Go

My friend plays Go. He is now in Fukui University and he actually made it on Asahi! Insane.

And yes, he is good. I remember he would always go out to play Go just about everyday.

What is this game?
To simplify as much as possible it's a japanese board game where you and your opponent alternate placing 1 stone (pieces) at a time on a board that's 50x50 squares (you place the stones on the intersections) i believe to build territory. Most territory wins. The game is waaaaaaay more complicated than that though. There are ways to remove the other players stones, take over their territory, set up defenses. You could play Go your entire life and never master it (Hand of God reference <!--emo&:lol:--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /><!--endemo-->).
If you've ever read or watched Hikaru no Go that's the game they're playing (although if you're asking i'm assuming you haven't lol). Come to think of it the best way to see what Go is for someone who has no clue to what or how go is played would be the hikaru no go anime or manga heh. If i remember right Hikaru goes from an absolute beginner not knowing how to even place stones to being a 1st or 2nd dan (the level for a professional player). Can't remember where the manga stopped it's been awhile.

My grandfather had played Go for around sixty years. It's one of those games that stay with you until you pass away. I, personally, don't know much about Go and haven't played it much.
Speaking of Go, anyone seen Hikaru no Go? Despite the fact that it's based around a board game (which had once made me ignore the series totally), it's actually quite decent. <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Seen all of it and read the manga till the series went on hiatus (during the Hokuta Cup arc). Hikaru no Go is one of those hit or miss series either you like it or you hate it. Was pretty odd really. You'd never think you could make scenes of 2 people playing a board game have just as much drama as a boxing match from Hajime no Ippo or a tennis match from Prince of Tennis. Not alot of flash to this anime, but there is a ton of substance. I liked it, about the only thing about this series i disliked was Hikaru and Touya's obsession with each other. It pretty yaoi if you ask me...
That looks like othello
Wait it is Othello lol

its just called Go in japan<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->The actual gameplay is quite different. Othello is the trademarked name for the game known as Reversi. The goals are similar in that you have to try to cover more of the board than the opponent. The game play is very unlike Go in many respects though. Rules are different and strategy/style are also extremely different fom that of traditional Go.

The story of Hikaru is somewhat like Josh's. Josh played Go for only 2 years and he's already a sho-dan, I believe. It's mind boggling how fast he improves. But then again, this is all he does.
Go is hard. They say it's easy to learn, but I have difficulty understanding everything. I was never a board games type of person. I only barely understand the concept of eyes in Go. I wonder if that was covered in Hikaru no Go.

Go is also known as wei qi in chinese. I'm not too sure if its origins are Japanese. I think it was first created in ancient China. Go is totally different from Othello and Reversi. The only similarity is the type of pieces, or seeds, used.
Believe me, all kinds of board games can have as much drama as a tennis match or a soccer game. <!--emo&;)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I've never watched Hikaru no Go though. And I'm not sure if I want to. And I don't think I'll have the time anyway. ^^;;;;;;;

It was used as a game to help generals strategise in wars I think. Looking at the link, it does hint more towards that Go originated from China though. I played it a bit but I stank at it <!--emo&-_---><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sleep.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sleep.gif' /><!--endemo-->
