Ok I started this wallpaper and now I'm stuck - I can't figure out what else to put or anything.
I need some guidance & ideas please!
I still need to do some cleaning around the edges and stuff - this is kind of a rough draft.

I would say this is a great start and the next few comments are my artistic taste more than a sound judgement call.
Personally I would make the whole image grey scale except for the blue shirt, the pink shirt, and the gold necklace. I would increase the saturation on those only slightly. As you said some edge cleanup here and there, but you are aware of that. I would definitely make a background, and I would make a light pastel color background, maybe a satin or fluffy cloud texture and make it compliment the picture.

It's nice, kinda sad looking though... like saying goodbye...needs rain hehehe.
hopefully you can maintain the bitter sweet theme of your characters, cherry blossoms and fireflies comes in mind and rain ^^ (i was serious about it) dark colors not total black.
or they are in seen through the window glass, raining outside, raindrops racing on the window planes. (get?)
candles on they're back, stuff like that. Think gloom ^^

I like the art style that you chose for the bg. But it seems that the bg is brighter than the image, so it kinda takes away from it. (in my opinion anyways.)

Now that you pointed that out I agree with you. So I lightened the bg a bit. How is it now?
