Do you believe in the tomb of Jesus?
I saw the news a few days ago and I must say that I'm quite shocked, but I'm also very surprised and curious. Well I guess that I'll wait till they broadcast the show on TV though I still think it's a bad joke >__>
Are you talking about how they think they've found the tomb of Jesus along with records of his son and wife? (or something like that)
My friend was talking about that and I think it's complete garbage. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Jesus was married and had a son, and they really can't confirm anything, even if they have the names of Jesus and Mary engraved on the tomb or whatever since both of those names were pretty popular names to give your children back then.

I don't know about that I think that it might actually be possible. I've always thought that Jesus was a regular human being like everyone of us. He loved someone a whole bunch, they got married and they had children. Sounds like something that can actually happen. I see Jesus as one of the greatest men that ever lived along side with Gandhi and Martin Luther King and a whole bunch of other people that made this world a great place to live in.
To me the Bible is just a book with a lot of interesting stories and theories. Most of them started out like any ordinary story and as the story was being told more often it changed a little bit to make something ordinary seem something extraordinary. I think that there are also some stories that were never put into the bible because it made Jesus look more human than a god. I heard that somewhere but I'm not too sure where though. Hopefully someone can clear that up sooner or later.
David and Goliath might be a good example, I really do believe that David fought a Goliath but I think that the Goliath wasn't as tall as some people are lead to believe. I don't believe that David killed someone with just a sling shot. I think that he used the sling shot along with other weapons and that he was a very clever man that he found a way to take down the "Goliath" he was facing.
I hope that no one thinks that I'm trying to put down anyone or anything because I'm not. I'm just expressing my thoughts on a touchy subject.

And if the bible was wrong - after all it was written by man..and over the years, most likey changed by man.

Though I'm excited about this find - This is correct. I think they would need to a wee bit more supporting evidence to proof it - a written record would be nice. But I can't really judge, i'm going to wait to see the documentry.

"I don't believe that David killed someone with just a sling shot."
For the record, the sling is one of the deadliest hand-missile weapons ever invented, and it can be easily concealed and easily learned. In the hands of an experienced slinger (we can safely assume David was such), killing someone with a single stone would be child's-play. What was used is NOT the childish Y-shaped sling-shot seen in modern times, but leather or rope connected to a leather pouch that is whirled overhead.

As for the tomb of Jesus being found and he allegedly being married and what not, I chuckle.

And David would have experience using such a weapon. He was a shepherd, he had to protect the flock from predators and theives. :P
Anyways, I am a Christian myself, so believing in the tomb of Christ would be contrary to my beliefs. The documentary would be interesting to watch though, for curiosity's sake.
People should remember that the documentary, research and article concerning the Tomb is all based on "POSSIBILITY". "If" and "probability" are littered all around the article, even the statistic of 400:1 that the tomb may belong to Jesus is purely based on the probability.
It's already been stated that Jesus, Mary, Joseph, etc... where quite common names in that era. Was the Holy Family the first and only to use those names? No. It's more likely that the tombs itself belonged to another family or it was just coincidence that the ossuaries placed there happened to have the same names.
Not too mention the credibility of the supporters is put into question since they aren't professional archaeologists, historical researchers, etc...only film-makers looking to find anything that they think society will throw money at to see. Plus his hypothesis is contradicted by the Bible, scriptures, ancient texts.
Cameron, I admit you make good movies, but honestly be very careful where you step when your trying to look for another "Titanic".
Also, they rely heavily on the fictional story of the Da Vinci Code that Jesus married and had children.
People get swept up into popular controversial media about religion that they forget that it's either a fictional story or a big IF backed by little evidence that keeps the hypothesis hanging by a thread.
Of course, since it's a popular-made documentary, they'll present their evidence and have statiticians throw out all the numbers to make their audience believe it's true even though they themselves believe it's just probable. The entire thing is based on a simple phrase that starts with "Well, I think that..." backed by "These things here look like they could be..."

“I'm not an archaeologist. I'm a filmmaker,” said Cameron, who won the Academy Award for Best Director in 1998 for Titanic. “I looked at the evidence initially, and as a layman I found it to be compelling ... I haven't seen anything that contradicts the initial hypothesis.”

Well, if they found the tomb of Jesus may be true or may be wrong.I really don`t believe it but I don`t discard it either. If Jesus got married and have childrens, that is not so bad as many people thing.
I made research and listen a lot of programs about this topic and my opinion is very imparcial. I think that if Jesus got married, this act will make Him more human and do not affect His message in any form.
The only thing important is the message that Jesus bring to us, nor if he got married, or have a child or do this or not do that, this is really irrelevant

Well for me.. i don't even beleive that he ever existed... i think that the bible and all that are just stories that they made to try to explain life but then some person dicided that he realy did exist al well as every thing ealse...
maybe i'm wrong.. but i don't realy care i'm not realy the kind of person that gets in to religon.. i always though it was crape to try to controle the life and the way of thinking of other people...
sorry for others that dose belive in those kind of things... i don't mind if you do believe.. it's a persons roght to beleive what they want

Eruruu88, Jesus (Yeshuah) as a person and religious figurehead DID exist. Several Roman writers, including Josephus, write about Him (not necessarily in a good light) as well as historical documentation from Roman & Jewish government records. IMO, Mohammad patented much his doctrine off of Jesus.
What is in question for agnostics, atheists and traditional Jews is whether or not Jesus was the Son of God (or Mohammad was a Prophet).

Jesus did exist. It's even written in history books.
Of course, what's actually questionable is his idenity as the Son of God. That's where faith and belief comes in.

There will always be controversy when people percieve a documentary or theory appears to be attacking religion. A good example is Da Vinci Code. Personally, I don't know a lot about the bible other than the stories that I read for my English class. Do I believe in those stories? Nope. I believe in research and science.
I agree with Eruruu88. I respect individuals right to worship whatever religion they believe in. However, I never appreciate it when people try to force their beliefs onto me. Regardless of whether this story is true or not, its causing a lot of commotion because of the potential damage that it can do if it is true. I mean, lets face it... nothing is perfect (religion included).

It's definitely real. Son of God or not, Jesus was a real man, and real people have urges to procreate, it's only natural. Why would God create a son only to have him be asexual? What's the point in that? He would never get to experience the full spectrum of human experience if he was asexual. This changes nothing about his message.
Just wondering, how do they intend to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have in fact found Christ's tomb?
There is no accurate detailed description on his appearance in history let alone a DNA sample. . .
Records and documents of a Jesus and said wife and children found in the tomb do not prove beyond a doubt that those remains are in fact of those of Christ. Some solid evidence or logical, cohesive argument would be nice instead of speculation and assumption creating this undeserved amount of controversy.

I am staying away from this thread.. cause I could rant for hours..
I just wanted to point out that religious threads are not allowed on AP as they are controversial & highly debateable. :P
