Korean manhwa
I read Evol's old thread about manhwa and was sad that people didn't seem to like/know very much about them. This short article explains it really well, this feature talks about it in a bit more length. I wouldn't say I know a lot of Korean manhwa, but the ones I've read so far have all been really good - in terms of both artwork and story. Korean manhwa style is very distinctive from Japanese manga...I like how it's different.
Maybe you've read them and didn't realise they were Korean!
Licensed titles around include Priest, Model, Demon Diary, Ragnorak (actually loads of people know about Ragnorak), in scanlated titles there are Goong, Unplugged Boy...interested? See this specialist manhwa scanlation group.
Threads of Time by Mi Young Noh is my current favourite, it's a time travelling, martial arts, historical ride on the back of teenage angst and self discovery of the story's main character, with ancient Korea and invading Mongols being the backdrop. It's shounen in style (aimed at the boys) with lots of fight sequence scenes, naked girls, blood, gore and violence (well they are at war...). The artwork is also amazing. Convinced? Lol. =p

Actually it's very easy to know if they are Korean. Just look at the names and it's as easy as that. Japanese names and Korean names are worlds apart in terms of spelling of names on the front cover.
Yep, I couldn't agree more. But some still get confused! O_o;;
Wow, thanks for the scanslation link. this is just the info I've been searching for.
I've recently started reading 'Model' and I can see what you mean about distinct style XD

You're welcome! Spreading the love ne? ^^ And I LOVE the style of Model's author So-Young Lee, Korean with a Gothic twist. Yay. Lol. Uh oh...don't get me started on Gothic art style...>_< I won't shout up...
Thats a shame, I adore the gothic style, a la 'Alichino' ><
I'll definitely be hunting down some more goth/manhwa.

I dunno... I usually skip korean manhwa because the topics covered well, they don't grab me as much/I can find better re-intepretation of the subject matter in Jpn manga (be mindful that I'm basing this offa what I see from TokyoPop's shelf... so I might be missing better stuff) The few Korean manhwa titles that I hold high in regard is Island (I read this years before TP licensed it), Priest & Under the Glass Moon.
The rest seems to be very shoujo-inclined :P Having spend 10 years reading shoujo makes me want to ... give up the whole genre. Like how many girl-dresses-up-as-a-boy-to-chase-after-dream-guy stories do we need anyway?
oh yeah, another tip on how to tell manhwa from manhwa... manhwa is printed left-to-right. Pretty obvious isn't it?

Hear! Hear! It does put me off when I see the same old same old stuff.

Hmm... manwha... let's see... i've only read one... and that's ragnarok. the plot's great, just like any manga. and the detailing is great too... i haven't read others but i'm trying to find more...

Hahaha, that's why I gave up on HanaKimi. It was stretching the plot waaaaay too thin. I ignore gender-bender type stories these days. Except for Ouran Kokou Host Bu because as I put it, 'a gender-bender with balls' XD
I've only read a few manhwa, one being Ragnarok, which I couldn't really get into.
But, I picked up Sweet and Sensitive and Couple and enjoyed both of them alot. Both just regular stories, no magic, no gender-bending XD, just HS/College everyday stuff. Which is nice since most of the manga I read has some curse preventing something, unrealistic plot (but still good!), etc.

It all really depends there's a lot of Korean Manwha out there that hasn't been realeased in the us that are being translated on irc or on different sites on the internet. Island was one of my faves along with Gung and I had to ask my uncle to send them to me or I went to the book library and read them there. There are many different styles within the Manwha region but you can tell that style difference against Manga's especially nose the shape of the head and the eyes is actually one of the main feature differences although subtle.
Hehe I agree! Somehow it's really refreshing, probably because it's so ridiculously funny. Plus Hatori Bisco sensei's bishies are so very sexy. That usually helps....Except for Ouran Kokou Host Bu because as I put it, 'a gender-bender with balls' XD
Back on the topic...maybe the current wave of popularity for all things Korean in the Far East will catch on in the West and help get more Korean manhwa on the map. And Evol: the Tarot Cafe by Park Sang-Sun is another Korean gothic style!
I'm not particularly crazy about manhwa... I don't dislike it, but I've yet to find any great titles (I mean great as in AKIRA, Nausicaa, Lone Wolf and Cub, etc.)... I don't know... my grammar is suffering from lack of sleep.
Can't say many of the Korean manga I've read are any good but there's one on my mind that I really like. There are probably a few more on my HD that I like to read but I don't remember them.
Check out Shin Angyo Onshi (it's being scanlated.)
I have a big problem with reading names that aren't Japanese. I'm Chinese myself (though I'm born and raised in NY) and I hate saying names like Chin Mi Joo or Wei Xu and ****.
