Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Alright, I understand that this movie didn't live up to a lot of fans expectations because it used the Final Fantasy name as a gimmick, but otherwise I thought it was a really solid story. The english version was fantastic and I really liked the concept. The whole spirit thing was neat, plus it introduced good if steroetypical characters. Not to mention that the armour and weapons used by the soldiers is ultra-cool.
I just want to hear from others what they thought about this and whether they liked it or not. Please give a reason for liking it or not, don't pop in and say it sucked...

...J/k I was prolly one of the few people who actually loves this film! I mean from the POV of a pure sci-fi film this film totally rocked!

The animation was mediocre, it didn't look as good as hoped, the story was more generic sci-fi than anything. The disappointment was major for fans because of the epic proportions of each FF game, and the disappointment from the rest of the public was there because the movie simply wasn't great. It was just an animated sci-fi movie, doomed to be shoved along with the stuff on sci-fi channel on saturday nights.
Well all I can say is that movie is just way too boring. everytime it try to watch it i fall asleep. I don't even know what the storyline is about.
I think I actually fell asleep at the theater. B-o-r-i-n-g. I found Snoop Dogg's Bones more entertaining.... wow, I can't beleive I just said that.
It was okay but it had more of a matrix feel to it than a final fantasy feel to.
I mean in my opinion it reminded me of one of the episode from the Animatrix
(I believe it was the second renaissance part 1 and 2) obviously this movie
came out before the Animatrix(I saw that before the Spirits within) it was just
weird how it kinda was a little Matrix-ish. Maybe if they called it something else
than Final Fantasy I'm sure the would have been more memorable.
I do agree that the English voice acting was great and the Animation,
was splendid but it really didn't have a connection to the games except
the mention of Gaea which some of the games mention. Its okay to like this
movie(I appreciate that they tried). I did think it had a good villain(voiced by
James Woods) I personally liked the Spirits within, but I believe they should
have based on one of the games like what they did for Final Fantasy Advent
Children. That on the other hand was more like the games.

Well, the movie wasn't really all that bad... true it really didn't have all that much to do with the Final Fantasy theme, but I thought the animation was good, (at least considering the other stuff around at the time). I wasn't inot anime at that time anyway, so I may have enjoyed it more than I might have now... though I doubt my opion would change. It wasn't great... the story was really weird, but I wasn't bad either.
I think the story could of used more work on it, compared to most of the story for the games. As for animation, it's realistic, so realistic that it's boring... They should of exaggerated it more to make it more interesting. The CG itself though, was amazing. Overall it was a decent movie, but it could of been much better IMO.

I went to see this movie with my boyfriend and his computer graphics research group :) Then, after it came out on DVD, he bought the DVD.
In regards the story aspect, I think it was pretty mediocre. It wasn't as awful as Sky Captain (another movie that was nothing but a CG-fest), but the plot was pretty silly and full of holes.
In regards to the acting, it was pretty lame. Ming Na's voice was so flat and expressionless, she sounded like she was doped up the entire time :P Donald Sutherland was pretty good though. Is there a Japanese version with Japanese seiyuu? Maybe that would be better.
As for the graphics, it was pretty nice. There were some really impressive elements, like Aki's hair, and the general guy's leather trenchcoat. Also, the bird that flew over the valley at the very end of the movie looked almost real. Though some of the character animation looked a little wooden (walking, hand gestures, etc).
In summary:
Plot - C+
Acting - D
Pretty pictures - A-

It was alright, nothing that knocked my socks off but I didn't mind it. I have watched it about three times now and find something new in it all the time. So I would rank it and B-/C+

Hmm... don't remember much of Spirits Within anymore. It was a few years ago when I saw it. I remember being amazed by the graphics, but everything else about it sucked. And Square knew it, that's why they did Advent Children.
Anyway, it wasn't Final Fantasy at all. In fact I probably would have enjoyed it more if they'd gotten rid of the 'Final Fantasy' in the title. Besides, Advent Children is heaps better anyway.

I was really looking forward to this movie and even went to see it in a cinema (70Km away) when it was first released. I personally have never play any FF games and so I had no previous expectations about what I thought the movie should be. I really enjoyed it and have the DVD on my shelf and a small collection of wallpapers to prove it. The CG animation (at that time) was astonishing and despite it's connection to a game it was a well rounded movie - just enjoy it entertainment, it is a movie!
I love to hate this movie and i hate to love it for may reasons or another. one of the biggest reasons was that they didnt live up to the real ff experience. the reason why that i say this is because i thought that it was going to be a really solid ff set into the future and it ended upo really not working out they did do a good job on designing the characters but the stroy that they used was horrible if you ask me that is and another thing it was that they didnt use summons -.- sure they had the monsters but they had no summons at all and that made me mad of course cuz every ff fan would love to see their fav summon kick someones ass.
