I am very very thrifty. ([]-[])9
I am not yet a college student, but I don't get much of an allowance, and I save my money by eating school lunch, which is free for me at my school. I also picked a habit from my mom where I would walk an extra five blocks if there was 25 cents to be saved. I just conserve my money...but I know how you feel, buying things are always temping...

It depends for me.
I have a full time job, but I decided recently to wait another year before moving out of my parent's place to buy a new car (well, loaned) I really needed it because I drive to work every day and the old car was killing my bank account...because of gaz.
I buy something for myself every once in awhile, most of the time, its anime-manga/ related, rather it be an anime figure or a dvd or two (I don't count my mangas because I have some series I follow every month ). My advice to you would probably be, don't buy anything unless you feel you truly want it or need it. I have a little alarm in my head, when I know I want it, I take it. If I pick it up and look at it from every angle, its most likely I wont end up buying it, or I'll buy it and have no use for it.

Saving is not too much of a problem for me. Not to say I don't have periods of time where I can't even go buy a pack of gum. But I usually manage it out pretty well. I buy the necessities and pirate everything else, yeah I know I shouldn't but it still happens. Perhaps if things weren't quite as expensive that kind of thing would stop, oh well.

The most effective way for saving money is not to use it. If you still want to use it, you can follow this:

(I assume most people reading this don't have a job yet, and therefore they can't take loans or bank credit)

1. List all your needs
2. Delete everything you don't really need or you can borrow from friends from that list (including DVDs, games, manga, etc)
3. Delete everything that you can get for free (steal, or make yourself)
4. Get the cheaper version of everything else left on that list. So if you can get a 1 dollar pizza, why buy the 10 dollar?
5. Don't get too consumptive and get more than the list

Also:

1. Don't over budget, means don't put more to buy than what you can pay
2. Set aside a fix amount of money for fixed savings, something like 20% of your allowances
3. Always keep cache of cash away and hidden for emergencies, you'll never know when your parent's will go to vacations and left you alone with instant noodles and microwave pizzas...(been there)
4. What you can get for free, don't buy. You can have your dinner at friend's place or never treat others, try to be treated instead
5. Dining out is always expensive. Don't get caught with your friends and eat outside. Cook your own food instead, it's more fun and whatever the result you still learn something.
6. Download what you can't buy... (never mind this)

I'm not thrifty! I believe in minimalism... So I generally only buy stuff i need or that really appeal to me (that's rare though).. Also I believe cutting down your expenses really helps save a lot.
Another way of saving money is having a limited budget and making sure never to exceed it.. This seems to work for me when I'm on tour!

I save half of my allowance because everyday I get 100 pesos. I also have packed lunch and snacks with me but I have extra money because during dismissal time I get hungry and buy lots of food. It's really weird since I don't really need to save money because when I buy important things my mom pays for it or gives me money to buy them. I think you should leave some of your money at home so that you won't be able to waste it when you are tempted to buy something you don't really need. I'm not good at saving money because once I've saved a lot I end up using it. So I guess leaving some of it at home is the best way for me. XD

I'm pretty good with saving up money, partly also because I don't really buy stuff unless I need it. I'm a Uni student, and I get the money from my parents since I'm not living with them right now since they're in another country for the time being, so one learns to take care of their money that way (unless you wanna starve or something XD) The cool thing with saving money month per month is that you will get a gradual increase in 'disposable budget' for whatever you want later on :d

I'm rather inconsistent when saving money. I'll save up some and budget for a while then spend everything plus some whenever I'm in that mode or just hungry (mostly the latter).

It's easy for me to save change than dollars. Everyday I clear out all the change in my wallet and put it in the ash/change tray in the car. The amount accumulates fast in a short amount of time.

Whenever I want to put a limit of what I spend in terms of dollars I usually fold the highest amount in bills and place them somewhere other than the cash sleeve such as behind the credit/membership cards or in the inslip pockets. Other than that I sometimes keep the cash in unused or spare wallets or in other places in my room. There have been instances where I've forgotten where I placed the cash and months to years later I stumble upon it which then tends to bring about a grin.

I'd be able to cut down on my spending if I wasn't so hungry all the time. I have a high-metabolism and no matter how much I eat at one time, I'll get hungry 1-2hrs later. I spend quite a lot on food yet only manage to maintain my weight overall.

I don't particularly spend a lot, not to say I starve myself or anything but I generally don't go shopping, or walk around, see stuff and buy, but I don't that's consistently saving, it's just that I don't want to spend them. And then once in a while, I buy some stuff.

I think i'm good at saving XD

Well I try to save by not buying lunches at school or at work and bring stuff from home instead. I also try and only buy what I need LOL another thing, is that if you spot something you want, save up double the amount needed, then buy it, you won't leave yourself short. It works for me most the times!

I save my money in my own account in the bank now, as I always lost it in the past, especially in the Spring Festival, one of the most important festivals in my country. In the past, I used to put my money in a box, but I always threw it every where, as a result, it disappeared because the cleaner for my room thought the box as rubbish, terrible.
