Book Smart or Street Smart?
1 Page: [ 1 ]
Hey guys! ^^
So, this question just came to me all of a sudden. I was wondering, what kind of person can excel more in life, the book smart or the street smart. I've found in certain places that some street smart type people can get their way around or through things with their smart talk or whatever you call it. Whereas the book smart ones always do things by the book. They seem pretty... orthodox type.. you know..
But i really don't know or understand, is bookish knowledge all that matters in the end? Or is it worldly knowledge..? Is everything supposed to be done by the book? Is that whats the more sensible thing to do? Or is it something else?
What is your opinion about this..? Why? Why not..?

I think it'd depend on how you'd define both. XD
By MY definitions (and I don't mean that these are the actual definitions; they're more of opinions and viewpoints, actually), "book smart" refers to stock knowledge, knowledge gleaned from academic materials and experiences: school, Internet, the like. They're hard facts. "Street smart", in my dictionary, refers to how you survive "out there". It's not the stuff to set in stone, like hard facts: it's stuff like how you cope with situations, how you get along with people...Basically how you get by in life outside that which is set specifically.
So in the end, for me, street smarts would win out. It's all about dealing with things as they come, going with the flow and knowing how to ride the waves best. Book smarts are all about predicting the wave and controlling it. XD
...Hm. I think we'd be able to give better answers if we had clear definitions. :)

You been watching 'The Apprentince' ? lolz...
It's all a matter of what situation you are put in.
Their names are exactly what they mean. A person with street smarts would be one that understands the realistic social aspect of life and would know how to deal with people (or so it may be thought of).
A person with book smarts would be a person who is academically more knowledgeable. However most of their knowledge would be based upon theory and facts and their would be less practical knowledge.
If you were to look from the outside, it would seem that the street smarts would have the advantage, as they would know the user needs. However, they will probably be the ones who'd have to hire some book smarts as they will probably be the ones who will help develop (invent) whatever it is their achieving.
Book Smarts focuses more on the heavy jobs anyway, perhaps science and IT? Where as the street smarts would have a job that would be more free roamed...
Anyway, i don't know >.< It's all about how they use their abilities. I'm not book smarts nor street smarts, what do i know?

YOu need to be a little bit of both.
Book Smarts and Street Smarts are both important actually. Well, this is based on my own opinion. I'm street smart the most. I'm fully aware of what's around it and I don't tend to ask so many questions that only innocent people can mutter. I do well in school, even though I'm not that book smart. Basically, I have a good memory so I don't usually study that hard. My friends wonder why I still get good grades, despite being a lazy girl who sleeps in class all the time.
Some prefer Book Smarts because of academics, knowledge, and wide-range of learning. But a lot of people have street smart as it is more applicable to society. Usually, a person with low social awareness (or no street smarts at all) lack common sense and they tend to be naive.

Being a business student myself I would have to say street smarts. Cause books mostly always deal with ideal situations. If not ideal there are always limitations involved. Y' can see plenty of folks making it big just cause they have good street sense.
Books can only take you so far in life. Often times (and this has happened with me) I'll be doing something or some action without knowing its 'official' or proper name. Then when i'll find out its name i'll just go "oh. I knew that already, i just didnt know it". Understand what i mean?
But then again, it totally depends on what field you're talking bout. In some areas the book smarts would excel more than street smarts and vice versa.

I would have to say a little bit of both, because book and street smart are going to be used in different situations; however, if I would have to choose a dominant one I would have to say street smarts. Books can only teach a person so much, its better if you learn first and from other people in my opinion. Not to mention can't use book advice in real world situations.
The more famous/rich people in the US tend to be less book smart and more people smart. President Bush was a C student, I believe. And I think I read somewhere that Richard Branson didn't have great marks in school or something, but he's mega rich now.
Book smart doesn't usually get you very far unless you really keep at it. You have to understand people and how the world works. (well, if you want to get rich or famous).

To be perfectly honest, you can have all the book smart the world has to offer, but if you are not street smart, you won't get a lot of ground.
Experience means everything, trust me.

In my opinion, it's street smart. Why? Because people that don't read books are too much so you have to follow the way of life. I love book myself and I only can discuss about depth and insights with people that read books and understand many things. But those people are rare so you need things outside a book. Books are not always good and do not trust in books entirely. Sometimes, being practical is better. A street smart may be smarter than a book smart.
Yeah being street smart is the way to go although you do need a bit of knowledge. You get higher in life really by connections. Its about who you know. Well thats what I think. I mean I got a part time job at a pharmacy knowing the manager herself while other people have better resumes then me and they still don't get in. But of course its always an added bonus if you have the knowledge too.
However, there are some cercumstances in which you need both such as doing medicine or something. They usually interview you and you really gotta know how to say things and have extremely good marks.

I think street smarts are vastly important. They get you places, make connections, friendships and the like. Though, I think far too many people are not book smart enough now. I kind of blame the schools for the lack of book smarts in America. They make an "A" grade far too easy to obtain. Hell I think half the people at my school that have a 3.5 to a 4.0 GPA are completely undeserving of that grade. I'm a 4.37 student myself, by no means a nerd, but not the most street smart of the bunch either. Sad part is I still rank 17th in my class of ~200 students. I really think that because of college entrance guidelines and the high schools in America, book smarts are being really under-encouraged.
I don't think "connections" count as "street smart."
Hm,, i think,, both of knowledge (the book smart) and experience (the street smart),, must be balance,,
even if you know a lot of theories,, but you have no experience in facing the real problems out there,,
It can't guarantee you can survive,,
both of knowledge and experience must be supporting each other,,

I think it all depends in what sort of direction you are going in life and which skills best complement the tasks or goals you are trying to achieve.
