anime-DVD vs. VHS debate
4 years 8 months ago
I thought this topic would be worth discussing. My anime DVD collection is getting bigger and bigger, and I have to say I love DVD. I love the crystal clear picture and the awesome sound quality that DVD's offer. Unfortunately, I see two major drawbacks to the DVD format. One is quite apparent once you look at a DVD cover-the price. VHS is cheaper than DVD, but the gap appears to be slowly closing.
The other advantage VHS tapes has over DVD's is in durability. VHS tapes are much more durable than DVD's. It doesn't take much to ruin a DVD. I purchased the entire Blue Seed series in a four-disc box set for my birthday last year. One of the discs has recently developed a small scratch. Because of this scratch, episode 13 is now unwatchable, but the rest of the disc remains unaffected.
It's a major nuisance, and I have to constantly be careful while I'm handling my DVD's.
What do you guys think? Which format do you prefer-VHS or DVD?

Above all, DVD. While it is true that the price range of the DVD can be daunting, the price of a VHS tape is no better off. You can pay just a little more for incredible sound and video quality. Furthermore, you can interact with DVDs and some come with extra tidbits.
I believe that DVDs are much more durable than VHS tapes. The discs are kept in a plastic container, away from dust, light, and moisture. Tapes on the other hand do not have such a container. Also, DVDs take up less space. A scratch can be taken care of with a DVD-disc cleaner. The same can't be said of VHS tapes. The magnetic film of a VHS tape can be easily ruined and manipulated so that the stuff on it can be magnetically ruined or written over. DVDs don't have that type of danger.
Back up copies can be made easily with both media types, but I suppose that DVD copying is much more costly. However, I think if one really needs to back up his stuff, then it's worth spending the money. VHS tapes are easily copied. Still, the integrity of the durability of each media type comes into play.
So yeah... DVDs. I still don't buy anime though. I really need to, but being a broke mofo sucks. I'll get back to you people once I get a job.

I prefer DVD . That quality that it gaves when you watch its worth its cost .
Besides all my friends buy only DVD so if I would buy VHS I couldn't exchange witch them because they couldn't watch it (all of them have DVD) .

What I meant when I said that VHS is more durable than DVD was that it's really, really, easy to for a DVD to get scratches on it. Sure, the magnetic tape of a VHS tape can be easily manipulated, but you have to lift the top of the tape off to do that. DVD's, you don't really have to do anything to screw a DVD up. As fas as scratches are concerned, you're right. I completely forgot about the disc cleaner. But can't the disc cleaner just be used a certain number of times?

Definitely DVD !!
better quality, more bonus !! and they last longer compared to vhs!
VHS is too old, though it's cheaper, you'd better go for the quality !!
and dvds fit better on a shelf compared to vhs!lol

Actually, it is easier to ruin the whole VHS than to ruin the whole DVD. If you live in a humid place, there's the risk of getting molds and fungus growing on the magnetic tape. I have VHS that starts having white fluffy cottonballs growing in it 6 months later. VHS needs to be played on a frequent basis to avoid having fungus. If not, it's bye-bye to the whole VHS and not just one episode as in DVD. Imagine having to watch all your animes again every few months.
Then there's also the VHS player. If the head is damaged, and you played your VHS cassette in it, there's a high probability that the tape will get tangled inside and you'll end up wrinkling the tape as you tug it out. And that cannot be remedied unlike DVD with scratch filler solutions.
So it's DVD all the way for me.

DVD's are bless... in fact, they tend to low their price down even more and more! And all the extras and enhancements are worth the price you're paying.

OH yeah, the VHS... it was so fun trading them with friends in the past. We always did on the schoolyard. Most of it were Hentai or stuff like Record of loddoss war, Tenchi Muyo, NGE.
And now it's DVD (and divx) all the way :hyper:

This is slightly off-topic, but it's amazing how little difference there is between the wholesale cost of a VHS tape and a DVD (not counting money involved in menu creation, buying rights, etc.). Where I work, we buy bulk VHS for about $0.75 and DVD-R for $1.30.
Er...back to the topic at hand, I much prefer DVD though VHS does have one nice use: you can stop the tape, then go back later to right where you were without fiddling with scene selection and fast-forwarding.
I do have some VHS tapes that I bought for $29 "back in the day," but now I buy DVD for around $21 online (free shipping), so to me, that's a bargain. <!--emo&;)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> I do like having the option to use sub or dub, though I normally go with sub (except Cowboy Bebop). I have such a small collection compared to my anime fan friends, though.

DVD of course.
Prices will eventually go low, with the DVD recorders, the ammount of DVD players, and stuff <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I too will say DVDs, for pretty much the same reasons that everyone else has said. We've actually sold off almost all our VHS tapes when we started buying DVDs, and I don't really miss them all that much. I've never had any problems with DVDs (sometimes the player), but I've had several problems with VHS tapes.

I have to say DVD as well.
I've dropped DVD's in their cases and VHS's in their cases before and the VHS was totally ruined. Plus - the older my VCRs get, the more often the tapes get eaten. (I guess my VCR is hungry.)
But seriously, the DVDs are better quality and you can fit more on it. Also, it's a perk that most DVDs have dual languages. Japanese if I feel like really watching anime and English Dubbed if I'm bored.
I've had some problems with scratched DVDs though, but luckily they weren't serious. Depending on the situation, it would work sometimes and not others, but overall I think DVDs are better.

Not only that, but I feel it's a lot easier to purchase a DVD that contains the Japanese version with subtitles than it is to find subbed anime VHS. Subbed VHS is out there, but I found it harder to complete my VHS collection than it is to collect the DVDs of a certain series.

I prefer DVDs over VHS, especially since I didn't own a VCR until a few months ago. DVDs are nicer quality, and if you want you can switch back and forth between Japanese and English if you so desire. Many more choices. And the easter eggs, don't forget about those!
DVDs are also useful if you need to get a screencap of something, just pop it in your computer, no worries about what video card you need to hook up a VCR to your computer.

DVD's! They're shinier and prettier <!--emo&:D--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

bye bro!
