Should Manga Created Outside Japan Be Called Manga?
There was an article in the newspaper about manga and anime and how popular they are becoming in the Western world. At the bottom there was a section about an Australian manga artist Queenie Chan who's manga 'The Dreaming' is being translated and sold around the world. 'She has little time for arguments about whether manga produced outside Japan can really be called manga'; this quote struck a chord with me. There's lots of manga creation going on outside Japan now, and it almost questions the idea that manga is essentially 'Japanese comics'. Do you agree that it is simply a style, or perhaps manga is strictly a Japanese thing?
I don't think so... It's just like copying I think manga should be only from Japan so it would be called a 'culture'
Yeah i agree with midream. Manga is a japanese form of art and thus it should only be named to graphic novels that are created in Japan. Any other productions made around the world are not deemed as "manga"

Well, you can call them comics, rather than manga. I think manga is Japan-made.
But in my country, many people get the wrong idea. Every books that have column drawing and story (i mean manga), always called comics. Just some people that know about manga and comics different, call Japanese manga, a manga.
I think what you can call comic, is like Spider-Man, Batman, or Marvel comics production (American made).

I think a manga outside Japan would be called a comic.
I don't think it should be called manga, due to the fact that it is a Japanese word. It is supposed to be used for comics in Japan and therefore calling a comic outside of Japan as a manga is essentially trying to pose off something to fans of Japanese culture that isn't really part of the culture. Do the people in Japan call comics from other countries as manga? I'm not sure, but I know that we don't call all cartoons as anime, so there is no need to call comics as manga. I hope that I answered this correctly ^_^.
I think this term "manga" should be entirely forgotten. Japanese Comics are comics too. Nobody is making a difference between French Comics and American Comics (even though there are so different and also have different names for it) so why should we make a difference between Japanese and Western Comics. This "No it's not a manga it's a comic!" is somehow just childish. As if you wouldn't read it if it wouldn't have a cool exotic name like "manga" which makes it oh so different and special. -,- (And actually just means comic in a different language...)
Well, in Japan they call manga to any kind of comic, whenever it's made in Japan or it is from any other country (Spiderman, Spirou, etc...).
Well, i personally think it's changing from 'Manga - japanese comics' to 'Manga - new comic style'. I mean, we could find that a great american artist goes over to japan, had his comic discovered and made into an anime. But then does that become a cartoon or is it an anime?

No, I strongly feel that any comics created outside of japan (by foreigners who never tried manga style before) are called, comics. Manga is strikingly different from comics; ask any manga fans and I'm sure they are all able to tell the difference. How can one associate comics like Marvel's the same as Dragonball, Bleach, Tsubasa Chronicles, Elfen Lied and such? Comics are actually very different from mangas.
Usually there are deeper meanings in reading manga and the struggles of normal or extraordinary people who are finding meaning in life. And one can often find that the main characters are not fakely overenthusiastic about saving the world, making it more believable. In comics, the arts are usually very clean, but lack in action. Also, those I've read tend to stop at "fighting the enemies who wants to dominate the world". Otherwise, it's about struggles on how to live while saving the world.
Maybe I'm wrong in generalising here. But what I do know is that.. they're different. Even if a foreigner draws his comics in Japan, the point is that the drawings and focus are different from original mangas.

I can see you point, but i still think that some mangas and anime's from country's other than japan are still clasified as Manga's and anime's. I have been watching what I thought was something from japan but turned out to be malaysian. does that make it a cartoon? or is it still clasified as an anime because it is from that part of asia and looks the same?

I would say so. Every comic is different. Compare Maus with Marvel, Compare Blacksad with Calvin and Hobbes and compare Naruto with The Crow. Sorry I don't see your point. Have you ever read "underground" manga like the laughing vampire from Maruo or more in that direction (for example those strange full color things lol)?

Nope. There are many comics even in the west that are very different in means of graphic, storytelling and much more. Manga are comics.
(Of course I don't see the point in calling western "manga" manga too...^^')
I know there're something in other Eastern Asia countries just with the same style of Japanese Mangas.So shouldn't we call them 'Manga' either?Anyway,I think 'comic' is a general conception.
Okok, I give, I haven't been in MAnga long enough to notice small differences, I'm sorry, so my argument is based on inexperience and lack of material. I live in the UK and so we have hrdly anything over here, and their all lumped together, so, i have no choice (at this moment) but to say they look the same. I concede in this argument.

Well, i really don't know. but i do know for myself that i'll call japanese comics "manga" while korean comics "manhwa" and american comics "comics". I haven't read a chinese kind yet so i don't know what exactly to call them. but this issue can be debated. i just thought since the word "manga" does belong to the japanese that it'll only be called manga if a japanese person develop it under the "manga" rule (not the best word to describe it). something like that.
