Characters
There are far fewer characters making their appearance this time in Banner of the Stars (BotS) i. The main reason would probably be due to BotS i not having much battle action taking place (BotS) or an adventure on some enemy-occupied territory [Crest of the Stars (CotS) & BotS II] as compared to the earlier instalments. However, some characters from CotS and BotS will make a brief cameo appearance here in BotS i (some will have a longer presence but are playing a secondary role this time). And we are also informed of the lives that they are currently leading.

As far as personality is concerned, Jinto still remains as dense (and maybe a little subtly sarcastic) as ever but Lafiel seems to be showing a bit more emotion than what I am used to. I guess that after the Lobnas II incident back in BotS II, she is a bit more protective over Jinto and more open in her display of emotion in front of him. She is still the calm and level headed princess when dealing with others though. As for the other characters, I can�??t comment on anything since the whole BotS i is all about Jinto and Lafiel.

Story
Being an OVA, BotS i is only 2 episodes long. As usual, BotS i is an adaptation from the Seikai no Senki i novel by Hiroyuki Morioka and as mentioned earlier, BotS i has little battle action and totally no planet adventure. This time, the whole BotS i is focused on Jinto and Lafiel as they make the trip back to his homeland (this was already clearly indicated at the end of BotS II) after his being stranded on Lobnas II.

Viewing of CotS, Bots and BotS II is necessary in order to make sense of what is happening.

Animation
The animation still retains that �??old�?� look from CotS but that gives BotS i a distinctive nostalgic charm. No snazzy bright colours and no CGs that is being generously sprinkled all over the newer animes nowadays. Character designs either changed a little or didn�??t change at all. Basically, nothing much has changed since CotS.

Music
Just like CotS as well as the BotS (I and II), BotS i re-uses the same orchestra music as its opening theme and I wouldn�??t have wanted it otherwise. It�??s just like the trademark Star Wars opening theme where everyone can easily associate with in any Star Wars movie. Ending theme, �??Tenohira no Yume�?� which is sung by Emiko Shiratori is really fitting for the ending. Her sad yet firm voice lends the ending theme a bittersweet touch to the song. One thing that I liked about the Crest/Banner of the Stars series are the ending themes.

Verdict
As always, Jinto still feels insecure about his lifespan as compared to Lafiel�??s. Inferiority complex maybe? But anyway, despite being only 2 episodes, I guess suffice to say, I�??m fairly satisfied. I wish it had more episodes though so as to give more airtime to the other characters as well as to develop more of the �??Jinto returns home�?� angle.

As such, there are some who are of the opinion that BotS i feels a bit too rushed/compressed and �??jumped�?� around a lot. And when you cram one whole novel into only two episodes, sub-plots (if it exists in the novel) might be lost. But then, for CotS, it was 4.33 episodes per novel. I haven�??t read the translated CotS novels yet so I can�??t comment on the second part of my sentence regarding the CotS anime.

On a separate matter, I�??m hoping for Banner of the Stars IV since there is a forth Seikai no Senki novel out in the market (it�??s in Japanese though)

The latest part is pretty action-free compared the the previous Series, but the interaction between Lafiel and Jinto was great.

2 Eps is just too short to contain a fully fledged Space battle ;)

The OAV are well made, but I agree with Anarchy-san here. Two episodes don't allow a story arc as complex and as intriguing as Banner of the Stars has been known to offer. And this is a real shame. There are no other products out there with the same grade of sheer genius that this series has. Except, of course, for The Legend of Galactic Heroes. And this is saying something. Therefore. it's seems to me that this release has more in common with the "Birth" prequel than with the series. Maybe the producers wanted to see if the product was still able to capture a great audience and the attention of the anime community after so many months of silence. In any case it's really well done. Not oustanding, as the other series, but well done. Let's hope the selling results are good. That's the surest way to see Jinto and Lafiel in some new adventures.

Well, it seems that BotS i is more of a ending episode to BotS II.

Expect DVD versions of SnS i soon. I have just watched ep 1 off of dvd and has approximatly 10 mins of footage that wasn't included in the PPV TV rip that ANBU subtitled. Ep 2 comes out on dvd in September.

I missed so much of this series. I missed the entire second season. Now i don't know if i should watch the third one. Because I saw the first season on "Anime Unleashed".

Only the first three chapters of CotS were translated. So that's all I have. I'll upload them later tonight.
