I have a few things I consider before I would pirate something:
Is it available in my country to begin with? If it is not, especially if it's not in English, I have no guilt whatsoever.
How expensive is it? Is it way overpriced? If a piece of software is going to cost me $500-1000 dollars to get chances are I will just find a torrent.
As a general rule I am against piracy, but there are times when I feel it is *okay*.

If you look at the torrent site statistics and how many illegal programs and software is being used nowadays I wonder how the companies still stay in business, let alone make a profit or, better yet, become rich. If so many are using illegal software and this is happening, I'd say the companies making that software should cut down on prices, because, let's face it, everyone want's profit, but 500% may be a little too much? I have no guilt whatsoever of not having not one legal piece of software. NOT ONE.

If you do it for a profit, then it would be pirating because you're taking that initial payment away from the media companies
i use fan subs on my sites and i don't upload or possess the series because i use embedded players that i construct myself for the sites
i don't charge for anime and all my players are available to everybody to use freely on their prospective sites
is that a form of pirating or a legal means to show anime without possession of the media?

It’s theft, and there’s no two ways about it. The only times I wouldn’t consider it wrong are when it’s just unreasonable that something can be obtained legally, such as something that’s out of print, and can’t be found anywhere, or as gloomfox said, not obtainable in our country, then it’s okay.
With that said, I’ve had a very prolific career as a thief…
Actually, I’ve always found it very telling that so many people do it, but most wouldn’t actually steal from, like, a store. I have a friend who’s a very devout Christian, and he (as well as I) brags about whenever we downloads stuff. If we download 50 Cent’s discography off Pirate Bay, we’ll say mockingly, “50 Cent got GOT!” which means he got screwed over. Then we’ll high-five each other. I always find it amusing that it never crosses his mind that piracy is theft, which is a sin in most (if not all) religions, his being no exception.

Living in a poor country have made me more relaxed regarding piracy. Downloaded software or photocopied books used for academical purposes makes better professionals than one day will serve society (and finally will buy the original stuff), ripped music is a good way to listen first and then buy later (if available) the music you like most (in CD, I have serious problems buying an mp3... what if I lost my player or somebody steals it? Having a backup is legal?)
I agree that piracy for profit is theft and must be punished. Piracy should be free, that will teach a lesson to all those companies and their overpriced products.

Well, in my opinion... piracy may not be a bad thing in the first place. Without piracy, due to cost, people will limit what they decide to buy and in some countries where the product may not be available, people will simply not be able to enjoy the product. Putting it another way, piracy could be a form of advertisement, by allowing access to the product by a bigger market. More people will listen to songs and watch animes and this leads to a stronger market that will eventually benefit the music and anime industry. People might decide to buy the original after listening or watching and deciding that they like it. Even if they do not purchase the original, the industry can still benefit indirectly from the increased publicity.
I know that this argument will not serve as a strong justification for piracy.. but it is just a thought...

This is a topic that has always caused controversy, obviously, the person benefiting from the ill-gotten software, music, etc would usually not mind that it is so easily available, and even some musicians starting out can benefit from the wide-spred torrent community, however to producers of large name products, like Photoshop, it can cause a major cut out of the profits. That said however, major producers like Adobe do not mind a little bit of pirating going on, while they never will admit it, often times people who started out using the programs illegally will go out and buy the software / music / W/e if they like it.
While I am not justifying piracy, there are benefits and drawbacks to both sides of this argument, and the way I see it there is no official solution in sight. Just my opinion.

I don’t really think there are many ways to justify piracy other than the ways I mentioned. Things like, “It’s a bad movie, so it doesn’t deserve my cash” aren’t really valid. Even for stuff that’s overprice. I understand why, but it’s better to just be upfront about it. After all, it would seem less likely that you’d deny being a thief if you went into Best Buy, and made out with a copy of Photoshop. Why’s the fact that a person got it from a torrent make any difference?
I'm against it. I believe it is morally wrong and can seriously hurt the producers of the product.
However, I'd be lying if I said I had never pirated anything.

I'm not really against it, though I rarely bought one
Piracy makes negative effect for the producer of the original one
In the other hand, piracy things helps the low economy people:3

I recently bought a DVD from another country that is their "Official Registered" release of an anime series. It has all the information and official seals on it, yet after I had purchased it it was removed from where I bought it as apparently it was pirated. What am I to believe? It is completely illegal here, just not in the country I bought it from? Does that make me guilty of buying pirated? I never intended to after all and it wouldn't stop me buying them again. If I can buy 50 episodes of something overseas that would cost me the same here for only 4 episodes...guilty. I'm not proud, I'm not wealthy either.
I'm neutral on this.
Though I agree that pirating is wrong, I admit that I do buy pirated DVDs. But give it some thought, if a not-very-rich man watched a pirated DVD with his rich friend, and he really, liked it, so much that he even bought it. Now didn't that help the producers?
This is just a theory of mine though, and i am am too young to know much deeper about the issue.

It is wrong to benefit from others hard efforts for free.
I feel that for this reason, many things in the world of humans have gone rotten. The environment. The social/economic system. We take for granted that it's a simple, small thing, that it's just one small download. Collectively, however, it is this same sort of thinking that causes people to litter. And we all see how, collectively, it junks up the planet.
But that is something intrinsically known to the issue. On a broader scale of looking at things we must ask ourselves, is it always wrong to do the wrong thing? It may sound dumb, but that question is not nearly as simple as it seems. If piracy advertises artists or inspires more purchases, is it all that bad? Most of the industry profits from merchandising, but if people haven't seen the series or enjoyed the songs how will they know whether or not they would like to buy related products?
I think it is within that blurry ethical boundary that it becomes something of a judgment call. I suppose piracy is okay so long as it is to the creator's benefit, and not their detriment. I think it is for this reason that some companies are actually moving to stream their anime for free online (such as the One Piece simulcast by Funimation), as they can see new markets for selling their merchandise open up by making the works openly available to enjoy.

Sell? Hell no. As RedZeshin said, benefiting from someone else's grueling work for free is just wrong.
It's also wrong to just post it on the web for free. But heck, since when had anyone else ever actually done something about it?
However, I can't bring myself on a solid wall against it. Most of the manga I've ever read is online. I mean, if I didn't, I'd be reading old stories over and over again, because it's not that common that a new series is added to the bookshelf every month. I enjoy manga/anime, and have a hard time seeing myself without it. That's why even though we know it's wrong, we still cave into feeling and pretend it's not.
