All babies start off female believe it or not.
The amount of testosterone in the fathers contribution usually determines if the child will end up male or female.
If there is enough the baby ends up a male if not it stays female.
The nipples are just a left over effect from that on men. All mammals are that way.

The female chromosone is XX, the Male chromosone is XY. Men are missing half of a chromsome, which that little half is what seperates male from female.
So literally, males just 1/2 chromosome short from being female. Thats why its been said that the male is originally female (though really not the case)
Not entirely correct, though you have the right idea. There is an 'X' chromosome and a 'Y' chromosome. Chromosomes come in pairs and a male is created when the mother gives an X chromosome and the father gives his Y. The Y is not simply half of an X chromosome, though it is substantially smaller and not as important as the X.The female chromosone is XX, the Male chromosone is XY. As for nipples...there doesn't have to be a why. Nearly all mammals have have nipples whether their male or female so get over it :P
