I'm not sure the colors are right

I used a cropped portion of The Great Wave off Kanagawa and played around with the colors, then added some spiral gradients. The gradients made me end up changing around the saturation and that. The whole idea was a deep-sea kind of feel, but I'm not sure the colors turned out right (I probably should've applied a gradient to Famfrit as well...). Anyway, I'm open to helpful hints.

It was 1600x1200 but Flickr resized it. I'm sure you get the idea.

This is true. The background should match the character better and vice versa. I'm guessing you're not familiar with FFXII's espers?
Wth is that thing o_o. Btw it doesn't work
Like I said, it's Famfrit, one of FFXII's espers. Would you care to be more specific than "it doesn't work"?
Two different styles which doesn't get well together. The esper is almost like a 3D CGI scan and the background is a nothing much 2D style. Except the color matches nothing.
For that scan I would use something like this style

I would suggest matching the characher with the background you have a better chance at blending with the BG then and it won't stick out
I am farmiller with the FInal Fantasy XII Espers keep up the good work and hope you get it figured out ^_^

Im not really sure if hes not even blended in!..!! you need to use stock fliters and brushes... stock photos help out alot but dont use dull pentooling... thats for vectoring and shapes..!
