A lot of our natural urges are "evil";
but those urges include things like love and sympathy.

We're a mix.
That's what I believe it to be. I'm a Christian, but I believe all people, Christian or Non-Christian have good and evil in them. There's a constant struggle between the good and the bad, like in anime or some old movies where they'll place an angel and a demon upon the main character's shoulder. The evil one always says things that are really tempting and that sound like they'll profit you and put you better off. And well, the angel isn't all too tempting sometimes, but it's there.
Life is all about making decisions between the two, the tensions are constantly there and evil 'sin' became a part of us a long time ago, but God essentially made us good. Sin just... grew. I'm not going to preach, so I'll leave it there.

I honestly think religion has nothing to do with bad or evil human nature.
How does evil grow in everyone? Jealousy over money, love. And human has a lot of phobias, the worst one being the phobia of someone different.
With the population steadily inscreasing on Earth, the evil nature of human will appear more and more as countries will wage wars on each other for control of resources (water, fertile soils...) , once again, I put that sort of behavious under jealousy AND need.

I think that deep down most people are good, but then again I think that above that is a level of arrogance and selfishness that most of us(me included) hide under to protect ourselves from being attacked by others.

Not evil, but humanity as awhole is just greedy or brainwashed to be so by popular media.

I think that humans are basically good, it's just when a level of greed is added to the mix along with how you're brought up. I mean think about it. A baby isn't going to decide the minute he or she is born if he or she is going to grow up to be an axe muderer. It all is determined by how we grow up in my opinion.
Say you grew up with a good home and family versus someone who grew up with virtually nothing and an abusive family. Who is going to be more likely to be involved with a crime? But even then that isn't black and white, the person with the good family can start doing meth or crack and the person in the bad situation can go on to be a CEO. I guess I'm contradicting myself, oh well. Maybe we're all really in a grey area. I know I'm grey, now what about you?

My heart tells me that humans are good by nature .My experience tells me otherwise. The reality tells me that humans are well... humans(grey). |
Well, maybe my view is somewhat over-analytical, but personally I think we should rather ask "Do you think the base nature of ANIMALS is evil/bad?".
The reason for the above is that humans have instincts - breath, eat, sleep, *cough*
*cough* and it's generally geared towards letting us survive. Now, what about the thing that makes us humans, and not animals? Yep, that's right, the variety of so-called "intelligiences".
Now it probably doesn't matter how you define intelligience because we're asking a question about "nature", i.e. instinct. So if you could call the desire to live and pro-create "bad", the answer is yes. However, I believe that humans don't have any "nature" that could be called evil, as it is conscious choices on defined things that can be called evil.
For instance, a person killing another due to the instinct to survive an attack isn't necessarily evil (they might do so also due to a conscious fear of death or the pain involved - an conscious response). Either way, when someone starts consciously realizing their power, and makes a decision to kill for the "fun" of it, that's evil. That's evil that needed thought though. And therefore I don't think that this so-called human-nature is evil. Human-unnature, or something, is evil.

Everyone have freedom to move toward his choices...but you know....every choice has it's concequences....it's up 2 u...guys...to be a good people or evil...

In general, I would say no. However, the classic 'nature vs nurture' argument plays a huge part in forming an opinion about the roots of human nature. I think that personal experiences and perceptions, evolved from observing others is a basis for how individuals start forming their individuality, which sometimes is evil/bad. Humans, just like all other animals, have a basic drive to become better; sometimes, virtues such as greed are ignored in the quest to achieve something, losing morality in the process. A person's 'nature' is their innate qualities; to some degree, a person has their own opinions and falls into a good/evil/in the middle category. Thing is, the 'nurture' argument says that due to outside influences , mostly personal experiences, a person will evolve to become 'good' or 'evil/bad'. For example, living with your family will result in you having some kinds of opinions on matters, such as political ones; you are likely to follow in your parent(s) footsteps. The same concept can be applied to 'good' or 'bad/evil' personalities. You can take after your parents (who, for example's sake, are bad/evil) but you can also choose to be 'good' and become a different person. It all depends on the circumstances.
I think that human nature is like a ball on a seesaw. We vary between what is good and evil, what is wrong and right. There is no strict definition and each concept, only what we have been taught or what we observe on a day to day basis. I don't think we start out as good or bad, but rather neutral and then we vary back and forth on the seesaw dependent on what we need to be in order to survive. To me, the base nature of humans is that of survival. We are born with the instinct of live and try not to die. That is why we breathe, eat, drink, sleep, and go through all the basic functions of life. Everything we do is done with the intention of surviving, and everything we do rests on the decisions that we make. These decisions lead to what is considered good and what is considered bad, but everyone ends up walking on the tightrope that is the balance between the two, wobbling towards either side all the while.

This is a topic I like quite a lot. Humans can be either evil or good depending on your point of view.
One of these points of view is that private property made us evil, since when we start "owning" something we don't want to share it with someone else as it is "ours" and no one else has the right to use it.
Another point of view is that by nature we are evil as when we are small we are extremely greedy and employ violence to get what we want. One example of this is when a friend comes over and he brings a toy, you have your own toys and won't share them with him/her but you want his toy no matter what.
I think that we are neither good not bad by nature but both of these points of view can be considered right and neither of them can be considered the "true" one like many things in life.

Good and Bad depends entirely on what you grade as 'good' and 'bad', you could say Robin Hood who 'steals from the rich and gives to the poor' is good but also bad.
It is my belief that we start off completely 'clean' no good, bad or in between, it is our experiences and the world that we each live in that make us who we are, how we act and what we do.

It depends on what we mean by "good" and "bad".
If my standard of good is "being nice" to people, then a lot of people are good. In fact, most people are great! :D
I'm sure all of us have different definitions on what is good and bad. Is there an objective good or bad that isn't based off our subjective selves? :)
So what defines good or bad?
