how do you know that you exist?

How can you be sure that you exist. And that all this is is´nt an illusion. it is for an impossible question for me. me and a person from school thought this over but came with nothing.

That's always something i questioned about myself... if i'm actually here, if i'm actually alive... and why is it me that's looking out at the world... why am i me but not someone else... there are times in my life where i thought... what would happen if i wasnt who i am.. or if i didnt exist... iunno.. it's a question that's hard to answer for me... there was a person that once said ( i cant remember who it was) "what if we were all dreaming... everything and everyone were just dreams"... i don't think there's a possible answer for any of these question.. just that if we were truly dreaming, everyone is dreaming about eachother, knowing eachother, caring eachother, and hating eachother. this dream therefore is made into reality where everybody connects to eachother. whether or not we exist is a question in which was made to not be answered, for both you and i may just be a fragment of a world wide dream.

Here is an excerpt of my essay that had to do with your question. The essay's focus more on direct and indirect proof, but one of the proofs had to do with existence.
"In the cogito, Descartes initially assumes that all things he sees are false. Due to that assumption, Descartes questions whether anything can be true if one’s own senses and memory are unreliable. Then Descartes reasons that God may be putting the senses and memory in his mind. He reasons that he should be able to produce senses and memories himself, but previously stated, he denied himself of that ability. Since he denied himself of senses, body, the heavens, the earth, and the mind, he reasons that he may not exist. Despite that, he reasons that because he thinks he is something, he is something. On the other hand, if he is being deceived, he exists because something needs to exist to be deceived. Therefore, Descartes’ existence is proven in his cogito."

Probably a better way of asking the question demon is trying to get you to answer is how do you know your life isn't like the matrix, fabricated and practically a dream.

It's not whether I'm real. " Cogito, ergo sum" and all. The question is whether all of you are real. How do I know you're not all just figments of my imagination?
