Ever try watching Anime around other people?

The reason why I bring this up is because I personally feel weird and self-conscious when I tried to watch anime the other day in public. I was at a car dealership getting my car fixed and decided to bring my laptop to kill time as I wait. So I sat at a table and did my thing. Since it was a good amount of light there would be a glare on the screen.
EVERY TEN SECONDS someone walks by and just glances over, some people would just stare or have "what the hell is that?" expression. Instead of enjoying the anime I just had people looking over my shoulder. Decided to change it to 24 (American action show btw) and guess what...no one paid me any mind. Not sure if I'm paranoid, but man Anime in public sure is strange. I prefer it ALONE.
Even with friends around it feels strange because something random can happen in the anime like a sudden fan server screen comes out and its like "O crap I hope no one else was looking at the screen" then seconds later someone goes "dude you watching hentai or what??" Then again I do know people that enjoy having company while watching anime, its more "Fun" they say.
What do you guys think? ever tried watching it in public? alone or with people?

It can be quite fun to watch anime with others, however, I could understand not wanting to have to deal with dissenting people in public about it. However, I have never really had an issue with it; possibly because I don't draw much attention to myself. It seems people just don't notice me or what I am doing.
However, rather than anime it is usually Manga I am reading it public. Sadly I lack good portable media players for anime these days(my very old laptop finally kicked the bucket not long ago, and as it was it couldn't play many files due to being so slow. It couldn't even run XP for goodness sakes) :(.

I'm a girl, and I too find watching anime in public a little embarrassing. Regardless of what show it is, either another otaku will walk by and comment on how they love the show, or others (the majority) will just have that classic "WTF" expression.
However, I do love to watch anime with my friends. But sharing anime with people that already love it is totally different that showing your love to the entire world.

I prefer to watch anime alone. I feel weird when people around have an expression that has retard written all over it. As far as I know, non of my friends watch anime.
I only watch anime alone or sometimes with my asian friends. I'm living in Germany and somehow I get the feeling that anime is avoided. They often think it's childish or some pervert hentai.

I would have just sat with my back to a wall so nosy people couldn't see what I was doing, lol.

I prefer to watch anime alone personally, but watching it with others (especially with friends who are also into the anime or anime in general) can also be a very fun experience. I get to see their reactions, and they expresses thoughts and comments that are very insightful which I might not have thought of myself. Also, if I don't understand something that is happening in the anime, I can simply ask them, and usually I will get the answer. I just feel that sometimes it feels awkward if you're with friends who react differently to various scenes, or if you're with friends who don't know what you're watching or dislike anime. That's my two cents :D

If "other people" is friends, then I don't mind, especially if they like anime like me. Otherwise I prefer watching it by myself. It would feel weird watching it in public... seems like a guy like me is still watching "cartoons" or something.
Depends, is it with people that are interested in anime, then yes, and I enjoy it too
, is it with people that are not interested and I have a feeling that they will only look with big eyes and ask me "what the heck are you watching?", then I wouldn't feel so comfortable. But that too depends, where I am, at home I don't care, but at a public place with more audience, I wouldn't feel comfortable with people standing behind my back wondering what the heck I am watching.

Alone, yes I would have to agree, it is awkward. I would probably put headphones on and make sure I was properly hidden in a corner. However, if I'm with someone else watching anime in public, to me, it isn't that big of a deal. As long as there is someone else with me, enjoying what we are watching, then the awkwardness seems nonexistent. For example, the other day, a friend of mine and I were watching an episode of Shugo Chara, and a Professor walks by us and asks us what we are watching. We tell him it was anime, and he says, "Uh...anime is prejudiced against anyone older than thirteen years of age." We just laughed, and I really paid no mind. Although, I have to admit, I kind of want to prove him wrong .>_<.
Yep I like to be alone. Because it could be a really funny anime and then you sit there radomly bursting out in laughter. Or it could have a random sad part and you look like you're about to cry for a few minutes. It's just kind of awkward.
I sometimes watch anime or go to a site related to anime in my university the few minutes before my lecture of lab starts. I don' get embarrassed in part because there are so many people in my school that's into anime. I don't think I should be ashamed of my hobby anyways. I don't find very many people out there that would go up to someone who's watching anime and tell them to shut it off, unless it's your prof and you shouldn't be watching it in his class lol. Most people are more accepting when it comes to anime now I think, but that's just on my campus. If I ever took the bus home (and it's a long ride home to take the bus) then I might watch it on my way home and I don't give a rat's ass about what others think.

Sigh ... my sisters and some of my friends ( girls ) are addicted to these series, and also have managed to drag me with them.
I've even come to see shows like Seto no Hanayome (not as bad as I thought).
In short, it's not something that I would speak in front of my friends, so I rather take it as a secret hobby. XD

At first I had nobody who shared my hobby so I watched and read by myself. But after a year of beeing a Anime and Manga fan a friend began to watch Anime too. So we talked about the Anime we both watched. And then we watched them together. Since we have the same taste we´ve seen many Animes together. And I´m really happy about that. Watching together is much more fun! I never watched Anime in publik, how shoud I? Whithout a Laptop it gets difficult. But I once read a Manga while I was sitting in the Airport and I don´t know if it was just my imagination, that I noticed many people glancing at me and the Manga as they got by. That was a strange feeling and I began to wonder why they were looking. A few people looked interested, other surprised and some had a strange look. As if they were checking my age and thinking of over 18 books. I decidet that there was absolutely nothing to look suspicious at me. And there were nothing suspicious about me, too. Thus I sat there reading my Manga and ignoring everyone who glanced at me. So I don´t have a problem with reading Manga in publik, as long as I don´t find a reason of beeing emberassed by it. Which in such a way doesn´t seem so.

Haha yeah i gotten that "man your retarded" expression before if I'm seen watching anime or if someone ask me what I do on my down time. People say its retarded but yet they watch stuff like "Jackass" or those reality shows about marrying a dog or something of the matter. And I want to give them the "you got to b kidding" look. haha. I just think its funny how anime Doesnt seem to be accepted but yet there are other stuff out there that makes you say "wow really?" which still exist and is publicly accepted. I just think anime is like any other stuff out there.
