Magna Carta: Tears of Blood
This game just recently came out and I bought the deluxe edition. It comes with a neat poster and little art book! I've only played a couple hours but I'll tell you how it is so far! Argh I took one look at the artbook and I already like the villains.
Pros:
-Beautiful artwork and CG's
-No random encounters. It works sort of like Xenosaga, but you dash around the map until you switch into a mode that lets you see farther and sneak up on enemies.
-Good music
-Promising story
Cons:
-UGH UGH UGH horrible voice acting. I think that they're just trying to keep in sync with the scenes cuz they must've been talking longer in the other version. Otherwise the voices themselves aren't too bad.
-The main character looks like a girl, but if you like bishounen characters thats good for you. My friend kept complaining about his chest and legs lol.
-The battle system is a little slow in terms of watching the attack scene. They have to charge up chi and then attack for every move so far. Even normal ones.
-Outside of the cutscenes, character models are decent. This isn't really a problem considering this is how most ps2 games look. Just that after being wowed by the artwork you will wish it's all consistent.
I can't really tell you much about the battle system other than the basic mechanics so far. You start out with a standard style of attacks and you "percieve" new moves randomly by performing well on the button sequence attack circle. So far you start out with one style for each character and you can get more through scrolls.
The battles resemble an active turn system, where a "leadership" bar builds up. How fast this builds up or at what mark it needs to be to attack depends on your trust with your allies and charisma I believe. You can raise the trust of your party by talking to individual characters or giving them gifts at save points.
Every attack is imbued with a type of chi which works like elements in every other rpg game. They're complimentary, semicomplimentary, semicontradictory, and contradictory to different elements. Since you have to absorb chi from the surroundings, theres different amounts of chi at each place. You can run out if you use it too much, but it slowly replenishes. There are also lanterns in certain areas that allow you to change the chi. I've never used a talisman (i guess any item with a chi orientation) to try it out but, it should give you the edge in battles.
This game is very in-depth. But thats about the core of the battlesystem right there, not to mention shields, combos, the attack range, and how various actions effect the leadershiop meter.

I want this one bad, but I`ll have to expend my money on DQVi for the moment and hopefully in a couple weeks or sooner I get this one.
I just bought a copy, the last copy at my local store that is. It'll take me awhile to get to playing it, but when I do, I'll post my opinion.

I dunno, I read in my PSM mag that the battle system only let one person at a time attack while everyone else just stood there like morons, and that doesn't sit too well with me. My hopes for this being a good game is running out fast, since the review also said that the story was a tad lacking. I'm still at a loss on whether or not I should rent this or WILD ARMS: Alter Code F (Which is turn-based. Darn.) , and I still have time to choose, but it's running out fast.
On a side not, it took me the longest of times to figure out that Clanitz was actually a man o_O. Him and Vaan* ought to get together sometime and shair hair and skin-care tips.
*Yeah, I had to make a crack at Vaan. I'll say no more about him.

^ It appeared to me that PSM tried to bash Magna Carta for everything just because it's not a final fantasy, and due to that reason I don't think anyone should listen to them. I think you should read the PLAY magazine's review instead.
Here are the scans of that review if you want (I did not make them):

I think Magna Carta is a pretty decent game. I didn't find the voice acting to be really bad. I definatly heard 10x worse. I didn't played the game much to see if i like the story or the battle system yet, but so far it's been not bad.

I got those bashing vibes too, to be honest. I'll rent this game before I try Alter Code F. Hopefully PSM's dead wrong about it.
I own the japanese version of this game and i would like to know if they have the option of changing into original voices??
coz i played alot of the japanese game but i am completely missing out on the story which will definatly be good
and if not japanese it would be nice to have original korean voices ^^

I was a bit skeptical on the battle system (would it work well? For how long would it be enjoyable to use?), but it seems as if they've executed it pretty well. I might just give this one a try. That is, if it hits the stores in Europe anytime soon.

Hah i haven't actually played the game but... the cg is hot
i downloaded all of the magna carta cg stuff and will never delete it -_- such great stuff

Ya the battle system works because of the way thay have a mock grandia wate to play methid. pluse the chi wares out after a certin amount of time so to only have one at a time go helps keep track of it all. it's not the best RPG i've ever seen but it was sooo worth the wate.
Haha yeah they do stand around like morons! However, you switch on the go between characters anyways. Besides, I hate dumbass AI controlling my precious characters. I'm always afraid they'll use my most precious items or do something suicidal. Theres also an advantage in letting your character sit there...once the enemy has their leadership meter charged they'll run at you to get in range, which will prevent the meter from growing more. In the mean time yours goes up while just standing there.
Oooh, I'm buying this game as soon as I get my pay cheque!
The character design id by my FAVORITE Korean artist; Hyung Tae Kim. I have all the characters printed out and hung on the walls in my room. XD I like the fact that his women are chunk (natural so to speak), so that if they have huge boobs, they're full figured everywhere else too. But yes, good game. Me wantie.

Does anyone know if this game has an option for subs instead of dubs by chance? Or was it even released in Japan?
I think it was a Korean game, correct me if I'm wrong. Also I didn't see a dub/sub option in the options menu during gameplay. There sure as hell aint an option menu at the main screen.
