap operas. Anyway, I don't even like latinamerican ones... but maybe if you're bored you tend to watch and follow the story... it has something catchy I guess...
I used to watch soaps until it became boring and predictable because it seems they keep repeating the same thing again and again and some storylines are just stupid and boring. I guess some are good while some are not but I'm tired of the soaps in my country because it's really very predictable. -_- I don't understand why my aunt watches them but I guess it's better than seeing stupid shows that don't have a message.
