Art isn't cute
I remember my art teacher said about art being cute. She said that art isn't cute. She reminds everyone that. One time when I painted a poster for the coke cola a girl said it was cute and she responded, "art isn't cute." She told me a long time ago her art teacher said the same thing when a lot of students said her art work was cute. This made her think about what he said and it changed her taste in art forever. Now she likes a lot of the weird art like the surrealists. She also told me that she didn't like anime because it was cute and it always had the same style. They all looked the same, only her daughter, an anime fan, could distinguish it. Anyways I thought about what she said too. Her theory has some truth to it. I could see why said that. She wasn't being mean or anything, but break a misconception that most people have about art. Art isn't cute. I can be beautiful, horrible, ugly, and gruesome, but is anything but cute. Anime sometimes serves as an antithesis, since most people perceive that anime is cute, but it can be more that cute also.
A reminder to all the artists who make cute stuff.

What exactly are you trying to say? We all have different opinions, some could agree to her theory and some wouldn't.
Art = creativity = anything you can imagine and portray.
art isn't cute?.. hmm.. thats just one person's viewpoint.

We have different kind of opinions about art, but I've noticed that if you'll go and see a famous art...it ain't cute... But someway art can be cute...
Hmmm.. i think the monalisa looks cute... lol.
Maybe famous art isn't cute
maybe reknowned artists don't draw cute things
maybe your teacher needs to broaden her horizons
just because people may think a picture, or an artistic piece is cute, doesn't always mean it isn't art

Only the good art is cute

Yh like EchoWinD said, what exactly are you trying to say? There's no question in what you wrote, for us to state are own opinions and besides the Artist Alley is a forum to post your artwork not the opinions of teachers.
Your teacher is somewhat right about her theory. Serious art isn't cute and generally when someone does art they want to inspire people who see it and surprise them, so it's very rare they draw something cute and describing it as that is a pretty pointless cos there's always so much more to it. However, art is universal and yes it can also be cute...like the artwork for computer animation for example.
Anyways everyone has their own opinion and there's nothing we can do to change it.

Art is whatever you want it to be.
and this is in the wrong board. moving it to general discussion. Artist ally is only for posting artwork, not discussing the theories of art.

Most teachers here in the philippines are anti-anime. They think of it as non profitable. Some of them are anti-cute too. Oh well what can we expect they are so old fashioned and don't know anything about the real world. I wish I would be given the chance to tell a prof like that about reality in life.
Since when did 'artists' care about making a profit? And theres a Toei Animation studio located in the Philippines, which is a great place to work btw, which makes anime and gets you paid at the same time.
Art can be anything. Just face the fact that your teacher is anti-cute/anime.

So "real" art can't be cute, eh? To me, it sounds like your teacher needs to loosen up some - being serious as a heart attack all the time isn't healthy.
Art has such a broad definition that there is no one true set definition for it, other than "a creation that appeals to the senses". What one person considers art may be trash to someone else. For example, although Picasso is looked to and respected almost universally by artists, I don't find anything interesting about his work at all. Does that really make his work any less "art" than the work of an artist I'm a fan of? I think not.
And besides, if your teacher thinks all anime is cute then she needs to wake up. Tell her to go watch Ghost in the Shell or Akira and then ask her what she thinks.

Art is in the eyes in the person who sees it. Artist may try to portray an idea, or thought, or feeling, but someone else can totally perceive it differently. Not everyone is going to have the same view on art. My girlfriend loves all sorts of art stuff, hell I just visited the Museum of Modern art recently. Personally, I thought a lot of the junk in there was crap...and made me wounder if I could be an artist by putting down some scribbles and stuff. That's what was mostly there. Hell, this one artist that was on "special" display had mostly like metal slabs just tossed all over the place. Not very special to me. Anyway, she was getting all sappy from the art that was there and like felt differently from seeing each one...maybe I'm just not imaginative. But even so many other people there reacted differently too, like some people lingered around certain art pieces for awhile and others just took a glance and kept on walking.
More over your art teacher should not be an art teacher because it's retarded to change the way you are because someone doesn't agree with you. Again not everyone is going to see art the same way as someone else might. It's a lot like believing in Religion really...there's a lot of beliefs out there and if someone were to tell you that your ideas were wrong...would you change them?
Btw...anime is sexy =P.

Art can be anything that you want it to be! When I see a chibi I think it is art and it is most definitely cute.
