Learning Japanese
This question has plagued me for a while and I was wondering if it is really possible to learn Japanese and become fluent in the language just by watching films and programs and reading subtitles. I know people are able to keep up peices here and there but can people really learn the language without someone teaching them correct pronuncations and grammer.
I've always wondered the exact same question. Like, what if you just catch on eventually?? Cuz my bro watches animes a lot and he's can recognize so many of the words that are being said. So in about a year or two will he actually be able to learn how to listen to japanese fully?? hhhmmm
It's hard...but it's not impossible yah?
Maybe if you could decipher the meaning...or watch a hundred episodes *teehee*
just kidding. Maybe?

If you watch enough of it, have an incredibly developed sense of adaptation, then yeah I would assume it's possible. I've picked up words here and there, but there is a lot to the sentence structure that I don't know about. That would be the most difficult part of it all.

Peronally, and because this happens to me, this is what I think:
Similar to studying English, or any language in particular, it's kinda possible to learn words, vocabulary and expressions from English subbed stuff. For example, you can learn what 'Arigatoo', 'Kawaii', 'Omae wa kurosu', and 'Yakusoku da yo' mean. I learned that 'itsumo' meant 'always' after hearing it from many anime. However, you'll still read up on how to piece together the words you've learned.
For example, if you hear a character say, "Ore wa tabete, ofuro ni haite, Nihongo o benkyo shite, nemashita yo", it's possible to find the words familiar, but you'll still need to read and understand how the language pieces together words to form sentences. In this case, he's saying that first he ate, then he took a bath, then studied Japanese, and then slept.
As a conclusion, like any other language, you can easily learn Japanese words from anime, and will seem familiar once you've heard it many times, but if you wanna learn Japanese, go read a book, or take a class.

Well, nothing is impossible, you can learn japanese from watching,
all what depends is that you are into it, meaning that you want to learn it.
it is possible, i have also picked up a few words by watching naruto,
because every other anime that i have watched is in english.
and on the other hand i use dictionary to help me learn,
like the word kiba means fang or etc...
but there is one word that i still cant find is:
how do you say "I" in japanese.
if anyone knows plz let me know, ok
n_n.

You can learn to listen quite easily. If you just pick out certain words or phrases that are repeated, you can comprehend most of your typical anime conversations. I doubt, however, that you can learn the intricacies of the Japanese language by reading subtitles.
What I'm saying is, is that after a while you can likely watch a raw and understand what is going on for the most part. However, learning to actually speak the language is another feat in itself. In fact, most people who set out to learn japanese quit from what I've seen.
It's especially easy with anime. A lot of characters repeat certain phrases and a lot of scenes are commonplace for certain genres (Like, there's always a beach scene in Harem/Romance, and they're always talking about the Ocean, and repeat the word a billion times). So anyone paying attention can pick up those things pretty quickly.
Meh.

I think you can learn some words like the well know "baka" or "so deska" ( "idiot" and "I see" ) but you can't possibly learn ALL japanese just that way ! It's just impossible.
Do you know that even the japanese themself don't know all the japanese language before the end of school ?
It's a vey hard language to learn so you need some books or method to do it and a lot of efforts! But if you really want to, you should be able to do it......

I agree with alucard24..You can learn some small words but not all the japanese words. Gambate ( do your best ;D )
Simple vocabulary is easy to pick up if you've seen enough anime for so long, but watching subtitles alone won't do it. I don't think so anyway. I think it will definetly help wih pronuncetion. And think about the grammatic structure of sentences in english vs. japanese. From what i've noticed they're set up really differently.
Another thing to consider is--even if you take it in and can understand it, does that mean you would be able to speak it just as well? Doubtful.
But anime is way better subtitled so long live subs!

Yeah, but it takes for freaken ever :P
I don't think you need a dictonary for that word. Any good Wolf's Rain page will tell you that.hitome-sakuraand on the other hand i use dictionary to help me learn,
like the word kiba means fang or etc...
Kiba=Fang
Tsume=Claw
Hige=Whisker
Toboe=Howling
I think it is "Watashi"...hitome-sakurabut there is one word that i still cant find is:

To me it is not impossible, right now I use a new method, and I think it will work (I hope so ;)). I always watch the raw, and then watch the same episode with the subtitles.
In my opinion, it is hard to learn to speak, but to some extent, you will learn how to understand the language.

The answer is yes, I learned English through watching lots of tv (did not help my spelling though).
Right now I am trying to learn Japanese and I find that subtitles do become a crutch if you don’t learn to ignore them when ever possible. When I was learning English ( My native language is Spanish), I didn’t have subtitles to help me figure out what was being said on TV. Not having subtitles forced me to remember meanings of words.
Try watching an anime with subs and then with ought them, try to see how much you remember. It also helps to use a good Japanese-English dictionary if you get stuck on a word while you watch a show that is sub-free.
"I" = watashi ( both men and women use it), boku =Men use it, (in anime tomboy girls use it too), atashi (short form of watashi, less formal and used by girls mainly i think)

Over time I think it's possible, but you might miss many aspects of what is being said. Why somthing is polite or rude? If you're a guy and you go to Japan and say "atashi" for "I" people are going to look at you strange, but you might not pick that up by subtitles alone. I also tend to find that translations in subs aren't always the greatest either, so you can end up with the misinterpretation of some phrases.

bye bro!
