I'm an otaku hands down. I spend all my free time on a website and watch as many japanese anime shows as I can. I watch anime more than reality shows. So, yes I am most defiently an OTAKU.
I'm a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Otaku...
I usually get together with the Japanese exchange students at my college, and when we're writing Kanji, I wrote
陸上自衛隊 and the exchange students are like "How the hell do you know that?! Are you a government agent?!"
I'm sitting there like, "huh?"

Ryuu陸上自衛隊
huh? what does that mean? ok i dont think i'd call myself an otaku or be acknowledged as one. although i like certain animes & imitate their language, most of the times i just switch back to local slang or chinese because using japanese just doesnt have the same impact. anyway my chinese pronunciations are enough trouble for me & after i say anything in chinese others just burst out laughing so i guess i've got to control it first before i can progress to jap. plus collecting stuff costs way too much money & time =P

"me"'m a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Otaku...
Thank you so much i hate when people use japanese terms incorrectly i don't see the point of saying "I'm an otaku!" when you could just say i like manga or i like anime also it's annoying when people use other japanese terms or behaviors mentioned in anime or manga when you are in the US i'm japanese and have never done that when i speak japanese i speak japanese when i speak english i speak english i have never mixed them togetherIn a sense,... and according to the western definition, yes I am one. We foreign japanimation Fans tend to think that Otaku means only "hardcore Japanimation Fan", but in Japanese Language terms, guess what, it is not. Otaku in real japanese means "A person out of his mind, daydreaming, forgetting about reality" Otaku for common Japanese people is described in a negative sense instead of "Japanimation-fan" only. I read that in many Articles in German Japanimation-magazines.
So I would watch it, if you ever go to Japan or meet Japanese people and telling them that you are an "Otaku", just because you're a Manga-fan... serious...
Yesterday when I went out with my Japanese friend and a girl, and I mentioned One Piece, my Japanese friend chuckled at me and told the women, "Francis always talks about Animation!" Everytime I mention Naruto and Anime, he starts to chuckle and yesterday he told the woman, "Francis is an Otaku!!" And I told them "No, no Otaku, I heard that it's a bad word in Japanese." And he agreed, so we clarified the thing...

I can honestly say no, I have no interest in anime whatsoever. I have lost interest a long time ago

I'm 100 percent proud to be Otaku. I been collecting manga, anime or action figures, since when I was little kid. I have lot posters. I watch anime almost everyday and in my free time too. Personally there is nothing wrong being Otaku. People who have no knowledge on anime think otaku is bad thing. No it is not. Just personal taste.
