This wallpaper gives us a perfect example of how a simple manga scan can be turned into a beautiful vector. Not only did danalm trace the lineart, but he also added amazing details and a simple, yet wonderful background. Furthermore, the wallpaper shows us how the monochromatic style can make your work look really interesting.

Don't really know where this goes but for the people who make wallpapers here. What is better? Tech-heavy background, filter-use-heavy background or a simplistic/minimalistic approach? Personally, I prefer a lot of the minimalistic approaches and one of the main reasons why I don't put my walls (not many but a few) up here's due to the heavy use of tech and I was wondering if a minimalistic approach in here would be blasted at x_x ¬_¬

Interesting question. For those who have been making wallpapers for quite a long time, I believe most of the responses would be: do not go filter-heavy! The main concern I have when I see wallpapers from novices is their overuse of filters. But on a second thought, the use of filters is an art in itself. You might alter an image with dozens of filters. You can transform an image into something totally different by using filters. However it doesn't mean that the complexity of the image has to be increased whatsoever! 0=D
When I start from a stock image, I would apply dozens and dozens of filters to transform it into something totally different. During the process, however, I specifically try to keep it from gaining complexity or as you can say "Tech-heavy".
As for the final result, I love wallpapers that are simple, colorful, and flowing. Complex and twisted backgrounds are not soothing in my perspective. <!--emo&^_^--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='happy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just my thoughts,
Venio

I've been collecting wallpapers for over 3 years now and I have a couple of things to say...

First up, I really hate tech-heavy wallpapers. The ones that use all these filters and tools that make a wallpaper look incredibly busy and unorganized. Want to know what they look like? Just go to any wallpaper site and you're bound to see at least a few. I'm not naming any names, but there are some people here that do the same. While techy-walls are supposed to be an art in itself, I highly dislike it as it detracts from the original image. Sure, the techs themselves might be highly skilled and must've taken many hours to make, but that doesn't mean that the wallpaper has appeal. To this day, I only saw a handful of INCREDIBLY good tech-heavy walls out there and I own them. Whoever wants to know what I mean, come and contact me yo.

I have no problem with the use of filters. Sometimes it's needed. However, using too many filters in the wrong way will make a wallpaper look obnoxiously ugly, almost as if to say "hey, look at me! I'm stupid looking and it might say something about the waller too!"

Overall, simple wallpapers are the way to go. Bantam makes some damn good wallpapers btw. <3 emoticon Now THAT'S a good waller right there folks.

My 2 cents.

Personally I think that if it's you're wallpaper than whatever YOU want should be the judge of how it looks. Forget what everyone else thinks and do what you think is best for the image, for your computer, etc. I've stopped making wallpapers to please anyone long ago, I do sometimes get opinons and criticism from a few people, if I feel something isn't quite right, but to please them is not really my goal.

As far as personal preferences, if done well I can pretty much enjoy all styles. I can't personally do tech at all, nor do I want to, but I can appreciate those who do it really well. The same goes for all other styles too. In every style you'll find some really good and really bad walls, I'd like to think that I've contributed to both categories (more bad than good, but who cares! <!--emo&--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> Just to be truthful of my earlier walls and some of my current/newer ones)

I love typing nonsensical jargon.

As much as I love seeing what other people can do with tech, I've still never used any in any wall I've pieced together myself. <!--emo&--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo--> I love simplicity most. Probably why I keep what I make to myself. XD I like having room for my icons, and specific colour themes. Organisation and clean images! That's what really matters to me. :ninja:

I always prefer to make and use more simple wallpapers. Though heavy tech can be lovely to admire, I suppose I feel that a background should never be more involving than the image on it. I get criticism for leaving a lot of space on the left hand side for icons, but I that's just what I like to do (maybe I shouldn't assume others have more than 3 icons <!--emo&;)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).

I tend to dislike it when the main image is distorted or filtered - I like clean images because I usually choose them for the character, rarely for the background.

I'll just say that filter-heavy wallpapers never look good, it takes no real talent an in the end they look either like swirly or overly blurry crap. Remember kids, filters are good only in moderation.

My own personal style runs towards making grunge wallpapers, using a lot of stock images, blurring, overlay blending layers, randomized vectors, and the like. I'm not a big fan of lots of tech (and more the point I don't do tech very well, just ask Bantam and nat), but I do like blending tech and grunge together in a little style of my own (like the last Ghost in the Shell:SAC wall I did).

As for other peoples walls, I like all kinds; my personal favorites being realistic outdoor scenery walls.

Hmmm...I like all kinds of wallpapers, actually. As long as the colors/effects don't hurt my eyes, and the images are extracted well.

From the ones you mentioned, I think simple ones are the best. <!--emo&^_^--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='happy.gif' /><!--endemo-->

My favourite waller used to be the webmaster at this site (Digital Revolution: <a href='http://www.digitalrevolution.tk/)' target='_blank'>http://www.digitalrevolution.tk/)</a>, the site is now defunct, but for me, that sort of elegant/minimalistic style was so great. I just love wallpapers with a white background, a hint of grunge (or whatnot), and one central anime character as the focal point.

I don't mind technical wallpapers. As long as it's discreet as fits in with the theme.. especially with anime walls the tech is only part of the background right? Typo is a big turnoff for me as is 2D vectoring, unless again it's discreet and looks blended in. I prefer atmospheric wallpapers which aren't minimalistic nor crowded and aim for that kind of style myself.

Oh, i think a good wall is the wall which has good bg. So, whatever the bg is, if it cool, so the wall cool. :bounce:

I love all styles of background be it grunge, tech, minimalistic, stock, scenic, etc. As long as the background fits the scan I'm okay with it. I also like walls that shows a great deal of effort in producing it, not some instant 3-minute background.

I usually do simplistic approach, since most of my wallpapers go to my own desktop anyway =P so i prefer to do something to my taste rather than others ¬_¬
