The Key To Happiness
I recently asked a number of people what they thought was the key to happiness. Some said financial success, others said relationships, even one told me it was eating a pizza and drinking rootbeer with friends after a tough soccer match (I've never done this, but it sounds true). Another friend said he was looking for happiness and didn't know where to find it.
My immediate thoughts were that:
1) Happiness isn't a destination or a far-off goal. Rather, it's a means of travel, an approach to life, something we carry with us (or that can carry us) as we move forward. :D
2) If you're looking for happiness and can't find it, then you've got it all backwards! In reality, happiness is looking for you and will find you soon enough
3) Happiness isn't absolutely dependent on external factors... with some wisdom, deep breaths and the right frame of mind, it can be an internal decision.
4) It can be found for cheap huddled in a blanket, a good book, hot cocoa and cinnamon rolls on a cold day. XP
What is happiness for you, and what do you think is the key to happiness?

I think you answered your question very well already. I think people don't yet have an idea what happiness truly signifies and that's why you got all those different answers. A lot depends on your childhood, how you were raised etc. Some things are very difficult to change in someone's mind and therefore they stay the same, but as you grow up, sooner or later you'll end up affected by the society, friends, artists etc, eventually you will see things from other perspectives.
There is no point to judge anyone about their opinion in this subject since we are all unique and things have different meanings to us, but even so I would say that the key to happiness, true happiness, is to find a way to extract happiness from every day things. That contains relationships, family, friends, work, amusement etc. I don't agree that financial success is the key to happiness because in that case no one would bother becoming interested in other staff, we would solely focus on becoming rich, and while many do pursue this kind of success and maybe reach the top, one day they realize that they actually were so wrong and lost such a great time chasing something of no value, money. That they end up miserable again. I have seen what money does to people, and therefore I am not putting such a great value in them.
As for eating pizza with your friends, I agree, totally great way of spending time with the people that love and care about you, because what truly matters in life is our social connections, not our carriers. You need a carrier in order to survive, to earn money, and I totally agree that each one of us should chase our dreams, that is to have the kind of job you always dreamed of, you only live once. But which memories do we remember as the best? when we look at pictures with friends, families, having fun, celebrating, the social side of life.
Looking for happiness and being unable to find it? hmmm, I don't see happiness as an object to be found when the time is right. Happiness is more of a process, something that makes you happy, every day, for eternity, and I don't think that money can provide such happiness. Relationships do give such happiness, but it has to last a big while until you really feel it, because the feelings are very intense in the beginning.
Life is like a big adventure, both good and bad events take place, so you can't expect to be happy every day.

I get the feeling that in order to be happy, you would most likely be doing something you enjoy. I hate mopping the floor and stuff so I don't think I'd enjoy my life if my career was a janitor. You'd probably be doing something you really like doing.
Then another thing to consider is if you're getting enough money. I don't think you need a massive amount of money to be happy but enough to at least live and give yourself a little money to spend, unless you absolutely can't stand living with such a small amount of money. So, the amount of money you desire. I really doubt anyone would think having absolutely no money, living on the street is happy.
I think most people also need someone or people to attend to. It could be a relationship with someone of the opposite sex, your family or friends. I'd feel pretty lonely if I had no one to talk to.
Having stress can really kill you. It could be anything. Stress from work, family, school. I hate stress, so having none of it, very little of it, or being able to adapt to stress is important.
I don't think happiness is just one think, rather, it depends on the individual, but once certain characteristics of life is met and you feel satisfied with what you have, you could call that happiness. Then again, you ask, is this is happiest I can be.

This is going to sound really hokey, but I think that happiness really is a state of mind.
There are definitely situations where it's much harder to be happy than others, such as if you have a job you hate or someone you care about dies or even if you're just stressed out but over all it's very much a choice. I have a friend for example who is simply always happy- she's not naive or idealistic, but she always manages to find something good in whatever is going on.
Of course there are a few basic things that make being happy a whole lot easier- such as having enough money, people to interact with and the like. Especially since most of us, me included, don't manage to be happy with everything life throws at us. So for the rest of us I agree with the comments above, but there are definitely some people who are a step above the rest of us in knowing how to be content.

I agree with swordgirl, happiness is a state of mind. It would be nice if happiness were actually that romantic concept of a treasure you must find or a fate that looks for you, but instead is something personal and subjective. People can be happy in the misery, or in the solitude, or among pain or fear, it depends how the subject's soul strength. At the other side, a rich guy living in a beach with a top model would never feel happy for some reason. Happiness can be temporal or permanent, may have a trigger or be spontaneous; people can see happiness in actions, others in persons or moments.
So happiness, like sadness or calmness, or joy or other feelings, are mental states. If you want to look for them, start inside your mind.

I think it's simply being happy. And through life experiences, we will know different kinds of happiness. Be it the materialistioc and the spiritual ones. IN my opinion, we first learn happiness from family then later friends. Posotive outlook on things may also help.

Happiness is so simple and so complicated at the same time. The most discreet and trifling detail can make you happy for a while. But a special state of happiness can not be achieved, it is a thin substance that can not tolerate artificial interference.
I think I just have the same answer as everyone...
Key to Happiness... it's something that everyone seek by themselves. It's kinda complicated, because many people didn't know what is their happiness. But in my opinion, we're happy when we can pass our problem or sadness.. there are happiness because sadness to the world, isn't it?

The Key to happiness.. it's not something you should look for nor something that you gain by doing things you like.
Believe it or not it just comes to you, like a small gust of wind. Alot of people above me have been throwing in ideas but what I noticed was they were all different well in there opinions anyway and that pretty much says that, it's there way of happiness but not the key to everyone else.
Some like to spend time with friends others like to spend time by themselves, some like to go out in adventures while some find it more peaceful staying at home. Like I said before it's not something you can find it's not something you should try to do, It just happens and you'll know it when out nowhere you just smile for no apparent reason

Happiness is thinking that you are happy. The key in finding happiness is to look at life's positive side, looking at everything positively.
So in response to just about everyone in this thread so far, what would you suggest to a person who suffers from depression? I don't fall under this category, however my question is still pertinent.
A state of mind? People suffering from depression simply cannot change their state of mind because of a physical problem - the lack of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in their brain that is typically associated with euphoria; happiness and good feelings.
There are drugs, yes, but you can't expect these to help 24/7.
I do truly feel sorry for these people, void of happiness. I know when I'm feeling blue, it's terrible. I can't begin to image how they may feel.

If people knew the key to happiness, then they would also know the key to avoid sadness!Meaning trying not to be sad...
It's not sth you say and can be achieved at the same time. You cannot say "Now I wanna be happy" and it happens.Mostly, the opposite occurs..
Happiness, is a state in someone's life when there is no sadness..Personaly, I am happy with really simple things.Like giving a present (in general giving) to someone beloved..Or the time when I read a good book!It defers from people to people...

For me, life is meaningless without religion

The keys to happiness are this:
-Fulfilling job
-Financial stability
-Friends
-Family
-Health
It goes without saying that this won’t apply to anyone, but I think most would find themselves content with a few of those things. I mean, it’s hard to imagine an unemployed loner with diabetes as being happy.
