Walls used as avatars/layouts, etc.
How do you feel about your created walls being used in avatars, banners, layouts, etc.? Do you do them for yourself personally? Do you allow others to use them if they ask permission? How do you feel in general about your work being used in such ways?
I have mixed feelings myself. I have no problem with using my own walls however I see fit - but when other people want to alter my work... I have mixed feelings. While I appreciate the compliment, I just don't like the idea of someone messing with my hard work.

I'm actually trying to get someone to use my work:
Blood+ Wallpaper Thread
Personally, if I make something publicly accessible through a site such as this, I should expect others to alter it. Part of the fun of a site such as this is the sharing aspect. Also, who knows? Someone might expand on my work beyond an area I considered.

I'm not all that fussed really. At times I probably would if I saw someone crop my work, for example, and call it their own, but otherwise I odn't mind that much. It depends on the situation I suppose. A little credit would be nice, but I'm not altogether worried about that either.
See the FAQ - If someone took your wall & altered it to make their own - they'd be in trouble. Wallpapers are posted here to share to be used as walls. If someone downloads a wall - they cannot post it elsewhere without permission. Even if a vector is uploaded to the scan gallery, if you use it, you have to credit the source. So I definitely wouldn't expect my walls to be altered.
If you feel that way regarding your work, then that is your position. Which is what I was looking for.
I'm curious how protective others feel about their works. Personally, I don't mind if someone asks to make an avatar/icon from my wall. So long as they ask & give me credit. I probably wouldn't mind banners either - again so long as I got credit. But I don't really want my walls showing up in layouts, etc. It may be silly but that's how I personally feel.

That's perfectly understandable. If permission isn't asked, or credit isn't given, the credit could be going to the wrong people for the wrong reasons, when it was you that did the hard work. I think some people are simply more lax about it, but I understand where you're coming from.
So, i'm not a big talented artist like many here on AP, but when you put your work up you'd have to expect some one to do something stupid like that.
I would be a bit annoyed if some one did that to my work, the least the person could do is get in contact with the original artist, asking for permission.
Because it's your work they are using, not theirs. Any way some artist probably won't mind, I think it's just a polite thing to do.

I know the FAQ as I fixed a scan once and re-upped it with credit to the original poster. I was an artist for around 20 years so I understand your position regarding re-use without credit, but again, I think site context is relevant, though it certainly would be unethical to blatantly claim someone else's work as your own.
To put things in perspective regarding "re-use of another's work," let me make a comparison to my workout designs, which I give away. Making a wallpaper is quite a bit of work, but designing and testing a workout program literally takes years. I freely give away programs to local gyms and have several recognized by various fitness groups. I've done most of the leg work, tested them over years on various people, yet still give them away and ENCOURAGE others to alter them as they see fit. I've never asked for any recompense (though I certainly could make money) or acknowledgment from my workout programs. My satisfaction comes knowing that someone out there is benefiting health-wise from my work.

I personally wouldn't use another person's wall as the base for an avatar/banner. It just isn't right somehow due to all the work they put into it. I would personally prefer to use a scan (extremely low effort/work), a screenshot, my own wall or something specially vectored.

When you make a wall, aren't you messing with someone else's work? Don't you take a scan, that someone worked hard to make, altar it in some way, and post it on something other than what the scan had? It seems hypocritical to me, that you won't allow someone to do what you did to someone else.
Reminds me of the Tshirt that has my wallpaper on it being sold in a wetmarket for 9.99 per piece.
It did fuse me a bit to know they removed my signature down under and the back instead of stating a small credit, it said :"Made by KYUUMUZ" WHO the F*CK was that?
I dunno lol, but all I can say is that I bought the TShirt and wore it, then one week later, it got torn cause the fabric was brittle.

I'd feel proud... :P
I post any of my work to the internet fully aware that it can be misused by any shameless people out there. Rules in the net can be broken easily without any life-ruining consequences, so you can expect people to disrespect or discredit your work even if the rules say not to do so.
If you're not ready to be violated and you can't do anything to prevent it, simply don't post anything. -_-
I on the other hand, am too lazy to be worrying over such things. If anyone messes with my works i should be proud because there's somebody who appreciates my work so much to the point that they want the credit to go to themselves XD
If there's anything to feel troubled about, that is if the other guy can actually make your work look better than the original...

Frankly, I don't care. Given, I'm not very talented in the respect of drawing, vectoring etc. and I don't have any unique work here and very little anywhere else, and what I have, no one would want to steal.
The point I was going to make was already made by Darkvein. What we, (i.e. everyone else but me,) do here violates the very thing we are talking about. I assume that all sigs/avatars are stolen since it's rare that anyone makes their own from scratch. Though I do try to have some decency and not rip off something on the same site it was posted.
On the other hand, if another claims my work as theirs, that would tick me off. Not giving credit is one thing, (btw - my sig and avatar are both drawn by Po-ju) but claiming it as your own is another.

Don't we use scans made by other artists to make walls and call it our own? If we are going to use other people's art, then we should ask permission and give credit to the person. (I designed my own avatar)

Only if people claim it as their own. and it's not like we can do anything about others editing someone else's work. i do that myself usually with wallpapers that have unneccesary text. i don't see what's so good in huge-ass text in wallpapers.
Well, as an avi, Im not to up and arms about it. But if someone ripped it for a layout and didnt credit me, Id have a fit. Permission doesnt need to be asked of me, but I better get some credit and a link to my site
