Laptop Battery Life

That is half correct. It can deliver it all but not as fast as you would like to. So if you play Doom it can give you, lets say 20% because you're draining power too fast, but if you are taking it slowly enaugh, like when you do
echo "mem" > /sys/power/state :-) , it can still give you 90%.

I have a laptop dell and have the same problem even so the operating system has been started to display a box saying that i may have to buy a new battery because is nearing the end of his life, i guess is better to use the laptop with electricity and without the battery...
Sorry if this is off topic but i think i know how to make your battery last a bit longer so you can get more life out of it. The sad thing is this only works with vista.

Thats because it disables un-necessary eye candy that consumes more battery power than standard operating system, that being said, Vista should consume more battery life than other OS.
(Yay for eye candy)
I have the very same problem. Before, it lasted 3 hours, but now it takes 1:30 to turn off. I always use the electric connection.

My battery is now completely dead and its not even 2 years old yet. Replacements arent cheap either. I guess thats what I get for getting a dell.
@theghost: Yeah same here. But mines is'nt a Dell, it's an Acer. =/ I asked how much a new battery would cost, and they told me that it'd be around 60 or 70 dollars. =(

Well actually a laptop battery has normally approx five years life for 2-3 hours usage for full power. It depends on the hardware to if you expand it. To get those you must remember to not bring the battery run out of power and always used it for 3 times a week. It will last long but remember all electronic device especially battery will be aging with time flows
My laptop is sony vaio and battery life is not that pretty good cos it only last about 2 or 3 hours max so i use plug
When is hydro cell gonna come out for laptops ><... i know hydro for cell is out for testing for mobile phones and they last for like 7 days... and they pretty dam small ><

I think you must change to newer battery , laptop battery usually just survive one to two years,...

Same here. Right now, I'm using the Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop computer, which I bought in the summer of 2004. It was supposed to be a "desktop-replacement" computer, where I opted for better performance and more multimedia features at the expense of battery life. I recalled that it initially lasted about two hours. Then two years later, it decreased to about 30 minutes. Nowadays, the battery lasts for about 5 to 10 minutes, even after I fully charge it overnight.
The battery power meter in the system tray shows up as being 100% charged. It decreases to 99%, then to 98%, etc. as it normally would, but when it reaches 95%, the computer suddenly shuts down without warning. Upon reboot (with the AC power plugged in), the battery begins recharging at 1%, and it requires several hours to recharge it back up to 100%.
I suppose it's a faulty battery, but I don't find it to be too much of a problem. I rarely take the laptop outside, mainly because it is large and heavy to carry it around. The battery is pretty much useless, but I just leave it in there in the event of power outages.
Sudden drop-outs of laptop batteries usually don't happen more than once in a short period. Many batteries use a flow intergrator to find out how much power has been used. And subtract it from total capacity to find out remaining power.
So when you experience a sudden drop-out, say at 20%, the battery would find out that it actually couldn't hold as much power as it thought it could. And at the next power-on, the total capacity register will be adjusted lower to fit the real value, preventing further sudden power-outs.
But also battery meters usually don't rely on this alone to find out real max capacity. This is why different batteries' battery meter behave differently.
This is also why many people think "total discharge" is extremely harmful to battery: They drain it and find out that battery life shortened notably, and ascribe it to the draining. But actually, battery life is lost over the whole lifespan, not just at drain-ups. Draining only exposes it.
ps: i'm now using an 3.5 year old laptop and it's still giving me more than 3hrs at 50% cpu clock

I just bought a laptop last month so its new =]
its a tishiba and when it is fully charged it can last 1 1/2 hours on high performance and on balanced 2 hours, and on power save about 3 hours
if you want to prolong battry life heres a tip:
every week drian the battry till it turns of, then charge it up as normal, my old laptops battry lasted 2 years at about 2 hour when i did that

I have a Macbook so it last for about 6hrs. Usually battery life of laptops last for 2hrs or so. I suggest you change your battery if it only last for 30mins. Here are my tips for taking care of your battery.
1.) Don't overcharge it. Avoid also full charge of battery.
2.) Charge only when your battery life reaches 5%.
3.) When storing the laptop for a long time, drain the battery and take it of the laptop.
