A good lie? Do you mean that you can say a lie which others cannot notice this or this lie is good for others?
If the lie is good for others, it would be a lie protecting others. For example, if the truth actually hurts others and you tell a lie to them, they may feel happy at that moment. But later when they find out that this is not the truth, they may blame on you and your relationship will be broken. As a result, I do not encourage people telling lies, although the lies are regarded as good lies.

To Loftydreamer: Hm, interesting perspective/take on the matter. That example you used - Question: Do you know what time it is? Instead of saying, it is 05:47, the selectively honest way of answering would be a simple "yes". - struck me as I never would have analyzed it in such a way. It gave me some new perspectives to analyze heh.

Actually it depend on the situation.
I had one story that i saw with my eyes. One day my friend caught by meand my teacher cause he stole a money from another class. I asked him why he did that and the answer was for cure mother. His mother got sick for 3 years and his father didn't care about her mother and son. The reason why his father did that cause he egoism. All the money for gambling, drink(youknow..beer) and play with another women.
At the moment i was thinking that my friend lied to me....my opinion about him was wrong. I saw his father gambling and drinking.
I'd asked to my teacher to keep this secret about my friend. Although it was wrong, i must save my friend. And the victim(a man), i gave him a money in order to exchange that my my friend stole it from him.
Lie for good purpose still can tolerance...

A "good" lie in my opinion is one that is intended to make a person feel good about theirself or avoid hurting their feelings, but only as long as it doesn't involve something that they need to know about. For example, saying, "Honey, you look great in that outfit" to your girlfriend/spouse/SO even if she doesn't, is a "good" lie, unless she bought the outfit to wear to a public event and she has the potential of embarrassing herself by wearing it, in which case you have an obligation to tell her the truth in a sensitive and sympathetic way.

I personally don't think there is such a thing as a good lie (coming from a Christian perspective, Satan being the father of lies). Though lying to protect someone from harm is hard to go against I still believe lying on any basis is wrong. In most cases, people just lie because their ego or the ego of others are affected, I think people just take themselves way too seriously or in some way think they are more worthy than others (that's why people take offense because they are prideful/emotional in what they value/believe in).
I can't deny that truth, lying is generally bad. I'm a Christian too by the way... And I find that telling the truth will help most of the time. But I do believe that there are times when you have to lie. Kay fine, I'm using an example from a kid's anime. Digimon Adventure 02, there's this episode where this kid either lies and says a guy's dad is in the hospital to get a guy out of an exam, or has nothing to say. If he didn't lie, his friends would have died. Now that's an extreme case and in fiction, but there are times where lying is important. However, that doesn't justify it.
It was a 'good' lie for that situation, but in the eyes of God, it's still sin.

I think honesty is the best way to go...but I can't say I always tell the truth just because of that belief. When I lie I tend to do it to protect a friend.
